Michigan grad could win $1mil by betting MSU

Submitted by MichTits on

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet, but here's the ESPN story...

http://espn.go.com/chalk/story/_/id/12590198/man-1-million-riding-michi…

So the story goes that in early December after MSU had just run their record to 5-3 Michigan grad, Derek Stevens, strolls into the Golden Nugget and throws down a bet on MSU to win it all.  Obviously, with Izzo taking his team to the Final Four, the bet looks great now.  But as a Michigan grad, I was surprised to see him throw down so much on MSU.

Would definitely be crazy to see him take Vegas for a cool million.

I have actually won a couple grand between the BTT and NCAA tournament.  Sparty has covered all 7 games ($200 bet on each game), plus I bet on them to win the regional after the first weekend at +160 (200 bet) and I placed a 200 bet on them to win the BTT at 7/1.  When they were up on Wisconsin late in the game I placed a 200 bet on Wiscy to win at +450, which was a nice hedge on the BTT bet.  I do think the luck has run out and will be betting Duke to win and cover.  With all that said, I was still strongly rooting against them on Sunday, to the point where I threw the remote control when Louisville missed that FT to win.  Last but not least, I don't endorse gambling, but if you know what you are doing and stick to a plan, you can make money, but you have to be super disciplined and know what to look for.

My BS Meter is broken. You are saying you have bet on MSU to win every game since the start of the BTT, except the one game they lost where you switched to the other team during the game at the exact point in time that the odds most heavily favored MSU because they had a big lead? If you really did this, which I doubt, it has a lot more to do with luck than skill. But if you can really successfully predict things that a sportsbook thinks has almost no chance of happening, I am going to go against my Spartans and put my life savings on Duke.

A million is a lot crazier when it doesn't start with a 20 grand bet. The dude owns two hotels on the strip so this is probably going to be a nice bonus that hardly registers on his dollar-o-meter.

edit: I see multiple people think "dude owns two..." while reading this story

I'll have to use that one! No, but in all seriousness, and I don't mean to pick on you and I'm an ass for sort of calling you out...but it's time we find a new way to joke about the "two hated teams playing each other" scenario. The meteor, earthquake thing is old at this point isn't it? We all should work on this (again, this truly isn't directed at you, I'm just being a smart ass above!).

I'm still happier---by far---to see MSU lose.

As far back as I remember, I've always been anti-MSU to the point of wanting them to lose--- at everything--- always.  ALWAYS.  With OSU on the other hand, I've always enjoyed it more when they were winners leading up to The Game---it's much sweeter beating an OSU team that is highly-rated, even undefeated, so that their fan base can suffer to the max.

With State, though, lose baby, just lose baby, all the time!!  The more they lose and the lousier they are, the better, regardless of the sport.

That's a far better attutude than a couple years ago when Izzo rooted against us before the Indiana game.  He didn't root for Indiana, just against us.  The ironic part is that a Michigan win would have given Sparty a share of the B1G title (along with us and Indiana).  Izzo can be as big a douche as Dantonio when he tries.

Time to do some hedging. He should definitely bet on Duke to beat MSU, first of all. If he ends up with MSU in the finals he can place a massive hedge on the other team and guarantee himself a nice payout.

He's definitely already won a lot of money if he wants. But it's probably just about the gamble.

The easy matchups have run out for MSU. Now they actually have to beat teams like Duke, Kentucky, or Wisconsin twice in 2 days. Not happening when they scraped by against Louisville and Oklahoma.

but MSU winning the national title would be terrible. Ohio winning the nc was bad enough and I don't know many of their fans. Maybe if I lived in Zimbabwe and didn't have to communicate MSU people at all. When 90 percent of the people you know root for MSU and hate Michigan that would be icky money.

I would be the BIGGEST Spartan fan on the face of the Earth that day.

I would also hedge my bet, although it would be hard to do. You couldn't just bet Duke and Kentucky though -  because they would have to cover as well - or you could lose twice. You would have to buy the points. Really expensive bet, especially for Kentucky if they get there - which State won't

You would have to hedge Duke first and then Kentucky if State somehow got past them. I am not saying you couldn't walk away with some cash, but it would be expensive to do for sure. You might be able to guarentee yourself 200K if Duke won and knocked them out first. If they went on you might be able to walk away with 100k or so

If betting on MSU meant I could win a cool million, I'd be more than happy to swallow my pride for one night, too.

I'd expect any rational MSU/OSU fan that didn't already have exorbitant amounts of money to do the same with betting on us.
