This is the goddamn fifth reponse I've tried to type out before being censored. Is this one staying? My fingers hurt.

Sorry Herm.

Thank you for apologizing. We know the mainstream media won't. Instead they'll just run with this new story and hope that no one notices their utter incompetence.
You know that old saying, "If you can't do... teach."
It needs to be changed, "If you can't do... join a branch of the failing mainstream media whose idiocy knows no bounds and irrelevance approaches faster by the day."

I suspect that there will be any number of serious journalists - be they "MSM" or not - who will give this more than a cursory look.

January 16th, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
I think the TL;DR version is this - Manti Te'o's girlfriend is/was a leprechaun who pretended to be a pretty girl.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:32 PM ^
Meanwhile - I appreciate the hard work that the mods do. At the same time, half the reason the mainstream media covers stuff today is because it comes out via alternative sources of media, including blogs which provide room for discussion and debate of all kinds of themes. So granted, there's a need for balance and we don't want the blog getting junked up. At same time, as a Michigan grad, I am really proud of the atmosphere open to dissent and debate, carried out by intelligent people, that I experienced during my time on campus and I would hope that this blog would encourage and promote that same atmosphere.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:39 PM ^
I agree. The discussions are outstanding on all issues. I was initially afraid that the train would leave the station only to find out that the bridge was out, for lack of a better description. I'm glad you all called me out and that ND issued such a quick statement that we could get on with the discussion. Just trying to protect the MGoBrand, not squash discussion. Thanks again to everyone for calling me out but being fairly kind about it.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:42 PM ^
Quick hook based on the nature of the sole source; quickly returned when ND fessed up. Well-played, in my view.
January 16th, 2013 at 7:41 PM ^
why does the 'mgobrand' seem to rely on censorship over speculation? I understand some stuff (such as Ace Williams) because there is no positive outcome, but other times I fear you guys overly sensitive/downright draconic when it comes to the converations on the message boards.

From Notre Dame spokesperson Dennis Brown:
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te'o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.
So, there's that. Let the Leprechaun tears start flowing.

Was it an imaginary friend?
January 16th, 2013 at 5:53 PM ^
Most likely Te's is still lying and ND is trying to cover him. This is a bad idea, as every reporter that previously reported about this story has an incentive now to dig for the truth.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:44 PM ^
It's too early to make a solid decision on this. All I know is like the Catholic Church, ND will cover their ass and throw whomever they need under the bus to make this go away. Remember the rape and suicide? No one else does. If this is true, it's beyond whack.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:52 PM ^
of the rape-suicide case, including a really good piece that sportswriter Dave Zirin published on the day of the BCS Championship Game. I posted that and it was immediately deleted. On one hand, Zirin is a great writer who covers stuff that a lot of sportswriters shy away from in the name of avoiding controversy (I guess) or because of their own narrow definition of what "sports" means and what it does not. I figured at the time of its fast removal from the blog, the mods sought to save me from a quick trip to Bolivia. Given that it was game day, for some (especially folks going for ND in that game) it would probably be interpreted as akin to the neighbor's dog coming into your house and shitting in the living room.
January 16th, 2013 at 7:04 PM ^
Please keep your inflamatory comments about the Catholic Church to yourself.
January 16th, 2013 at 8:28 PM ^
If we're talking about lies and coverups, the Teo weirdness has nothing on that whole global child rape thing. As the Pope said (in a Denzel voice), "Sandusky ain't got nothing on me!"
January 16th, 2013 at 8:58 PM ^
no need to bring anything the Catholic church has or hasn't done into this, it's completely irrelevant.
January 16th, 2013 at 9:04 PM ^
Didn't bring it up, merely commented on a previous mention. That said, ND is a Catholic school and this is a super strange story that possibly involves lies and/or coverup by the school. Coverups, then, seem consistent. That said, any chance to highlight how a global organization facilitated child rape gets a green light in my book.
January 16th, 2013 at 9:13 PM ^
and yours happened to be the last. Either way, unless someone wants to post a credible report linking the Te'o girlfriend scandal with the awful things that went on in other institutions, there's not a need to bring the scandals Catholicism has had surrounding it onto the blog. It's the same as the politics rule, and is enforced for the same reason.
January 16th, 2013 at 9:00 PM ^
I'm not interested in a debate or conversation of any type on the topic. I believe the rules of this site prohibit discussion of Religion and Politics. His cheap shot at Catholics was uncalled for and doesn't belong here.
January 16th, 2013 at 9:07 PM ^
I hear what you're saying, and generally agree, but comments about the recent misdeeds of the Church aren't about politics or religion. Catholicism (regardless of the actions of the Church) doesn't condone child rape.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:50 PM ^
for the Craig James connection to this story. That is about the only thing that could make it more weird.

Te'o issued a statement Tuesday afternoon:
"This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.
"To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.
"It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.
"I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.
"In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.
"Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."
Interesting that both ND and Teo were press-ready with statements, and that neither Teo nor ND came forward with news of the deception until after the NC game and after Deadspin came out with all the facts.
My guess is that there is more reporting to be done on this one.
January 16th, 2013 at 6:15 PM ^
2) Te'o actually got faked into believing he was dating a girl that did not exist. (Not so likely). If this is the case, Te'o is extremely dumb and ND can never make the argument that they have higher admission standards than everyone else for football players.

Teo's statement still doesn't explain the supposed meetings, among other things. With all he has to lose, why come out with this now when it was supposedly known before the 26th? He was making statements about his GF before the NCG.
ND posters are guessing it's an attempt to cover up something in his personal life, ala Rock Hudson. Clearly just baseless speculation, but it makes as much sense as anything else.

Absolutely disgusting. "Speaks with her on the phone." "Meets her multiple times in Hawaii and in California." Blatant liar.
ESPN appears to be defending him. Not investigating it at all. Just giving Te'o's statements and Notre Dame's.
I hope this guy never lives this down.

Infamy is a stain that does not ever come clean. I wouldn't draft this guy or allow him in camp tryouts. It will be interesting and a statement about which organization picks him up from this hole he's dug for himself.

Wow, if the allegations are true, that is one massive effort in part by Manti and his friend. Only AJ McCarron may one up this if it turns out his girlfriend is a hologram.
