Better to plan like this then scale back than to commit to a scaled back plan when the numbers don’t necessarily support it. I mean most school were able to go remote within a week or so when this started. There’s still time to change course if the numbers get worse

And now that distance learning has some practice behind it planning to go live on campus with a sudden change isn't as daunting as it was to stop in our tracks in March. Might as well plan to return. It's a long way off and nobody knows what to expect in August

Also a Key Point from the article:

However, it is unlikely students will be able to gather in large groups or attend football games in the school’s  100,000-seat-plus stadium

Agree.  Good to hear that U-M is taking steps to move forward.

If it gets to be the case, come September, that casinos and Disney World are open, but schools are closed --- that would say something about our priorities as a society.

Hundreds of thousands die from a virus =good life needs to move on.

Several people die at the hands of police = riot and burn cities down.

our priorities are so fucked up it makes me sad.

Life is “moving on”. If you mean get back to normal, than no. Just because you’re bored with quarantine doesn’t mean we should just flip a switch and return to the way things were. Things are opening back up and people are pretty much free to do what the want with a few guidelines. And yet that’s still not fast enough for some people.

I wasn’t the one who downvoted you, but I don’t agree with several of your points.

”Things are opening back up and people are pretty much free to do what the want with a few guidelines.” Maybe on some parts of the country this is true, but in NY, Michigan, California, NJ, Connecticut and a few other states, this is far from true  restaurants and bars remain closed, in-store retail remains closed and, most importantly, kids are suffering immensely under “distance learning,” and completely restricted from having any of the in-person interactions that are so critical to their development (ie playing sports, participating in school plays and concerts, just being around other kids). Summer camps have been cancelled.  So how can you say that people are free to do what they want?  I know at least a dozen small business owners who are closing for good because They are still shut down.

“We can’t just flip a switch and return to the way things were.” With certain very narrow exception, that is exactly what we should do. We know a lot more about this disease than we did in March. For one, the childhood mortality rate is near zero. The mortality rate for healthy individuals under 60 is identical to that of the flu. So, kids need to return to the way things were before, young healthy adults should also largely be able to return to normalcy, BUT we should focus our protection efforts on those primarily at risk - elderly,  nursing homes, care facilities, hospitals, and those members of the population who have certain pre-existing conditions. Yes, those people need to have certain accommodations, but they does not mean that the rest of society can’t resume something g resembling normalcy, without all of the social distancing that was supposed to only be used long enough to flatten the curve (which has happened).

Michgoblue speaks the truth here.

NY state is still a ghost town where I live in the Adirondack park. Normally people would be starting to swarm up here. Instead, people are actively trying to stop tourists from coming. The streets are deserted.

And the worst are the kids. I have had two major court cases since lockdown among my students. Both involving abuse/violence. The kids are trapped and people are suffering.

Among my own kids, it is hardest on my 3 year old. He does not understand why his friends can't come over, why he can't go there, why he can't see his Ms. Lauren at school, etc. He has changed. My relationship with him has changed. This all needs to stop.

BUT 2.2 MILLION will die from this by May...oh...wait. no we need to flatten the curve and prevent overwhelmed hospitals...oh...wait...we have to treat this like a dial not a switch, unless my cabin and boat are in that region then yes like a switch, but I have a back to work group plotting...err planning your release and once I know my status as VP...you will know more. Hey what do you think of my sunglasses?#Detroit!

Logical reopening is long past...now that rioters...er protestors and law enforcement have abandoned social distancing we will see in two weeks where we land. I'm hearing big gretch has another two weeks in writing ready for press.

Lol calling out mommy issues that's a new one. What exactly did your shit post add in value besides  the same old insults tactic. Oh wait...you meant YOU are using dumb Facebook like posts rather than making any logical argument...got it. Sorry as you were. My mom has been gone for nearly ten years. It was sad, I made peace. Thanks for thinking of me.

LOGIC: we have been locked down for months. At this point even the CDC claims there is much they don't understand, they've waffled on masks, surface transmission, etc. The governor of Michigan had mad Zero logical sense in her  120 different executive orders to a point even the media, and fellow government leaders in state have no clue what to make of it...coming from my local rep when asked about reopening certain industries.

At this point she's done nothing more than show she's a good little democrat and wants to be a VP by clashing with most other state plans to return SOME normal.

I’m sorry you have issues with women in power. Masks were not recommended at first because the masks needed to go to hospital staff. If the governor of Michigan had not put in place the restrictions she did there is a good chance Michigan could have been in as bad as shape as New York. At one point Michigan was  3rd in cases and top 5 in deaths. I’m sorry you couldn’t buy seeds for a week in April when it was snowing but the stay at home orders worked.

You have continued to post the same shit on every single thread. We get it, you hate the governor of Michigan. Get over it.

The two key points in the OP's cite don't say much more than we already knew:

  • University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel told CNBC he is “very optimistic” the school will offer some in-person instruction in the fall.
  • However, it is unlikely students will be able to gather in large groups or attend football games in the school’s  100,000-seat-plus stadium.

I read about Brown's plan to reopen, which includes trimesters where students only attend two of the three, so the number of people on campus is staggered. People in dorms have no roommates, and there is a separate building/area for students who get sick and/or test positive. Michigan is probably too big to enact that kind of plan but I could see it working at smaller schools. I'd much prefer having detailed plans like this than schools announcing no students at all on campus at this point.

The ivies have tons of cash. My university was just throwing money at kids to make them go away. They ended up paying out 100% of everyone’s work study as free money and had millions in grants to take care of rent.

That’s outrageous. I shouldn’t have to risk my health and my families health to get an education. Do an online class option. And then maybe some football players can take the online class and have someone else complete the work, so they can focus on football.

Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your face. You sound like a germaphobe. It’s not that hard not to get sick and if you’re really worried take a semester off.

This is a bigger issue for your old as fuck professors who have to interact with hundreds of kids who lick toilet seats.

I expect there will be an online option for people who are super worried. They’re also doing a one semester leave of absence - which is usually a full year.  I’m teaching online in the fall, and my university has told us to expect large classes to go remote. They’re going to put 30 person classes in the huge rooms for social distancing.

In reality, there’s no perfect solution. Just keep yourself safe the best that you can.  Michigan is a good school, so they’re not going to fuck you over.

I’m not even worried about myself. I see my 86 year old grandma often. And I would rather not kill her if I can help it. And any other at risk person in society I may not even know.

michgoblue

I agree that you and those who feel the way you do should have alternative options for online and distance learning. But for those of us who are comfortable with the risk, by the same token, the campu should be fully open for in-person learning and activities.

Hopefully this happens. I know since my baseball playing sons college shutdown, he’s pretty much turned into a hippie/gypsy who really feels like his future is over. Getting these kids back on campus would be great for the younger folks if it’s possible.

I would expect UM to roll out a hybrid on-campus experience for Fall 2020 semester, where large lectures are offered as distance learning, but where students come in for labs, in particular, simply because one cannot do a chemistry lab from afar. This is the strategy the UC system will be using.

I hope we all will back soon to schools, colleges, and campuses. I miss it so much, I hope I will back and my motivation to study and will not use https://writix.co.uk/lab-reports-writing-service as much as I do it now must say distance learning was exhausting. Especially when we were supposed to do lab reports, it was something different do it from home, that is why students started to use writing services more and more.
