This will be the repository for hot takes regarding the offense and offensive playcalling.

Agree about the long balls, but IMO the play calling was poor overall. didn't look like we called a play with crossing routes until the 2nd half and we didn't ride Corum enough early. The trick play to Bell was extra stupid and there were more than a few times a called QB run would've gained big yards.

You might be, but the guys calling the plays may not be. I’m not against JJ running, I think he needs to to keep defenses honest. It’s also possible that Cade is out longer than any of us know, but the coaches know, so that’s weighing into their decision. This place would go up in flames if JJ got hurt on a run & it turned out that Cade was out for extended time/rest of the year…

He needs ~5 called runs (or zone reads) or so a game to keep the defense honest.

But also, especially if the defense is going to rush 3 and drop 8, he needs to have a much quicker timer in his head that goes from “look for open receiver” to “take off running in the best available lane”. That to me was a thing Taulia is much better at - take the 5-10 yard scramble instead of hero ball and a sack. Especially on early downs, that’s the play, and it will help open everything else up.

Not calling a play “with crossing routes” is a generic take.  Much of that depends on what the defense is doing.  Also, very hard to see without an all 22 view.
I am more connected about the old JH pattern of run, run, 3rd & 7 pass, punt.  Would love to see us throw about ten more times a game.  I think it makes our run game even better, and keeps us much closer to 50/50 run/pass.  If we are balanced, this offense could be deadly.

I agree we had a balanced offense, i disagree that the play calling was fine. The deep balls were all reasonably covered and contested, because Maryland was selling out against the deep ball, while giving up the middle, for free, all game. We had an almost guaranteed 10 yards per attempt sitting there, but we kept calling deep instead. The crossing routes worked great all game, the deep shots not so much, and I'm not putting that on JJ. Maryland ran the offense we should have this game, we had better talent.

Granted, I didn’t pay much attention to the route combinations on those plays. But it’s pretty rare for coaches to simply call deep throws. Any well designed pass play is going to have some sort of short-intermediate option alongside the deep throw.

Without actually seeing the routes ran on those plays and how they were covered, I’m not going to put blame on JJ’s reads. And those deep throws were all routes the WR had a good advantage on, he simply didn’t hit them. But I’m pretty skeptical that the coaches were calling deep throws and that’s the reason the easy yardage wasn’t being taken.

JJ has been money on the deep balls for pretty much his whole career at Michigan.  Unfortunately that was not the case today for whatever reason.  And I don't mind the coaches calling the multiple deep shots even though he was missing.  Our WRs had a step or two on their guy so the play was there to be had, JJ just missed.  Keep doing it, IMO.

My main issue with JJ today was holding onto the ball too damn long on passing downs.  Pockets were unbelievably clean.  And by the time I counted to 4 or 5 seconds I expected JJ to take off running and get chunks of yards.  There were screamingly wide open lanes in front of him a bunch of times.

I think JJ was overly amped for this game and the overthrows sort of prove that.  I think he will settle in as the year goes on.  I just hope we don't absorb a loss as he gets comfortable.

I hope he got the overthrows out of his system today, before we go to Iowa City next week. I still maintain that the biggest reason we lost there in 2016 was Speight overthrowing multiple, wide-open receivers deep. Hit a couple of those and we win that game by two TDs.

Long story short, Iowa's defense doesn't give up a lot of opportunities, so the quickest way to let them hang around with a chance to win late is to not take advantage of the opportunities that do arise...

Plus a missed fg. And the fumble was in fg territory. The offense just wasn’t sharp. The playcalling was solid enough. JJ hit the last long ball after realizing he wasn’t putting enough air under it. It will get fixed. Dude is a serious talent. Those guys just get better with experience.

Agree. I’d argue the offense was “good” today, with the caveat that they struggled to find a good rhythm at times. It seemed a bit clonky but it was efficient.

At the end of the day, they averaged 7 yards per play. JJ completed 70% of his passes for 220 yards and a pair of TDs on 8.5 YPA. Corum ran for the most yards in a single game since Timmy B and another pair of TDs. The OL did a good job opening holes in the run game and did pretty well giving JJ time in the pocket.

