MI Governor opens gyms, pools; organized sports can resume

Basically the ball is in the MHSAA's court.

BREAKING LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Whitmer says Michigan gyms can reopen, organized sports can resume, though recommends against contact sports

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Whitmer is not prohibiting contact sports -- football, soccer, basketball, many others - but releases state health guidance strongly recommending against it

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Essentially, Whitmer is telling the MHSAA & youth leagues & school boards: You can play, but there's a 'high risk' of COVID transmission in contact sports: football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal, martial arts with opponents

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Also, it looks like masks must be worn in ALL sports and inside gyms, including exercise, except swimming.

Love Big Gretch but this seems like an unnecessary risk at a critical time.  Half these idiots can't get the mask up / maintain distance part of this right (or choose not to) and this seems to depend on even stricter safety measures.

The two numbers that count the most, deaths and hospitalizations, have been trending down for weeks in both Michigan and the US. In Michigan, more COVID deaths occurred in April than the rest of the months combined. That was 4 months ago.

people are still testing positive, but not many are getting sick. Even Dr. Birx said this week that 99% of the population is not going to be affected by this.

Rjc, love big gretch? Something is wrong with u, Stretchen Gretchen is a moron, she says she goes by science. Well the science says ages 15-34 have a .0007% chance of dying from covid, so let’s not go to school and play sports

Dumb question. Will gyms allow people to play basketball indoors?

If not, it's odd that kids can play sports again, but they wouldn't allow the same competitions in gyms.

I know the Greg Grant Basketball Training Center is planning on having leagues start right away. He was just on the ABC local news yesterday talking about getting the leagues going ASAP. They are the only "house league" option since the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse close down. The facility will be packed.

And here is the MHSAA's decision: let's play.

Every team will get into the playoffs. Only 2 tickets per player are issued. GAMES CAN NOW BE PICKED UP BY A THIRD PARTY MEDIA BROADCASTER. That hasn't been allowed previously in Michigan outside of the State finals.

I'm on this train.

Waaaay too many people don't understand that overreaction is the whole point. We SHOULD lead towards overreaction. Fauci or somebody said back in March that we'll never know if we did too much, but we'll DEFINITELY know if we don't do enough, and that's proven true.

This also exposes the nonsense behind the mandate vs. recommendation issue that the grown toddlers here love to whine about. It's super obvious just from this issue that the masses (or enough of the masses, anyway) are ALWAYS going to ignore "recommendations" if there's any inconvenience involved. This country is just fucked that way. So because we can't handle being adults, mandates are necessary if the goal is to be effective.

My girlfriend’s school district is going back in person. Social distancing in the classroom is considered a “recommendation” by the state, not a mandate. They have classrooms with the expectation of 30+ students next week. And now sports are starting back. I have no doubt that their buildings will be shut down within a couple weeks.

I teach at a high school in a rural district. We just finished our second week face-to-face. I'm happy to report that we are healthy so far and praying it stays that way. Praying for the best for your girlfriend and her district. My wife is an SLP and starts back on Tuesday, too.

So it appears she is attempting to give people the data and pertinent warnings yet allow people to make their own decisions as individuals and family units on potential exposure and risk tolerance?

The internal polling has been crap for the D's.  I think several Democrat governors are about to start looking like Republicans.

I know a Democratic politician closely.  He's national level and he has said in confidence that the internal polls are bad for them in many swing states.  Pennsylvania and Michigan especially.

exactly.  you start to turn a signif portion of your own base against you, for instance reflected in the DPS superintendent continually going after her about the sports issue, and you know this was political calculus, just like the EO that prohibited it.

pearl clutching had to do with the 'nothing is good enough, where's gulliver, we're all going to die' diatribe that never ends.  always a problem, always negative.

trump will lose the election, and if he doesn't, that will be one of the most epic blown lay-ups in human history.  the problem is that genuinely nice-guy biden is at the point neuro-cognitively that if he was your/my/our grandfather, we'd be taking the car keys from him.  why can't bloomberg get back in?  how about bernie?  or warren?

I "Felt the Johnson" in 2016.

I haven't decided what to do this year.  I like Biden and Harris, but I'm not a fan of the Bernie influenced platform.  I am also not a fan of Jo Jorgenson so no LP protest vote for me.

What is or is not enough for me to do is for me to decide, not to be determined by someone motivated by their own self interest and not sharing my ideology.

The problem is that even though it is warm enough to run outside here in MI, the sun doesn’t rise until after 7am this time of year. For those of us that need to run early it means running in the dark if you have to start at 5:30am like I do. It just isn’t safe. June or July? I can make that work. September? Much more dangerous where I love. I could get through it in March/April because there was no traffic. Much different now.

This is a huge deal for places like Bavarian Inn and Zehnders. They have water parks and that's a big attraction for the resort. They opened back in July but the pools were closed and the arcade is still closed inside. All the hotel was was rooms.

And all of their activities were in a giant tent in the parking lot for the kids; which was fantastic when it was 97 degrees outside. I especially liked the heat stroke game. I got a lot of tickets from that one....
