Men’s basketball questions

First can anyone tell me in recruiting what Juwan looks for in his guards and PFs? It seems like none of these positions have specific skill sets to go along with what Juwan runs.

Can anyone tell me what has TWill gotten better at since he has arrived on campus?? I’m not trying to trash the kid either because I was excited when he signed because I thought by the time he was an upperclassman he would really round into form. He can’t get the basket, his shooting is sub par, can’t post up, and I don’t think he is a particular good rebounder. Maybe I’m not seeing something.

Juwan’s in game rotations?? I’m completely lost at what he is trying to do there.

Juwan runs really good stuff on offense but his roster is a mess.

Program is just on a steep downward trajectory.  The offense is entirely reliant on Dickinson dominating down low, when he's not we don't have the secondary scoring to keep pace.  Defensive effort is inconsistent and this team doesn't seem to have the mental fortitude to pull it out in these tough, close games.

It's a shame, I really wanted Juwan to work out here.  But it's very concerning that this program continues to slide as Beilein's players have all left.

If everyone comes back from this young ass team we could be the conference favorite next year. Yes, its unlikely they will because that never seems to happen with our basketball team but there is plenty of talent.

Anyone expecting Dug to have a good first game at Breslin is kidding themselves.

The resolve shown to stay close in this game was impressive and a likely growth point. The shooting was bad but we held Staee under 60. Excellent work.

Michigan’s issue over the past few years is we continue to develop legit NBA players out of guys we expected to stay longer. Upperclassmen is how you win in college basketball. There is nothing wrong with Juwan’s recruiting or coaching.

The larger issue is Dug and Williams can't be relied upon to provide reliable scoring options.  I like Dug and think he'll get there eventually but as a freshman he can't do that.  Off the bench we have Baker and Reed (another guy that I really like) as decent options but not much else.  This team is so Hunter-centric that when he is anything less than dominant we struggle.  Even Izzo realized that and started doubling him this game which he hadn't done before.  If he leaves after this year, where does this team go for offense?

The defense was better but we still gave up a lot of open looks to good shooters like Hauser and Walker who thankfully didn't knock them down as they usually do.  And again, can they bring that defensive effort consistently going forward?  History doesn't suggest they will.

Nobody really expected Diabate or Houston to be here more that one year, but they did expect them to be better while they were here.

I think what concerns me is that we very simply have nobody to shoot the ball from deep.  There really is no way Michigan is going to be the conference favorite next year because there is no evident fix for that on the way.

I admire the resolve they showed to stay in the game today but there is no cure for what ails them right now.  I like every single one of Michigan’s players, they play hard, they don’t quit, and they are good kids, but we are going to be talking in here a month from now about another game that Michigan should have won if they could shoot.  But they can’t shoot.  That’s kind of the entire story.

Biggest key for 2023 is trying to keep Jett in Ann Arbor one more year. He’s a projected lottery pick but would be one in 2024 too. Hoping George Washington III comes in with some ball handling and shooting as well. Having Kante for some big spot minutes could allow Howard to play Reed and Hunter together more as well. Depends on who comes back though.

More Diabate.  If Houstan started over Jett we’d all be pissed (and there’s no way he would lol, Houstan went 2nd round in a worse draft, Jett is likely to go top 10 in a stacked one).

Losing Diabate was massive. For that matter, so was losing Johns.  T-Will isn’t giving much on offense and Johns was far superior on the glass and on defense

Some kids reach their potential in high school or freshman year in college.  They don't get better and there's not much the coach can do.

Reed will be a force down low by year’s  end. Hunter just frustrates the shit out me.

This goes without mentioning the shooting.

I think TWill is what he was expected to be -- a low-ceiling player you hope becomes a solid role player on a good team. Unfortunately, he's not on a good team.

I was just actually looking at Michigan's 2023 & 2024 recruiting profile and it did strike me how lightly this staff is recruiting the guard positions.

Currently they have one guard (Washington) committed between the 2023 & 2024 classes. They also have two traditional centers committed across those same classes; neither of which look like they are realistic candidates to play the stretch 4. [EDIT]: They have two guards across both classes, not one. The recruiting services however do not consider them to be strong contenders to land additional guard prospects in either class as of now.

Building a roster around a high impact center with quality depth can certainly still work, but I think if you do that you need to surround him with great shooters to give him space to operate. All of last season and all of this season so far, juxtaposed against the 2021 Final Four roster, demonstrates how the offense bogs down significantly when an opponent doesn't have to respect the three point line and can just clog the lane and sag off your perimeter players.

