Michigan up 1 Spot to 24th in Coaches Poll

Submitted by FauxMo on

MSU dropped from the rankings after losing at the least frightening stadium in the Big Ten...

EDIT: Also worth noting that one-loss OSU jumped undefeated Wisconsin into the #3 spot. While I agree OSU's victory is more impressive than any win Wisconsin has all year, and Wisconsin shouldn't be rewarded for playing an easy schedule, this confirms to me that the voters will do just about anything to get OSU into the playoff. It'll be interesting to see if the same happens in the AP...

Nope.

Unless we choose to agree to it. That late in the season, the away team has veto power for night games according to Big Ten contracts.

Expect a 3:30PM ET/2:30PM CT kickoff on a nationally broadcasted network. Possibly Gameday to Madison as well if Michigan and Wisconsin both win the next two weeks (would be one of the few ranked matchups of the weekend and ESPN's only chance to get to the Badgers this year; they're almost certainly going to Atlanta in December instead of Indy).

I think the playoff top 4 should be:

1. Georgia (better wins than Alabama)
2. Alabama
3. Ohio St. (some other teams have an argument but damn, they looked scary good after the slow start yesterday)
4. Notre Dame (some other teams have an argument here but they’ve destroyed 3 ranked teams and have one 1-point loss to Georgia)

  • Both of Michigan's losses are to ranked teams; only one of LSU's is.
  • LSU lost to Troy at home, which is a much worse loss than ours to MSU.
  • Additionally, Penn State is a far, far better team than Mississippi State and LSU lost by 30 points to Miss. State (one point worse than our 29 point margin); the eye test was also much better. LSU literally showed no fight after the first quarter; Michigan came within 1 point late in the 2nd quarter after being down 14 and it was a one score game at halftime.
  • Michigan and LSU have one common opponent, Florida, and our result against them was significantly better. LSU only beat them by a single point in fluky fashion because Florida missed an extra point attempt.

Yeah, LSU has one win that's better than any of ours, but their losses are far worse and we also dramatically outperformed them against our common opponent. Without a doubt, Michigan should be above LSU.

Mississippi State and Washington State are closer to even and I can understand why they could be above us, but I think Washington State will lose this weekend to Stanford so we'll rise above them anyways.

Some coaches even admit they just let their Sports Information Director vote in their place since they aren't watching other teams. Valid point by SFBlue about Wisconsin though, they will likely crash to the finish like Michigan did last year and end up outside the NY6 or in the Cotton Bowl at best.

Yes. CFP values wins over teams with a wining record and Michigan doesn’t have any. They look at teams by blind resumes and Michigan has an awful blind resume. Their best win is over a 4-4 Air Force.

Michigan State has three wins over teams with a winning record -- Michigan, Iowa, and Western Michigan.  Sparty will definitely be ranked ahead of Michigan.