You’d obviously like a little more cohesion and sharpness, but it’s hard to be upset about the output.

The Gash play was insane. I did not like the double pass. I did not like that it felt often forecasted our intent to run allowing them to sell out and putting us in third and long.

It felt when they spread out the defense and run a balanced attack (third drive of the second half) it was easy. Hopefully they learn a lot self scouting this week.

Everyone not named Blake Corum looked like complete and utter ass today (including the OCs). Not even marginally encouraging as we move into conference play.

Anytime Maryland was caught in man, there were guys running a yard open. JJ missed what, 4 bombs where the WR had at least a step. Maryland ran a ton of zone and that was met with poor route combos. I don't have all 22, but there were clips online showing 4 WRs in vertical routes against essentially cover 4 type set ups. That won't get anyone open.

Also, the no read zone reads are back. I've been saying it for years, but it's clearly a coaching decision. Otherwise neither Shea, Milton, Cade, nor JJ can make them at that's almost impossible. Telling your QB to give every time for whatever reason is idiotic if you're going to have a mesh point. There were backside bubbles and slants/curls wide open and JJ gave to Corum running into boxes with guys not even thinking about JJ pulling. It's just dumb to build an offense out of that motion and then just cut 1/2 of it off randomly.

JJ wasn't great, but he hits one or two more deep balls and the game feels different. Those will hit.

The play calling will determine how far the offense goes though. Parts of this game felt 2019 Army bad.

Do I think that trying something in a game in a low pressure situation to get experience, put something on tape, and give an opportunity to coach and practice during the week might make a difference in subsequent games? Meaning do I think if he overthrew multiple receivers against UConn last week he might have done better today?

Um… Yes. Yes I do.

Pretty much everyone here blames coaching for almost everything… and yet it seems far too few understand it.

Nice try.

They struggled with something on offense today that didn’t get a lot of work the first 3 games of the season, despite having opportunity to do so. Some of us think there’s a connection.

When it was pointed out last week, we got to read, “wE wON 59-0 aNd you’RE biTchInG?!”

As for coaching, I was paid to do it for a pretty decent chunk of my adult life. But maybe if I’d perused the comments here more, I’d have been better at it.

So again, you think they only get to work on things in games and they don’t get to work on them in practice? You think 2-3 deep balls against UConn is the difference and not the dozen times he does it every day in practice?

Come on now. If you were really paid to coach like you claim, you wouldn’t be this dense.

bamf_16

September 25th, 2022 at 12:39 PM ^

Maybe that’s why I never coached at the FBS level like I’d dreamt of doing.

I’m so dense I think you can work on things and learn from them during games too. We used to do things in games to further develop our players and team. I should have realized you can learn in practice too.

“So again, you think they only get to work on things in games and they don’t get to work on them in practice?”

Exactly. I used to cancel practices once the games started. We only worked on things during games. Wait. Is that wrong?

False choices and the ad hominem. You’re a special kind of guy… The Michigan Difference!

Corum obviously carried the offense today. Love to see it and obviously the O-line had a helping hand.

I loved that this game happened. We needed to get punched in the mouth. Despite what some of the whiny ass babies on here post, you aren’t going to bring your A game week in and week out and McCarthy needed to have a tough outing. That’s how you grow. And next week should be another tough growing experience. And that’s good. He’s not going to miss on nearly every deep shot most weeks. But I loved how he was still money on all the underneath stuff despite that.

How huge was Schoonmaker’s development late last year now? He’s going to be a huge part of the offense with no All. And Bredeson looks like he’ll have a chance to contribute and develop.

Our OCs really need to grow from this as well. At least 2-3 of our possessions were hindered by unforced poor play calling. But just like JJ, learn from it and grow.

Let’s go baby. 4-0.

yeah next week will be another tough test.  get a better look at how cohesive the OL is with 3 new starters and TEs with limited experience.  they have talent up front and all corum needs is a crack - can they grind yards when needed vs tough, well coached D.  mccarthy certainly has all the tools, well see if he also has the head as he progresses.

iowa O doesnt have the horses so the D should get another week to try to find some answers.  how do they handle obvious lack of natural pass rushers moving forward and can the LBs develop
