Michigan -18 over MSU: UPDATE

Submitted by FauxMo on

How about this for crazy? I think -18 is crazy-low. I was guessing -21 at least, and -24 at the high end.

But if I had told you two months ago UM would be favored by 18 IN EAST LANSING this year, how many psychiatric wards would you have sent me to???

I'll bet that line ends up closer to -24 than -18... :-DDD

EDIT: Just checked the line again, and it's already been bet-up to UM -21. Now THAT seems a little better...

"Second and third string?"  Now THAT is funny.

Harbaugh isn't going to take his foot off the pedal like he did for respected collegue Lovie Smith because he has no respect for Dantonio, nor does he see him as a "collegue."  I am guessng we don't see O'Korn until it's time to take a knee.

My beat guess:  Michigan 48, Sparty 17.

My "safe, shell-shocked from the past 8 years" side agrees with you. My "have you actually watched MSU play this year?" side thinks you and this line and nucking futs... UM SHOULD cruise in this game, rivalry or not. I would be 0% surprised if the final score was in the 49-14 category, and really only that close because Harbaugh plays more conservative...

we might blow them out, but odds are that we will get a strong game from them, and that it will be competitive at least for a while.  18 point win would be wonderful, all things considered.

We are going to get MSU's best game, and all they have to give.  Pretty much their season next week as bowl eligibilty is slipping away for them.  Of course we all (except for trolls) hope they cover, and agree we took the foot off the gas in 2nd half yesterday, and respect Lovie as a good coach, but the main thing is to Beat Sparty this game, and come out of it healthy.

MSU is in the Big Ten bottom four just above Purdue, Illinois, and Rutgers. This spread is kind to the Spartans. I'll be all over the first half spread if it's -14 or anything below.

and I have been somewhat outspoken aobut us blowing them out. I think Jim wants to stomp theses MFers. He seems to have a vindictive streak on the field, and I don't think he will pull any punches against Mork & Co.

That said, it's all they have to hope for, and I wouldn't be surprised if they cover. Rivalry games are a funny thing.

Game will be tougher than people think.

MSU has enough playmakers to make this a game. UM has to come out intense, focused, and relentless.

A caveat is if UM throws a haymaker early. MSU has not shown much resiliency as a team. The game could get ugly if UM starts fast.

O'Connor, McDowell, Bullough, Nicholson.  They have some talent, enough to give us trouble.  And Dantonio will have them ready.  Agree with the poster who said that if we get out early, it could be a blowout, but if they can cash in on early turnovers, it will be close the whole way and not decided until late in the fourth quarter.

MSU is in a huge tailspin.  But they are a way better team than Illinois.

OTOH, MSU's 0-line seems pretty bad.  Becasue M has such a great d-line and also Don Brown blitzes, this really limits any chance of MSU overperforming and somehow making it close.

IOW, the best possible matchup scenario for M is an opponent with a questionable o-line.

McDowell sure, and Corey a bit if you take into account him being a freshman. But O'Connor is terrible, Nicholson gets out of position all the time, and the most recent Bollough isn't like his brother in coverage or keeping his lane. MSU is bad. They have a couple of players. They'd be a coin flip against Illinois. But this isn't a team capable of matching UM in talent and more than the other schools UM has dispatched with this far.

He has tried to "have them ready" for five weeks - each more desperate than the last. If they haven't figured out a winning formula yet, it's hard to imagine that they will this time. I don't expect an epic beat down by the Wolverines; but it's going to be a fairly easy win.

Agree here. Shelton is their offensive threat, with even Corley being unexpectional at the moment in my opinion. Their D can be good, if they play up in this game and our passing game misses on the coverage busts or really poor safety coverage MSU offers every game. They could keep it close and a few turnovers could help them. 3rd and medium, exchange coverage and pick 6 that inevitable rub route!

I do not have an ounce of fear for their running game. We faced Saquon Barkley who is better than anything MSU has and he got nothing. Their only prayer is throwing up prayers to Corley and even that will only get them a few big plays. I really just don't see any way they break 10 points on offense without help from us by way of turnovers

Losing to MSU is impossible, just like there's no way OSU could ever lose to PSU. I'm just happy that I don't think there's any way Harbaugh and the team are taking this game as lightly as some fans are. There are some proud players and coaches over there who have been embarrassed this season. There's nothing they could want more than winning this game.

If any of you think that MSU won't be as prepared and focused to win this game compared to other games, then you're going to be brutally surprised. This program with less talent and even worse coaches have put up valiant performances and even pulled upsets against Michigan. All this spread does is add to their mantra of being disrespected. It'll be a slugfest and I'm not looking forward to the three + hours of stress.

I don't know that I've ever seen a Michigan team this laser-focused and out for blood in the Dantonio era. I've never been one for exaggerated pre-game confidence (for fear of Karma's swift retribution) but no amount of disrespect can propel MSU to even a close game this Saturday.

I've seen a lot of posts like this and I don't get them. Is it just trying to keep your expectations low so you can be pleasantly surprised? Do you think Vegas doesn't know that this is MSU's only thing worth playing for? Do you think this game isn't important to our players?

They are going to give us everything they have, and we are going to curbstomp them. If they get 150 yards I'll be shocked. No knock on wood. Bloodbath coming up.

How much was OSU favored by this weekend? Harbaugh's worst nightmare would be if the players were excitedly thinking about how badly they were going to curb stomp MSU.

Your counter example is that OSU lost to a team that we obliterated? That same team we obliterated is ranked and MSU is 2-5 and just got soundly beat by Maryland. They are not good at football. We are very good at it. And we match up fantastically. Don't overthink it.
