MI Governor opens gyms, pools; organized sports can resume
Basically the ball is in the MHSAA's court.
BREAKING LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Whitmer says Michigan gyms can reopen, organized sports can resume, though recommends against contact sports
— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020
Whitmer is not prohibiting contact sports -- football, soccer, basketball, many others - but releases state health guidance strongly recommending against it
— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020
Essentially, Whitmer is telling the MHSAA & youth leagues & school boards: You can play, but there's a 'high risk' of COVID transmission in contact sports: football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal, martial arts with opponents
— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020
Also, it looks like masks must be worn in ALL sports and inside gyms, including exercise, except swimming.

Just off shore from Epstein’s island

Love Big Gretch but this seems like an unnecessary risk at a critical time. Half these idiots can't get the mask up / maintain distance part of this right (or choose not to) and this seems to depend on even stricter safety measures.

I just looked at your numbers in Michigan (i.e. cases, deaths, etc.) and they look pretty good. Illinois doesn't look quite a good, so we'd like to get to where Michigan is.
September 3rd, 2020 at 9:18 PM ^
The two numbers that count the most, deaths and hospitalizations, have been trending down for weeks in both Michigan and the US. In Michigan, more COVID deaths occurred in April than the rest of the months combined. That was 4 months ago.
people are still testing positive, but not many are getting sick. Even Dr. Birx said this week that 99% of the population is not going to be affected by this.

Stay in your mom’s basement until Big Gretch and Sleepy Joe tell you it is safe to come out. Best if you don’t come out until mid-November.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
Mr.Jim, stay with your head in your rectum until your manbaby hero stops thinking for you. Best if you stay there indefinitely. It fits you.

Rjc, love big gretch? Something is wrong with u, Stretchen Gretchen is a moron, she says she goes by science. Well the science says ages 15-34 have a .0007% chance of dying from covid, so let’s not go to school and play sports
September 3rd, 2020 at 3:50 PM ^
There is high school futsal?!
September 3rd, 2020 at 3:51 PM ^
Dumb question. Will gyms allow people to play basketball indoors?
If not, it's odd that kids can play sports again, but they wouldn't allow the same competitions in gyms.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:33 PM ^
FWIW I know my gym will allow shoot arounds but no pick up games. At least that was the plan a few months ago when we got the fake out opening.
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:14 PM ^
Yeah that's probably what'll happen with mine.
And for awhile, that's fine. Being able to shoot around by myself is incredibly theraputic. I'll get my ass up at 5 if I know I can shoot around lol.

I know the Greg Grant Basketball Training Center is planning on having leagues start right away. He was just on the ABC local news yesterday talking about getting the leagues going ASAP. They are the only "house league" option since the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse close down. The facility will be packed.
September 3rd, 2020 at 3:53 PM ^
And here is the MHSAA's decision: let's play.
Every team will get into the playoffs. Only 2 tickets per player are issued. GAMES CAN NOW BE PICKED UP BY A THIRD PARTY MEDIA BROADCASTER. That hasn't been allowed previously in Michigan outside of the State finals.

Personally don't think this is the right decision but I hope I'm shocked by how few cases/little impact there is from this.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Yep. I would love to be wrong about the potential spread by this decision. I’m sure some communities will be largely untouched due to population density, but I’m not sure about the cities and suburbs.

I'm on this train.
Waaaay too many people don't understand that overreaction is the whole point. We SHOULD lead towards overreaction. Fauci or somebody said back in March that we'll never know if we did too much, but we'll DEFINITELY know if we don't do enough, and that's proven true.
This also exposes the nonsense behind the mandate vs. recommendation issue that the grown toddlers here love to whine about. It's super obvious just from this issue that the masses (or enough of the masses, anyway) are ALWAYS going to ignore "recommendations" if there's any inconvenience involved. This country is just fucked that way. So because we can't handle being adults, mandates are necessary if the goal is to be effective.

My girlfriend’s school district is going back in person. Social distancing in the classroom is considered a “recommendation” by the state, not a mandate. They have classrooms with the expectation of 30+ students next week. And now sports are starting back. I have no doubt that their buildings will be shut down within a couple weeks.

