Men's B1G Swimming Championships - Day 2
U-M has put 16 swimmers and one diver into tonight's championship, consolation and bonus finals.
500 free - 1, 2, 9, 10, 12 and 21
200 IM - 1, 2, 3 (!), 12, 16, 20
50 free - 1, 5, 14, 21
1m diving - one guy in final tonight
Paul Powers did a 19.03 in clinching the top seed in the 50, setting a pool, meet and school record.
After last night's two relays, we are up 128 to IU's 112 and OSU's 106.
GO BLUE!!

Lets go swimmers and divers. And Mike Bottom
February 25th, 2016 at 3:50 PM ^
Damn 19.03 is fast. Fastest I ever swam 50-free was 24.57.
February 25th, 2016 at 3:53 PM ^
It's ridiculous - you and I both would have been floated out of the pool because of the wake these guys make.
February 25th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
The college-level elite sprinters can really move the water. My son's a distance freestyle guy, but I appreciate the brute strength of sprinting.
February 25th, 2016 at 7:59 PM ^
And the sprints have gotten SO much faster over the past few years, for both men and women. I broke 24 seconds in the 50 a few times, which was respectable at the college level 15-ish years ago. (I'm female.) Now I'd be getting blown out of the water by practically every sprinter in D-I.

my 50 breat was almost faster than my free. sad.
swimming when you are built like a center, football not b-ball, does not translate into fast times.
February 26th, 2016 at 6:56 AM ^
Just to make it to the other end of the pool before sinking.

Looks like IU has 14 swimmers and one diver while OSU has 12 swimmers and four divers.
February 25th, 2016 at 4:23 PM ^
If preliminary 1m diving placements held up for finals, UM stands to lose 20 pts to IU. The 17th through 24th places from the prelims also get points even though they do not dive tonight.
Freshman freestyler Mokhtar Al-Yamani has had two very disappointing swims so far...well off his season's best times, in the 800 fr relay and the 500 free. Appears he is not in top form for whatever reason. Need points from him in the 100 and 200 frees yet to come.
February 25th, 2016 at 4:26 PM ^
Sometimes in swimming you're just off for some reason and maintaining the pace they do over a full season I have to imagine can be pretty tough. In any case, looks like they got a really good one in him for the future.
February 25th, 2016 at 6:54 PM ^
500 free results:
1) Anders Nielsen, Michigan (he appears to have more in the tank because he came home in a 24.59...)
2) some badger
3) Patrick Ransford, Michigan
We also got 9, 10, 12 and 20. Michigan 244, OSU 186, IU 185.5

Crap - I have to run to the store. 200 IM coming up, and then 50 free, 1m diving and then the 400 medley relay. GO BLUE!!!!

Maryland had to dump their men's and women's swimming programs right before they came to the B1G (ran out of money in the AD....)
February 25th, 2016 at 7:48 PM ^
Maryland and Rutgers both had teams but they couldn't afford to keep them. Illinois dropped swimming in the early 90s as did Nebraska.
February 25th, 2016 at 8:12 PM ^
nebraska had a swimming team back in the mid 80's when i was at OU. only 5/8 schools had swim teams.
I was the alternate diving judge -- 1M springboard.

it was a long time ago, and many beers ago...
Also, OU held th Womens Big8s not the mens.
I did judge the diving though -- that i remember correctly
February 25th, 2016 at 7:50 PM ^
LOL I caught that edit.
Purdue may be 0-57 against us all-time (seriously), but at least they're decent at diving.
February 25th, 2016 at 7:52 PM ^
Seriously, other than football and men's/women's hoops, does MSU have an athletic department? What a piece of shit program they have in EL.
February 25th, 2016 at 8:03 PM ^
Nope. They're fine with being losers in everything else, I guess.
What's odd is that they were still a disaster when their football coach was slapping himself in press conferences.
How can they possibly explain retaining a softball coach that went winless in conference a few years ago and was accused of ordering an assistant coach to intentionally hit a player in practice?
They're a bunch of weirdos out there. Their fans are all strange people, each with their own inferiority complex. I don't need to tell you they're obsessed with us. Their radio station of choice tweeted out an article on it.
I wouldn't be surprised if they think a lightning bolt would strike a person who says they are an MSU fan and didn't attend the school.
You piss them (and OSU fans) off not by insulting their team, but rather supporting Michigan.

It's crazy how fast these kids are..I feel like the non-swimmers can't fully appreciate how ridiculous some of these times are, but they are absolutely absurd..
February 25th, 2016 at 10:20 PM ^
Most non-swimmers will see, if interested, the Olympics and the 50m pool. Watching these guys do 25y pools, just blasting, is mind-blowing. Fun to watch.
February 25th, 2016 at 11:18 PM ^
18.85 in the 50 Free....I just...wow....
Looking at those 500 times was pretty depressing. What used to be considered fast (4:24) barely qualified for the 'A' consolation final. Those boys sure are fast yesiree.

February 25th, 2016 at 11:30 PM ^
Just to toss a little more fuel into the fire, the fastest 50y free is 18.23...let that sink in, and the holder, Caeleb Dressel, is still in college as a Gator.