I do think Juwan is a very good strategist and in-game coach, but I am wondering if he needs to re-evaluate his recruiting strategy. They need to get some shooting to pair with these high level centers they intend to bring in over the next few years.

That is true, I think a better way to phrase what I mean is: it's never a bad thing to have a center that can dominate a game offensively if that's where you want to focus recruiting efforts.

However, if you don't pair that type of player with a few legit scoring perimeter threats it's extremely difficult to win anything of significance. To truly get the most out of Dickinson and Reed and the players like them that come after, you have to be able to space the floor. Right now, outside of Jett Howard, there is no one on Michigan's roster that teams have to account for at all times on the perimeter; and there hasn't been since Franz and Isiah Livers left for the NBA.

I don't have any issue with Juwan focusing his roster construction around punishing big men that can dominate offensively in the paint; after all his trademark in the coaching profession is developing big men into highly skilled scoring options, But until we either develop or recruit perimeter players that will shoot you out of the gym if you're late recovering, Michigan's offense will be vulnerable to bog down, regardless of how good our center is offensively.

TWill isn't just the worst starter on the court, he's even worse because he thinks he's the best. You know he was screaming, "KOBE!!!" in his head when he bricked that wide open late three off the side of the football stadium. He's getting 2nd most minutes on the team and our only good runs came with him on the bench.

I like Juwan. I trust Juwan. And still I can't fathom what he's seeing in TWill as a primary starter. He's a hustle player and could be a great one, but he's playing selfish basketball on O and slipping on D. Hell, Joey Baker missed all his shots, but at least they looked close - and he had more boards (in less than half the minutes).

What do you think he's saying, "I hope I don't miss this shot too"?

The guy misses wide open shots all over the place that he jacks up regardless of shot clock or open teammates. That late three he missed was a game killer. He got burned (again) on defense. He turns the ball over. He boards about the same as Dug. What's he add on the court? He should be a 10 rebounds and 4 points type of player and would be a great value to the team if he were.

dahblue

January 7th, 2023 at 8:03 PM ^

He was -14 on the game.
He was indeed WIDE open on that 3. He missed by about 17 miles. Good shooters don't miss by so much, and that's not a fluke for TWill. He misses, badly, with frequency. What's the problem with focusing on D and boards, and slowly allowing his offense to come into play?

dahblue

January 7th, 2023 at 9:49 PM ^

I don't mind a cocky player, though I don't think he's cocky. He's not good enough to be cocky. He takes bad shots and misses most of them. He jacks them up like he's running at the CCRB. Cocky? No. Selfish momentum killer? Yes.

As for "never shoots" - He's taken more 3's than everyone on the team except for Jett and (barely) Kobe. At the same time, his 3-pt % is lower than 9 players on the team. He averages less steals than every starter. He averages (far) less assists than every starter. He is, however, 2nd on the team in rebounds. So - focus on that. Play hard. Rebound. The rest will come. Otherwise, Juwan won't be able to remain patient much longer. If he wants to shoot so much, he better start making them (or at least coming moderately close). Generally, if your shot is as likely to hit an usher as it is the backboard, shooting isn't your cup of tea.

How's that for a cleanup? Your dude is an albatross on the court because he refuses to focus on the one thing he's good at.

My dude?  I don’t have some special fondness for Terrance Williams.  I certainly don’t view him the way you do though.  I also remember him carrying our ass through the last 8 minutes of the first half in a must win at OSU last year, and crashing the boards for two buckets that put us in the Sweet 16 last year.  I think you are being way, way too harsh.

January 8th, 2023 at 2:43 PM ^

Cool, cool. You're willing to overlook his play in 98% of his minutes because he (in your opinion) "carried our ass" during 8 minutes of one half last year (and rebounded well in the round of 32 last year). Ok, no argument. Let's assume that's 100% correct.

Still, that has nothing to do with his poor performance this year. Has nothing to do with his lack of effort on D, his bad decisions on O, his terrible (and frequent) shooting from 3. Look, I'm not saying he's a bum, a bad person, etc. I'm just saying that he shouldn't be starting and should instead be a hustle player focused on D and boards. Stats don't lie - he's the biggest negative player on the court this season, and his selfishness on the court certainly doesn't help.

You are purporting that Williams believes himself to be more than what he is, while I am saying he knows what he is and does his best to be that.  He should not be starting.  I agree.  Either Diabate or Johns should be starting.  But they aren’t on the team and Williams is what we have.  I certainly don’t think he should be behind anybody we currently have on the roster.  Williams has had a good career thus far at Michigan.

How much emphasis does Coach Howard put into fundamental shooting?

Jay Wright (and Beilein) emphasized fundamentals and we never saw this level of inconsistent shooting.
