MI Governor opens gyms, pools; organized sports can resume

Basically the ball is in the MHSAA's court.

BREAKING LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Whitmer says Michigan gyms can reopen, organized sports can resume, though recommends against contact sports

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Whitmer is not prohibiting contact sports -- football, soccer, basketball, many others - but releases state health guidance strongly recommending against it

Essentially, Whitmer is telling the MHSAA & youth leagues & school boards: You can play, but there's a 'high risk' of COVID transmission in contact sports: football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal, martial arts with opponents

Also, it looks like masks must be worn in ALL sports and inside gyms, including exercise, except swimming.

More weak sauce by those is charge.  If you don’t think it’s safe to have contact sports based on what your experts are telling you then don’t allow contact sports. Allowing contact sports but then issuing guidance that indicates you should not play contact sports is such obvious passing of the buck so you can’t get blamed for it. Why they hell are these people in charge if they refuse to make any tough decisions?

The same shit is going on in almost every level of government and among leaders in both parties. School reopening’s are a great example of this as well.  Say that you think kids should be in school.  In many places say the data supports kids in school.  Issue guidance that you damn well know the schools don’t have the resources and/or ability to follow or that will be so disruptive to keeping school open that they will eventually have to close.  Also be sure to note that local control is important, and the final decisions are up to each school. Then you are all set.  None of the potential outcomes are your fault.

Thanks for posting this WD.

Our grandkids are thrilled. They've been practicing after school and weight training BEFORE school and the protocol they go thru each day is crazy. At least now they can practice with a little more incentive.

And yeah... I’m hoping the same announcement is made soon for the Big Ten. These kids, high school and college, are safer under the football umbrella than they’d ever hope to be mingling with the general student populations.

I have read that many people despise the MI governor...people from both sides of the political spectrum.

Is that a genuine question or just some pre-emptory snark?

The choice between Biden or Trump is an awful one, imo.  Not any better than 4 years ago when it was Hillary or Donald.  I wrote in someone else for President last time and might do the same again this time around in order to keep a clear conscience (i realize that partisans on either side will hate this notion).  Or I might hold my nose and vote for whomever I think will do less damage to my kids' future.  At this point, still undecided. Not happily so.

It is clear that Trump's opponents are still making the same mistake, taking him literally but not seriously. His voters take him seriously but not literally. Trump voters don't care about hurt feelings or how America fares in foreign public opinion polls.

Trump voters care about the economy, law and order and American exceptionalism. Trump leads and excels on those issues.

don't you honestly think that this abrupt turn-around was motivated solely by polling?  the dems are getting routed in the sense that despite orange-man-bad hate having given them a 10-20 point lead in virtually all the polls, it's now a statistical dead heat.  this move by the gov was political calculus.  the election is biden's to lose and as i stated before, if they're not careful they are about to blow the biggest electoral lay-up in human history.

Its not really an abrupt turn around to go from mandated compliance to not-mandated, but strongly recommended against. That simply allows you to go from state-wide compliance to local decision makers adapting to data in their local community, which makes total sense based on Michigan's current statewide numbers.

But the fact that so many people are taking the current strong state health recommendation against playing contact sports as essentially "The Governor said we can play and its now totally fine!" sort of unscores why the earlier mandates were likely necessary.
