McGary's decision.....any tea leaves?

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on

The last of the NBA decisions and it figures to be a dousy either way.  Mitch is a HUGE piece of the puzzle and his return places us back within the collegiate elite.  If he goes pro it would obviously be a huge blow given the loss of Morgan and Horford already.  I have nothing concrete on Mitch's decision but it seems to be trending pro-NBA based on some of the reactions of Spike at the Banquet last night and some of these new mock drafts.

A few days ago it seemed that the general concensus was that Mitch was likely to be back in the fold.  The last few days have seen a sort of shift in that regard and that makes the Horford decision and the staff's seemingly relaxed big man recruiting the past few weeks a bit strange.

Does anyone have anything suggestive of how Mitch is leaning at the moment?

Seems like there are some definite positives to staying in school in this case.  Him and Caris would dominate the B1G next year.   On the contrary, if he recieves a 1st round grade after not even playing this year and has legitimate re-injury concerns....maybe he makes the jump.  I just hate to see him throw himself to the wolves (NBA Gms) who will certainly tear his injury and lack of extensive production apart.  I would be upset to see him slide into the second round or remain there however you want to view it.  Mitch is a lottery pick if healthy next year point blank.

ygritte has already said " you know nothing Jon snow" in the show as well. stop trying to read so much into a quote that you turn it into a nonexistent spoiler

Glenn's announcement day that "I would hope so" when asked if Mitch was returning. He seemed to know he was returning. Obviously if it was a sure thing we would know by now. It seems, given Robinson's comments, Beilein wants a player to have both feet in, whatever his decision and by most accounts Mitch isn't there yet. My guess has been that Mitch would return but had some doubts. At this point though I don't know.

And beware of the rainbow fractals that rise from the ground unexpectedly. Sounds like you might need that advice tonight. But on the topical note, what was it exactly that Spike said? And on a Juiceman related topic again, it's sad there's no more naked mile. Nothing more exhilarating than running through the fish bowl and law library completely nude and not getting arrested.

JmBlue says it and you lemmings follow his dumb ass right off a cliff. Lol. No time to convince you internet losers of my status but I'll try...I never said I was 21-22 yo did I? I merely said I'm a senior at UM (A2 Bitches) and that I have school-aged kids. Truth and truth. I also said I'm very good friends with a couple starters/stars of the team (actually travel w them and even crash at their apts sometimes) and casual friends with many others on the team. More truth. Are these things impossible? Perhaps so, if you're a Davenport U retard who sits behind the computer all day speculating, with no connection whatsoever to the school or team. That would probably prompt you to say dumb shit about matters you have no idea about I suppose.

Did you dummies that say I am not a student (double major, DAAS and POLSCI '14 continuing on to PhD at Mich bitches) even GO to Michigan yourselves? Doubtful. Maybe you just sit around fantasizing about and idolizing teenagers as if they're Gods. Or dreaming that you went here, but you really went to...Davenport U or some shit. Lol. In the meantime, I'll be porking undergrads, turning up for graduation, and living a life that you dumb asses could only dream about. Fake insider. LOLOLOLOL!

PS..Thanks to those that congratulated me on my graduation...it's been a long time coming :)

but that is just my opinion. Somehow he seems to generate so much positive stock from the smallest things (ex. 6 good games last year and a few "dominate" practices recently according to GR III?). I have never seen someone create so much buzz and do so little before.

My main question is why was Jon Horford saying he knew what Mitch's decision was? Clearly he didnt, because the decision still hasn't been made.

Also, if Mitch were to leave what are your thoughts on his time at Michigan? I would be very disappointed. He came in as a highly rated recruit with big expectations and I don't believe he met those expectations (partly due to injury, which is not his fault). In terms of last year though, he really only had a handful of good games.

Well I would feel sort of cheated - not due to anything from him - but he did not come in as a one and done and essentially we got 1.25.  At one point he was the #2 recruit in the country and he struggled the first 3/4 of his freshman year, even being benched for a half I believe vs PSU in February or so of 2013.   Then he caught fire, gave us a glimpse of that #2 type recruit for about 8-10 games and excited us with promise for 2013-2014.   Then we saw what was probably 70% Mitch on and off while the team was still finding itself and that was the last we would have every seen of him if he goes.

