Michigan Football Has To Leave The Conference

First, a disclaimer: I am about 97% sure Michigan will not leave the Big Ten. But they should.

Here's why -- feel free to add yours!

  • The money factor can be mitigated. Especially as an independent, Michigan will be in a position to dictate terms of its own TV deal. Yes, leaving the Big Ten will mean leaving their sweet TV contract, but they can make their own. If they join a conference, like the ACC which has been suggested, they should be able to negotiate favorable terms upon entrance.
  • The expanded playoff helps keep Michigan relevant for the post-season. If Michigan goes to the ACC, that's still a "power X" conference. If there are super-conferences down the road, Michigan will be coveted. If they go independent, the NCAA will not be able to exclude them without affecting ND, which they won't do.
  • There are no academic issues for which Michigan needs the Big Ten (research, etc.). The conference needs Michigan much more than Michigan needs them.
  • Any desired rivalries can be maintained in some form. This is much easier if Michigan goes independent, but even if Michigan joins the ACC, there is room in the non-con schedule for certain games.
  • After what OSU has done here, "The Game" is rapidly losing luster and desirability for me. Even during the awful stretch where we lost so often, at least we were getting beaten on the field. But this? These actions by OSU are heinous enough where they've become MSU to me -- I don't give a shit if we ever play them again.
  • After what the NCAA and the conference "leadership" and the conference members have done and how they've acted, principle dictates, almost demands, that Michigan strike back with the most crippling power it has -- taking its prestige and power somewhere that it will be respected . Stretchgate was the tip of the iceberg. The 2016 officiating situation in The Game was a clear shot at the program and Harbaugh. Now this. Accepting rumor and shady PI findings as "evidence". The mob justice conference call excluding Michigan. The meeting to decide the extreme 3-game suspension without investigation or due process. The legal wrangling blocking any recourse Michigan would have. And the timing of all of it planned and executed to inflict maximum chaos, disorder, and hardship on the team. It's horseshit, all of it, and there's no reason for us to stay.
  • If we were to stay, something else will be fabricated and come down on us. It's not like staying the course is going to make everything better. So, it's time to go.

The NCAA and the Big Ten hate Harbaugh and Michigan, that has been made VERY clear. To paraphrase the fantastic comment by Bluesince96, would you recommend someone stay with an abusive spouse if they had money? Of course not, and we shouldn't either.

Thanks for reading -- sorry about the length.

Maybe we should let this story play out, find out what the facts are about the PI firm and the like, see what Michigan has on other teams and whether the league does anything about it before, you know, jumping to conclusions?

The acc is a a fourth tier conference. Horrible tv deal. Not the top conference in any sport but lacrosse. Fsu and clemson will join the sec at first opportunity. The destination should be tear down ncaa and start the fox/espn/sec heavy super conference. Its all about money and football in that order.

If you are concerned about academics, rivalries,  non-revenue sports, and other nostalgic interests, staying in the big 10 has the least amount of downside.

Horrible TV deal that Michigan has the clout and experience to renegotiate. In the B1G, Michigan seemed willing to let conference execs do the negotiating (likely with some representation from each school). But in this case, Michigan would bring a much bigger carrot and be in a position to negotiate for more favorable terms for itself and every other member of the new conference whether proportionate or fully equal.

EDIT: Another point - In the B1G deal, Michigan regarded the other conference members with greater equanimity and conducted its business in a more egalitarian way. I suspect that in future deals with the B1G and/or other conferences, the university will be much less inclined to do so and for good reason. They've seen what treating others fairly has brought them.

this is the crux of it all. regardless of all the other arguments, the following seems true.

someone in the B1G hired a PI firm to investigate a conference foe, and leaked findings to the media. This is in direct violation of “fair play” and “sportsmanship” far above and beyond stealing signs. The conference then goes out of their way to punitively punish Michigan without allowing due process to occur for the first time in history, setting a precedent they will likely never follow again (unless it’s Michigan).

The punishment does not fit the crime, and the fact they allowed mob rule to dictate their actions, which are drastically different from historical actions, speaks volumes.

Looking forward to watching all future M football games on the Wolverine Network while acting as an independent and choosing who we play and when.

MSU and OSU lose their biggest rival and MSU its only reason to exist in sports if we leave so that's good enough for me.

Larger question - why the hell is there equal sharing of revenue?  That's very good hearted by Michigan.  But tell me what % of revenue eyeballs ads Michigan brings in vs Northwestern or Rutgers or Illinois or friggin MSU.  They need to start pro rating these type of agreements.

SIAP but what happens to the FOX TV deal if we do leave? Does that blow it up contractually and wouldn't that be just desert for the cry baby coaches and ADs who are making this more than it has to be?  OSU, USC and few others would be fine but I think that the middling programs and teams will be more than screwed and may not end up in one of the 2-3 conferences that will remain in the next decade.  May you live in interesting times!

There are no academic issues for which Michigan needs the Big Ten (research, etc.). The conference needs Michigan much more than Michigan needs them.

The Big Ten Academic Alliance is a massive academic collaboration between the universities that includes the sharing of library resources, course sharing, professional development programs, faculty networking and more. All 14 members participate in the Cancer Research Consortium, where they work in unison on oncology trials.

While Michigan probably doesn’t “need” to be a member of the BTAA, and the ACC could probably form something similar, it is at the very least a huge benefit to being a Big Ten member

Petiti notified ESPN a half hour before Mich - on late Fri afternoon. He is destroying Michigan's reputation, as well as trying to destroy one of their best runs in a long time. This with the investigation not even complete.

And he didn't even notify FOX's President, who is unhappy to put it lightly. This is who the B10 has a new contract with. Treating them like crap too, just to take down Michigan. Michigan will never trust Peetiti or the B10 again. If there ever was a time to leave Michigan would, there is a 6-year contract with the B10 - so it would take a while.
