Michigan Stadium Getting New Light System
This was reported on yesterday but I didn't see it on the board. We've seen lighting systems like this at places like Alabama and nebraska. Something the Old Blues will grumble about and the kids will love.
i have been to one game at the pizza-rena and the light/strobe/extraordinarily loud 'beat' was horrendous x 10. i remember thinking how terrible it would be if someone who has that problem, or maybe an autistic child was taken to the game. PTSD for $85 a ticket. great...
I have no idea why they decided that having a bunch of rotating spotlights shining down into your eyes during all events at LCA was an improvement on anything.
Can't wait for Michigan to waste this money making the game day experience worse.
I'd like to see a new private cellular network put in the big house. Whatever is there today is terrible. Private cellular gives you unlimited free data (basically pay for the internet circuit) and doesn't step on the public cellular. It would undoubtedly make that better also.
Couldn't this be resolved with COWs (Cellular on Wheels) that can be brought in on game days?
Seems like it's an easy fix for the 8 days a year when we'd need better cell reception.
Any thoughts on when we would know the October 14 kickoff time? A friend is trying to come to the game from the UK, really hoping it’s a moon or 3:30 kick
I would prefer no further moon games. Ever.
Dang! I won’t edit my typo because your reply is very well done.
Giant steps are what you take . . .
Walking on the noon
Moonrise on 10/14 is 731 AM. Moonset that day is 653 PM. So if a moon kickoff means moon noon, that would be about 110 PM.
They will likely have to wait til October 2nd or October 8th to know the kickoff time. Not positive if they can make it a night game unless it's exercised in the 12-day window and not the 6-day window.
A lot of investment for Bowling Green. My maize colored glasses say that the BG and IU or Purdue games will be used to work out the kinks for what will be a loaded 2024 home schedule.
How many games before there is a significant game delay due to a light show malfunction?
Zero or one - depending on your defiition.
That story is just aggregated from my reporting.
Here’s my story with more details
Your reporting is MUCH better Alejandro, thanks for providing a link to your source article.
Quick question. How many times were those old, antiquated, outdated, crappy lights that are in there now actually turned on and used? I mean it's got to less than 25 times total given that UTL I was in 2011 and we havent had more than two night games a year since then.
Seems like a shit-ton of money to be spent on something so quickly deemed obsolete.
They were used more than you'd expect — any 3:30 p.m. game, for example, plus various practices and other non-football events.
Fun fact: ESPN paid for the old lights to be installed. So they really were no cost to Michigan, and probably saved some money since U-M used to have to rent lights and install them every time they had a mid-afternoon game.
also as someone who is in the stadium way earlier than Alejandro is for 12pm games, those lights are on at 5am...
cool story bro moment... in 2010 after they were installed i took a picture of them on so i could show my dad, about 2 hours before the game the suite server that took care of Alro Steel back then said that Mr Glick wanted to see them, so I got show him and Gary Moeller the pic...
Yeah I definitely should have linked your article instead.
remember when major outlets like sports ill had their own reporting and didn't just aggregate other peoples' work?
good times.
this dude seems worse than most. i'm not seeing any original work on his byline.
clicked on your link just in case that’s a thing still
I know everyone is focused on the lighting and video. Your article indicates a $5 million investment in audio improvements. I am really looking forward to a marked improvement in audio. I can't imagine the challenge of designing a system that functions well whether the stadium is nearly empty or has 115,000 people in it.
Wrigley Field just updated to a similar system this season. It was a big deal for like 2 days, then everyone forgot about it. Basically, it looks like someone flips the light switch on and off really quickly when they win.
So…just like Rutgers when they score a TD?
great. i already bring earplugs to fight DJ Dipshit's assault on my eardrums during every 4-minute TV timeout, now i have to bring dark glasses to night games so i won't have a strobe light-induced freakout.
New B1G TV contract is going to mean more marquee night games. Giddy up!
I was thinking more...
Who knew that at 40 I'd be considered part of the Old Blue crowd.
I’m all for the new scoreboards.
Hate the dumb strobe light idea and it’s not even installed. Also hate the stupid DJ
don't you know, being against the stadium turning into a damn eurotrash disco makes you an "old blue."
Just wait till you’re 70.
(Grandpa Simpson yelling at cloud)
I think it is time to bring this one back and have a fan experience and do away with the electronic fireworks.
Nothing brings in the 5* recruits like a 1940s era scoreboard
Million dollar bags would regardless of scoreboard.
Make it literally the Michigan Money Cannon—fire ziploc bags of cash instead of t-shirts
I’m fine with that particular scoreboard, especially the score vs OSU.
I'll be one of the first but certainly not the last to say "Let there be light!"
I was at this game a couple of years ago and I must say it was a pretty cool experience.
Black lights?
Lava lamps?
Any guesses how long until we see advertisements and alcohol sales in the stadium like most everyone else?
Word on the street is that Warde plans to have Natty (Light and Ice) advertisements and sales in Michigan Stadium once the team wins a natty.
I'm not sure but I thought the Michigan legislature was supposed to address that this summer.
I get it
The improved lighting will be nice, always thought half the fan sections looked dark and the field darker than most others. Whats not necessary is the flashy flashy stuff. Call me old, fine, but watching Alabama score touchdowns and those awful strobing lights is just terrible. It actually takes away from the moment tremendously and that goes for all sports.
Lets just watch the game and appreciate the players talents without all the stupid unnecessary bad idea Las Vegas stuff.
Personally, I don't care all that much about adding the effects. But my former college roommate who has a propensity to yell at clouds calls it, and I quote, "fucking bullshit".