I think if he came in and did a Randle and starred from day 1 and left after one year you could just understand it more and the contribution would have been season long.  Essentially he played to his full potential (either due to injury or not being ready) for maybe 10 games at UM.  So just for that fact you feel cheated as to not being able to see him play to what he could have been if healthy and/or an immediate contributor like most kids of his ranking.

We are just not a place that will get a top 5 player in the nation very often - maybe Webber and Mitch (Juwan?) off the top of my head in the past 25 years.  They probably didn't really do ranking much earlier than that.   Juwan and Chris came in immediately as impactful players so I think before we saw Mitch many of us heard of a 5 star center and though if not to that level he'd be forceful right away.  Again, he put it all together very late in his freshman year and you saw what all the hype was about - esp vs Kansas (wow).  If he had done a full year of that you could leave content in today's day and age.

Actually, most people assumed McGary was a one-and-done guy during his recruitment.

As for top 5 guys, Jerod Ward was one, as was Kevin Garnett (who would have come here if he'd qualified academically).  If you expand it to the top 25, the list is pretty extensive.  Recruiting has not historically been a problem for us.

Was "defiantly" the most "dominate" player in the tournament last year. Led the team to a Final Four with his play. How that could be deemed disappointing is bewildering to me. Wait...I'm sure he was so underwhelming that you probably don't even want him back, right?

And he for sure came in with the distinct possibility of being a one and done (new term is "succeed and proceed"). Any player that's the second ranked player in his class (well, he wasn't the second ranked player in his class, but I get where you're coming from) is almost expected to be a one and done.

People dogging a player on the possibility that he might fulfill his dreams and bolt for the NBA by saying he hasn't done anything to warrant the hype, draft stock, etc. makes for a nice, convenient, disingenuous disguise. Why not just say "I'd really love it if my favorite player would come back to school because I really like watching him play and he makes my team better."

I misused two terms, both in quotations. I guess you can say I was being a passive-aggressive grammar nazi. Though nobody used the term "defiantly" (misused in place of "definitely"), I threw that in because I see it all the time. Next to the misuse of the word "dominate" (misused in place of "dominant"), I felt it wouldn't be too out of place.

I don't get why people think he's going to the NBA based on what Spike said. He's not going to mention McGary being back at all since that would give it away that he's coming back. Therefore he omits Mitch from any mention for next year leading people to believe he's leaving when really that's the only thing Spike could say.

I was confident that McGary would come back, but now I'm worried he will leave. If he does leave, my optimism will be gone. We can't possibly absorb this many losses and expect to remain an elite team in the short term.

of course itd be a loss but theres worse things in the world than program sending multiple kids to the draft every year...especially 3 potential first rounders from the same recruiting class...for many recruits it rings louder and longer than winning a title since most ultimately want to ball for a living.  usually very positive sign for a program to have to consistently replace first rounders...be great if football eventually had to deal with replacing numerous legit early entrants every year since most champions usually have several pros on each side of the ball

last year. Our offense couldn't possibly be better after losing POY Burke and Hardawy, and yet it was. And losing McGary on top of that, we should have had no chance in the Big Ten, but we won it by three full games. And yes, it may be that after everything shakes out, we're not quite as good next year as we were thist year. It's not like that's the end of the world. You can't be better than last year EVERY year...some years you're going to regress. Even without McGary, this is likely still a tournament team. We'll have a strong backcourt and some very promising players elsewhere.

he might come out but then again he might not and if he does then we'll play mark donnal at the five and drop someone else into the four but then again maybe donnal will play the four he's a good shooter you know and bulked up since last year and has been playing well in practice but the person i think is getting forgotten is max bielfeldt because he played quality minutes sometimes and boy it's too bad horford left we really could have used him next year i guess his girlfriend and it's okay because beilein is really great and he can really develop talent i wonder if we'll need a big man caris is a good wing player who can get to the rim and maybe we don't want a big guy clogging the middle and sparty has big guys izzo is whiney anyway mcgary is good i like his attitude we'll need someone who plays aggressively and besides if he stays he'll improve his draft stock the draft isn't as deep next year but lots of money either way and maybe he's just ready to go but maybe not and he might not want to be the last of the big three left but maybe he wants to make his own legacy.

i think that covers it.  but then again, maybe not.  someone should start another thread to talk it over.