I teach at a high school in a rural district. We just finished our second week face-to-face. I'm happy to report that we are healthy so far and praying it stays that way. Praying for the best for your girlfriend and her district. My wife is an SLP and starts back on Tuesday, too.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:09 PM ^
My daughters just finished their second week of in person school. So far, so good. My compliments to the Principal and staff for the fantastic safety measures they have put into place to make this work up to this point.
Big thanks and respect to all the teachers out there right now.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
I said a prayer earlier this morning, and I think it was answered.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:09 PM ^
masked swimming..... could be the next olympic sport. after they recognized synchronized swimming, anything is possible.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:42 PM ^
Just confirmation that our healthcare system is a disorganized shitshow.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:25 PM ^
I hope this works out.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:31 PM ^
So it appears she is attempting to give people the data and pertinent warnings yet allow people to make their own decisions as individuals and family units on potential exposure and risk tolerance?
Crazy...
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
yeah, even though gyms are open, I have no doubt my gym will be able to stay under 25% capacity. Too many people are going to be cautious and take a wait and see approach.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:38 PM ^
No doubt I haven't gone back to mine yet and have chosen to just workout at home. I have a pretty good setup though.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
Gyms will have a lot of restrictions and I'll abide. I usually go in off peak hours anyway.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:07 PM ^
Yes, and we'll very soon learn (and already have learned) that when given this chance, a scary amount of people make unequivocally bad decisions that also affect other people.
September 3rd, 2020 at 7:48 PM ^
Easy for someone to say who lives in the middle of nowhere and has nobody to care about except immediate family.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
The internal polling has been crap for the D's. I think several Democrat governors are about to start looking like Republicans.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
You had the detroit public school superintendent blasting her. That ought to tell you something
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:48 PM ^
I know a Democratic politician closely. He's national level and he has said in confidence that the internal polls are bad for them in many swing states. Pennsylvania and Michigan especially.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:24 PM ^
exactly. you start to turn a signif portion of your own base against you, for instance reflected in the DPS superintendent continually going after her about the sports issue, and you know this was political calculus, just like the EO that prohibited it.

I can’t wait to come back here on November 4th to see all the conservatives crying in their beers. And I’ll head over to 11 Warriors for some desert.
Then we’ll see who’s really clutching their pearls huh XM?
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:50 PM ^
pearl clutching had to do with the 'nothing is good enough, where's gulliver, we're all going to die' diatribe that never ends. always a problem, always negative.
trump will lose the election, and if he doesn't, that will be one of the most epic blown lay-ups in human history. the problem is that genuinely nice-guy biden is at the point neuro-cognitively that if he was your/my/our grandfather, we'd be taking the car keys from him. why can't bloomberg get back in? how about bernie? or warren?
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:52 PM ^
Speaking as a conservative, 4 November will basically come as a relief. We don't like the Tangerine Goblin anymore than y'all do and frankly it will be nice to have this long national nightmare be over.
September 3rd, 2020 at 7:20 PM ^
Glad to know there’s at least one of you. I’m sure there are more, but very few are willing to speak up.
Hopefully you mean it and will actually vote to get rid of him. Sitting on the sidelines isn’t enough.
September 4th, 2020 at 7:32 AM ^
I "Felt the Johnson" in 2016.
I haven't decided what to do this year. I like Biden and Harris, but I'm not a fan of the Bernie influenced platform. I am also not a fan of Jo Jorgenson so no LP protest vote for me.
What is or is not enough for me to do is for me to decide, not to be determined by someone motivated by their own self interest and not sharing my ideology.
September 3rd, 2020 at 7:50 PM ^
Political trash talk. Is this what it has come to on good ol mgoboard?
September 4th, 2020 at 8:07 AM ^
Where the fuck have you been?
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:41 PM ^
This is welcome news. Let the games begin. Can't wait to get back to the gym.

You know, during the summer in Michigan, you can MRun outside, right?
September 3rd, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
The problem is that even though it is warm enough to run outside here in MI, the sun doesn’t rise until after 7am this time of year. For those of us that need to run early it means running in the dark if you have to start at 5:30am like I do. It just isn’t safe. June or July? I can make that work. September? Much more dangerous where I love. I could get through it in March/April because there was no traffic. Much different now.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:42 PM ^
About time.
September 3rd, 2020 at 4:43 PM ^
She opened the pools AFTER THE FUCKING SUMMER ENDED??? That's it, I'm voting for someone - anyone - that believes in QAnon...
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:05 PM ^
This is a huge deal for places like Bavarian Inn and Zehnders. They have water parks and that's a big attraction for the resort. They opened back in July but the pools were closed and the arcade is still closed inside. All the hotel was was rooms.
September 3rd, 2020 at 5:13 PM ^
And all of their activities were in a giant tent in the parking lot for the kids; which was fantastic when it was 97 degrees outside. I especially liked the heat stroke game. I got a lot of tickets from that one....
