It's interesting to see the change in Gerdeman's attitude as the season progressed. He started out with a pretty cavalier attitude about Michigan; obviously believing OSU would steamroll in Columbus. That attitude has definately changed with each progressive Michigan beatdown (and an OSU loss to PSU).

He wants to be snarky, but we're just not giving him good reasons.

So he has to be more subtle, like pointing out that the last time we were on this kind of scoring roll, we lost our last game of the season . . . to Chicago 0-2 in 1905.

I guess he hopes history repeats - after a really really long time.

Hopefully the same team from the Maryland game shows up in Kinnick. It's always a tough place to play for Michigan, especially recently.

Good prep for the Shoe.

Seems like we're getting a lot of monkeys off of our backs. We won at PSU last year for the first time since 06. We won at MSU for the first time since 07. We haven't won in Iowa since 2005.

If you get a put bull that isn't so inbred that it's out of its mind, they probably are fine. The problem is, there is no brewing standard. What really is a put bull? Any dog that kind of looks like a pit is labeled a pit.

Good caveat about Speight--he has had to scramble some, but he hasn't faced true pressure. The jury is still out on Speight whether Speight is elite, but it's looking better every week. He's more skeptical than we are. In contrast, he is more sanguine about our linebacker tackling problems, thinking it will be impetus for correction and improvement--interesting take. I think most of us take it as a confirmation on a weakness.

He has elite speed and quickness and I think he could do well standing up as a hybrid LB/DE and containing the edge on run plays and reverses while still presenting a significant pass rush threat.  I would put him on the side of the field opposite Jabrill, and I think this would take a lot of pressure off the base LBs and the corners (particularly Stribling) to make tackles on the edge.

Thoughts?

I would imagine his 4.7 is equal to McCray's, not certain. He does contain though at DE as well as anyone I've seen at UM in years. He would definitely be a presence there, although I doubt at any point in his football career has he ever had pass coverage assignments. This is not because he would not be able, simply because he was always the strongest and one of the fastest players on any team he played for, thereby able to neutralize the oppositions best OLman in addition to funneling all running plays toward the numbers of the defense.

He (Speight) faced so little pressure in this game, however, that he was able to step into everything.

+1 Insightful.

This will be the key to the entire game against Ohio State IMO.  Can our O-Line and RBs give him just that little bit of extra time to make his read and step into the throw?

Speight has been doing great, but he is still not a quick read-and-release guy.  He's a big guy that needs a little bit of time to wind up and pitch.

OSU's DL rushes the QB like a bat out of hell.  Can Speight get enough time to step up and throw the ball downfield to Butt / Chesson / Darboh?

He has struggled some when he can't.  If he can, it's game over.

I love Michigan Monday. It tends to be an unbiased enemy account.

I do think the Game will come down to the trenches. How does our OL do versus their DL. How does our DL do vs. their OL? Whoever controls the lines, controls the game.

Some good insights there in to what OSU may try to do vs.  Michigan's D.

More griping bout Michigan's schedule.  Funny how that narrative has changed since the start of the season.  I get the bit about many home games, but its Michigan that is destroying good teams like Colorado and (maybe) Penn State.

"The other half is trying to sack Wilton Speight and having him spin away from you like a Roomba on a low battery." Best line of the day. Thinking of nicknames for Speight. According to Wiktionary, it means "woodpecker" in German. Hmmm

It's reassuring to see an OSU writer say that Don Brown will adjust to the issues Maryland exposed and "shut them down for the winter." It's one thing for us to say that--it could just be wishful thinking. Gerdeman saying the same thing makes it ring true.

I know Ohio State fans will point at Michigan's schedule as a reason for their domination, but you still have to look at what they are doing against the teams they are playing. The Wolverines are doing things they haven't done in over a hundred years, and they've had plenty worse schedules than this one in that time.

I think that's an important point actually - at the end of the day, your schedule is what it is and you do have to look at what teams do against it, and we've been unrelenting and dominating against ours for the most part. It really does help build serious anticipation for The Game.

maybe because i've seen more of the bigger blowouts type games in the past decade, but one of the more interesting points in this article is that this is the first season in their history that OSU has had 3 games with a point differential greater than 56. I know it isnt' easy to do, but that surprised me.

For all his talk about the schedule, he - like so many others - failed to point out that CU, UW, and PSU are all top 15 teams, and Michigan destroyed them.  Well, UW wasn't destroyed, but they were beat - and once M took the lead in the 4th, you knew UW wasn't going to score again.

He also paid a great compliment to Jake Butt:

"Tight end Jake Butt added a standard five receptions for 76 yards. Those numbers for Butt might not be a bad guess at a first half against the Buckeyes."

I really like the fact that an OSU fan admits that one of Harbaugh's favorite offensive positions is a weak spot for OSU's defensive coverage.  I'm looking forward to the ButtZone on Nov 26th...
