Pretty good hire for them

A better person and coach than the program deserves. Lots of tough sledding ahead for him to succeed in the new B1G and the MSU Regents probably won't give him time to improve the culture before improving the win-loss record. QBs love playing for the guy. A better hire for MSU than I had hoped.

Who the fuck cares right now???

Eh it was during a commercial break

I could not believe anyone was looking at State's coaching search with 2 minutes to go in THE GAME. Now that it's over this is an unfortunately good hire for MSU

You know damn well they announced it then on purpose to try to overshadow big bro any way they could

Hail to the victors

Ryan Day might cry

Probably about the best they could have realistically expected to get.

I was thinking about posting this when I saw it but I didn't want to have any possibility of upsetting the balance of the universe - superstition is weird.

Same, but I was super antsy during the commercial and couldn't sit still. Had to do something lol

I can definitely understand - we all have different ways of coping. I didn't visually watch the last FG attempt (closed my eyes and listened to the audio), and wouldn't send a message to friends until the clock already zero.

Good hire. Likely a quality individual, will be a shame to see the culture slowly poison him.
November 25th, 2023 at 4:17 PM ^
Agreed. Superb coach; they will open things up offensively.

I don't know if Coach Harbaugh knows him or not (he likely knows everyone)
But i think he should invite Coach Smith & his wife out to dinner to welcome them to the state (Harbaugh probably would anyway)
But then become BEST friends with him. . .
Can you imagine an MSU devoid of irrational hate?

We all know what happened the last time they hired a coach named John Smith..

It was surreal and spectacular!

I texted a bunch of friends saying "Are we really hiring another John Smith to be our coach?!"
But then a Facebook friend (a huge UM fan, incidentally) posted a glowing review of him. Said he was the best possible hire, guaranteed if he was wrong I could bring up his post and make him eat his words. He's got a pretty good handle on college sports so I trust him.
I guess we'll see. It can't possibly be worse than John L., Bobby, and Mel.

Wait, I had it on the good
authority that they were going to hire Urban Meyer. This can’t be right. RCMB never lies! I am devastated.

Good luck. Don't care. Hilarious timing for them to announce. Maybe they thought they could throw us a little shade. NOPE

He's a good coach I think, but Oregon State is his alma mater, and he's a lifetime West Coast guy. The last Big Ten hire like that I can remember was Mike Riley (who also was a good coach who had spent most of his life in the West) at Nebraska, and that didn't end especially well.
That would be my main reservation about hiring him if we had been in the market for a coach. College football is still pretty regional and especially Western guys can have trouble adjusting to the East.

This is actually a decent hire. Decent, not sure fire.
