MGoObituary: former Red Wing Petr Klima dead at 58
Very sad news. No cause of death announced.
That's a name from my childhood I won't forget. While no cause of death was announced, 58 is really young to die these days. Very sad...
This reminded me of that guy on the board with the same name. No further comment.
Was JUST thinking the same thing. I remember all to well his “boys will be boys” strenuous defense of the fraternity members who destroyed a hotel.
May the actual Petr Klima rest in peace.
That guy (not the actual Petr Klima) was one of the notable COVIDiots here, too.
You know he was problematic because I forgot about those things. I mostly remember him being super racist.
Didn’t he say US minorities have a simple palate or something hilarious? Legend.
For me, Klima was one if the first guys that showed the Europeans can play at a high level in the NHL. Kurri, Bure, Mogilny and the onslaught of Russian players thereafter really changed the NHL, for the better IMHO.
#85 dead at 58 is truly sad, but there's a nice numerical symmetry at least.
Before some of those names, there was the likes of Borje Salming and Petr Stastny... those were the players that put in the work for future EU opportunities.
Regarding East Bloc talent, there was no doubt they would succeed in the NHL rather they needed to defect first.
RIP. Gets to join his former roommate and drinking buddy, Bob Probert in the great beyond.
Not a coincidence they both died so young. Their internal organs were put through the ringer for a long time. Still very sad news. Petr was my first favorite defector.
FYI a co-worker of mine played hockey for a short period of time for the Rangers and told me a story about fighting Probert back in the day.
My friend wasn’t a great player and was more of an “enforcer” so one game he was sent out to fight Probert for some reason. He said when I got hit by Probert I actually thought he was holding a brick when he punched me. He said he’d never ever felt anything like that before or after in his career.
May both Wings RIP.
I always thought one right from Joey Kocur would end my life.
He was one of the bright spots I remember playing for the Wings way back, before they became really good. Always like hearing his name when they were coming up ice.
RIP Petr, we'll always remember you...
Way too young!!!! That is very sad.
I was a big Petr Klima fan back in the day - I still have the Little Caesars Red Wings souvenir glasses from the late 80s. Petr Lima and Shawn Burr - "Czech and Check". Tragically, Shawn Burr also passed away back in 2013.
RIP Petr
Remembering Petr and the good old days. RIP my friend.
NEVER wear polyester suits to disco clubs
I owned his jersey in middle school, until that bastard Eric Phillips stole it out of my locker during gym class.
RIP Petr.
I surveyed his property in Bloomfield, ca 1987-88. csb.
Damn I am getting old. 58. sheesh
Sad news - One of my favorite Red Wings, first player I remember as a fan. I had the pleasure of hanging out with him a few years back after a charity game in Steamboat Springs. (Red Wings Alumni vs. Blackhawks Alumni) He had aged much better than many of those on the ice that day, skating circles around his opponents. He was so excited that I remembered his Vernor's TV commercial from the 80's.
a) fuck everyone who brought politics of any sort into this. youre what’s wrong with this country
b) this saddens me. One of my favorites as a kid. I’ll always remember him and his silly JOFA helmet. I pray that wings the color red take him to his final destination, be it heaven, Valhalla, or whatever his beliefs were. RIP Petr
Great recall on that goofy JOFA helmet. RIP #85. He was on some fun (if not great) Wings teams that still have a fond place in my heart.

I must've missed something. The fuck happened?
The mods removed a bunch of the offensive comments.
There was a fight. Some punches were thrown. Now they're at the bar talking about how she didn't deserve either one of 'em.
Wow, too young!
This sucks. He was the first imported star of the revived Red Wings prior to the Russian invasion. Before he went wild partying he was a poor man's Pavel Bure. He lived not too far from me (and close to Groves, Seth!) and was a big time party-er and drinker. RIP.
He used to drive Jacques Demers crazy with his partying. The Goose Loonies incident was particularly not great.
But he sure had some fun moments creating magic on the ice.
Definitely remember #85. He was signed before my senior year at UM and was quite a talent. Went to a game after I accepted a job offer at Dow in early 86 and he was wizard on ice. Just couldn't get over the edge but won a Cup for EDM in 1990.
RIP, Pter!
