Michigan grad could win $1mil by betting MSU
Surprised this hasn't been posted yet, but here's the ESPN story...
http://espn.go.com/chalk/story/_/id/12590198/man-1-million-riding-michi…
So the story goes that in early December after MSU had just run their record to 5-3 Michigan grad, Derek Stevens, strolls into the Golden Nugget and throws down a bet on MSU to win it all. Obviously, with Izzo taking his team to the Final Four, the bet looks great now. But as a Michigan grad, I was surprised to see him throw down so much on MSU.
Would definitely be crazy to see him take Vegas for a cool million.

Yeah... I'd still have a hard time rooting for them.
Lemme guess... Dude's one of those MSU basketball UM football fans?
""I bet $1,000 on an NFL game," said Stevens, who attended the University of Michigan but said he also pulls for the Spartans."

Actually hope he doesn't. Sort of was on the fence until I found out he roots for both teams after attending UM.
I actually bet $100 on the Spartans the last three games. I root to lose my money and if they win at least I get something out of it.
I have actually won a couple grand between the BTT and NCAA tournament. Sparty has covered all 7 games ($200 bet on each game), plus I bet on them to win the regional after the first weekend at +160 (200 bet) and I placed a 200 bet on them to win the BTT at 7/1. When they were up on Wisconsin late in the game I placed a 200 bet on Wiscy to win at +450, which was a nice hedge on the BTT bet. I do think the luck has run out and will be betting Duke to win and cover. With all that said, I was still strongly rooting against them on Sunday, to the point where I threw the remote control when Louisville missed that FT to win. Last but not least, I don't endorse gambling, but if you know what you are doing and stick to a plan, you can make money, but you have to be super disciplined and know what to look for.

The dude owns 2 casinos... Is he really taking Vegas, or just rearranging Vegas?
March 30th, 2015 at 11:30 PM ^
A million is a lot crazier when it doesn't start with a 20 grand bet. The dude owns two hotels on the strip so this is probably going to be a nice bonus that hardly registers on his dollar-o-meter.
edit: I see multiple people think "dude owns two..." while reading this story

It makes me wonder how often he makes these bets

NOTHING. ABSOLUTELY N O T H I N G would get me to root for MSU. Not now, NOT EVER!

MSU vs Ohio State?

Root for a natural disaster.

I root for a meteor to take out the venue.
We could be as callous as my mother (a huge Syracuse fan) - when Georgetown was playing Notre Dame once in hoops, my mom said, "I hope Notre Dame loses and John Thompson drops dead." Nice, eh?
If you have to say, "I don't mean to but"... then generally, you are. Find somewhere else to troll.
you just went "I don't mean to be an asshole, but... here I go."
I'm still happier---by far---to see MSU lose.
As far back as I remember, I've always been anti-MSU to the point of wanting them to lose--- at everything--- always. ALWAYS. With OSU on the other hand, I've always enjoyed it more when they were winners leading up to The Game---it's much sweeter beating an OSU team that is highly-rated, even undefeated, so that their fan base can suffer to the max.
With State, though, lose baby, just lose baby, all the time!! The more they lose and the lousier they are, the better, regardless of the sport.
Growing up on the west side, sparty fan was far more obnoxious than anybody else, and that alone fueled my utter hatred for anything of that ilk.
I hope they lose every game they ever play. Always.

If it benefits Michigan, even I can root for Sparty. Otherwise, I want them to get pounded into the ground in every sport, every game.
That's a far better attutude than a couple years ago when Izzo rooted against us before the Indiana game. He didn't root for Indiana, just against us. The ironic part is that a Michigan win would have given Sparty a share of the B1G title (along with us and Indiana). Izzo can be as big a douche as Dantonio when he tries.

If you wouldn't trade a michigan state title for one million dollars, you're a damn liar
but of course I'd do it

Time to do some hedging. He should definitely bet on Duke to beat MSU, first of all. If he ends up with MSU in the finals he can place a massive hedge on the other team and guarantee himself a nice payout.
He's definitely already won a lot of money if he wants. But it's probably just about the gamble.

hedging man. you can easily guarantee a very tidy profit if you can get the liquid capital.
March 30th, 2015 at 11:58 PM ^
The easy matchups have run out for MSU. Now they actually have to beat teams like Duke, Kentucky, or Wisconsin twice in 2 days. Not happening when they scraped by against Louisville and Oklahoma.

That million is dirty money. I would feel icky using it.

If I were him, I'd donate a chunk to Michigan. Perhaps Mott. It wouldn't clean up the money totally but at least I could look at myself in the mirror in the morning.

but MSU winning the national title would be terrible. Ohio winning the nc was bad enough and I don't know many of their fans. Maybe if I lived in Zimbabwe and didn't have to communicate MSU people at all. When 90 percent of the people you know root for MSU and hate Michigan that would be icky money.
90 percent of the people you know root for MSU??? WTF?!?! You need new friends dude.
I would be the BIGGEST Spartan fan on the face of the Earth that day.
I would also hedge my bet, although it would be hard to do. You couldn't just bet Duke and Kentucky though - because they would have to cover as well - or you could lose twice. You would have to buy the points. Really expensive bet, especially for Kentucky if they get there - which State won't
March 31st, 2015 at 10:09 AM ^
You could just bet the money line. If he's going to win a million if MSU wins, I'd hedge and put $500k on Kentucky at -300 or so to at least win $167k if MSU doesn't win it.
March 31st, 2015 at 10:28 AM ^
You would have to hedge Duke first and then Kentucky if State somehow got past them. I am not saying you couldn't walk away with some cash, but it would be expensive to do for sure. You might be able to guarentee yourself 200K if Duke won and knocked them out first. If they went on you might be able to walk away with 100k or so
I'd feel dirty, too ... but I'm betting that several margaritas while I'm sitting on the beach at Cabo would lessen that feeling.
March 31st, 2015 at 12:03 AM ^
I'd expect any rational MSU/OSU fan that didn't already have exorbitant amounts of money to do the same with betting on us.

What's wrong with New England?
They have three Wolverines and no Spartys.
