They’d be nuts not to give him one. They’ve hit home runs on their last two hires. They don’t want to risk him walking out the door and them having to go through the hiring process all over again, possibly ending up with someone who could undo everything that has Dantonio and Tucker have done.

If I’m Tucker, though, I’m testing the waters to see what options are out there this season. Saban may still be at Alabama, but this season shows that there could be some blood in the water down in Tuscaloosa, and he can’t possibly be looking to stay past his current contract. He’ll be 75 anyway by the time that’s done, and once he leaves there will be a serious power vacuum in the West. LSU is probably in one of the best positions to seize on that opportunity.

Meanwhile, he could stay here, but OSU is not going anywhere anytime soon. They’re not slowing down, and keep finding ways every year to just keep getting better and keep recruiting more and more difference-makers. Good luck getting past them more than once or twice a decade.

His ability to achieve what he wants will undoubtedly be more within reach at LSU.

Why??? Because he beat M two years in a row. He just lost to Purdue. His track record before MSU was not that good either. Seems short sighted. He has to prove a lot before I would give any contract like this.

Tucker looks really good right now, but his career trajectory is really odd. How much of this year's success comes from stumbling into a Heisman finalist on Wake Forest's bench? He has a losing record in his other two seasons as a head coach and schools are throwing piles of money at him.

Michigan should not fear Mel Tucker as MSU's coach.  Our coaches should probably do some more self scouting and blend that with the knowledge that Mel's teams will just point at our weakness, making some simple in-game adjustments possible where they were apparently impossible the last two games.

Honestly, I hope he stays. I think he found a diamond in the rough in Kenneth Walker (give him credit for that, it is deserved), but without walker, this season would be completely different. I also feel that Sparty has had pretty good fortune this year. How many teams get significantly outgain in about half their games and still have an 8-1 record? Again, give him credit, but I don't think the results they are seeing this year will be the norm going forward.

If he leaves, I think Luke Fickel would be a prime candidate for the job and may take it this time around. I know many on this board don't believe Fickel would take the MSU job, but he may find that to be an easier path to making the playoff than if he were to stay at Cincinnati. And for those who say moving from Cincinnati to MSU is a lateral move, it simply is not.

A commodity needs to be addressed regardless of how the remaining games go. If he's being talked about for a handful of coaching jobs across the country and MSU wants to keep him, better meet or match other potential offers.

I remember when a Michigan coach was a hot commodity.

I honestly have no idea if Mel Tucker is a good coach or not.  He had a mediocre resume when he was hired and they were dogshit last year (but that is certainly understandable).  They’ve been good, but objectively not nearly as good as their record, this year.  Seems like smoke and mirrors.

What I do know is that Mel Tucker staying in EL certainly doesn’t register as something that makes me fear them.  It seems like they are buying really, really high on him.  But given their position, probably the right thing to do

Tucker seems like a decent to solid HC. Seems to run a good program. His team isn’t as dirty as Dantonio had them, and also isn’t as UM hating as he was. There really isn’t anything about him that seems special though. Not anything interesting on O, and as a “defensive coach” he’s not been able to scheme anything to mask his awful pass defense.

If I were to predict, I would say if he stays at MSU for the long run he is akin to Pelini at Nebraska. 8-9 win team. Win some games they shouldn’t and lose some Maryland or Rutgers games. I don’t think he ever makes it to Indy and he doesn’t ever come close to Dantonio’s 2011-15 levels of success

Funny you say he won’t make it to Indy when he’s 8-1 this year and control own destiny. Sure osu seems like a loss but that’s not something I would claim on tucker right now with the season Msu is having. He has a much better chance to reach Indy than you say

Window dressing for recruits I still think he’s leaving, based on history.  Ask Colorado.  Fwiw I hope he stays and gets lit up in A2 in 22.

As it turns out the talk of Tucker to LSU was not likely of substance. His history as a head coach is not long enough, and not successful enough. LSU wants a sure fire, home run hire.

The talk of Jimbo Fisher (because of his connections with the LSU AD), and Billy Napier, HC of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, are the only names persistently come up now.

Apparently they want someone with a long track record of success. He's only been a HC for less than 2 years. There aren't too many names that have a history. Napier is probably the only one. Because it seems bizarre that Jimbo Fisher would leave A&M right now. He's going somewhere with that program. They just beat Alabama this year. But who knows.

I just want a clear win over Penn St today. My head is there.

I again want to point out that if all things being equal with pay, why would Tucker want to go to LSU instead of staying at MSU?

He's not getting fired for going 8-4 at MSU, and would at LSU. Power and security are something he'd have at MSU over LSU.

good.... can't wait for Michigan to even the score

oddly enough, I don't hate him like Mork...  you have to admit he's done a good job for them and so far I see no character issues like Meyer and that last POS shit Sparty had as a coach

I mean, is there 'really' a home run coach out there for LSU?

Tucker looks like a guy on the rise to me, and has a lot of good, wide range of experience, including being with Saban at LSU... some of the other names being mentioned like Riley (who will get destroyed by SEC defenses btw) or Fisher (I doubt he jumps to another job after only being at A&M four years) are typical fanbase pipedreams

Billy Napier seems like as much of a reach as Tucker, and certainly is not a sure thing.

I don't care if Tucker stays or goes, but certainly expect Harbaugh to be able to out coach him in more than half the matchups....

Napier won the Sun Belt West every year since he took over. They beat Appalachian badly this year. They almost won a very, very close game with Coastal Carolina last year. His QB just broke a TD record this year. And they were a bad team when he took over.

But who knows. They can't hire another Ed Orgeron, which is what Tucker could become in the SEC with his horrid defense.

LabattsBleu

November 13th, 2021 at 2:17 PM ^

sure, but its the Sun Belt.

The point wasn't that Napier wasn't a good coach, it was that if LSU is looking for a 'sure thing' and didn't think Tucker had a ton of good years as a P5 Head Coach, a Group of 5 winning head coach has just as many question marks imo

There are very few sure things out there... Tucker took an absolute tire fire in EL and is in the CFB playoff conversation in his second year...That's impressive.

Is it sustainable? Don't know...and it's not something that anyone can really predict.

If it’s unconfirmed, don’t report it. Also, is it really news that he’ll get offered an extension? Like, duh. That’s just a reporter “reporting” conventional wisdom. But getting offered an extension doesn’t mean he still won’t take another job. It doesn’t take him off the market. Colorado offered him an extension too.

It is just beyond frustrating. MSU gets it right again and Harbaugh has this team as a national punchline. Losing on the road yet again. Why can’t Michigan figure this out? This is ridiculous.

They've only had one sell out home game this year, and that's b/c Michigan fans were buying their tickets!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!!

Good for him, I guess!!!!

Case in point: MSU, had only 67K at the game with Maryland.

Spartan Stadium's capacity is only 75K, but they can't even fill that when they're ranked #7 in the country with a BIG championship and playoff berth still possible, with a strong Heisman contender to boot.

Mel Tucker is a fine coach from what I can see, but I really don't want him leaving MSU with a 2-0 record vs Michigan. I think he's been a bit fortunate to do what he's done so far. I hope he signs a huge contract, Walker goes to the NFL, and a few years from now MSU is back to being a middle of the pack Big Ten team with an overpaid head coach.

A stopped click is right twice a day. Rico Beard would give his left testicle to be right once a month, and his right testicle to be right once a year.

It would make perfect sense for MSU to offer an extension, but I'll wait until it's official.
