Vegas fucking rules. And I don't just mean in the "lets hit up the casinos and strip clubs" kind of way. But the weather and the scenery and the hiking and the golf. Vegas has some of the best entertainment and the best restaurants in the world. Vegas might not be for everyone, but it's got a whole lot for a whole lot of people. It's hard to not like Vegas. EDIT: this also ignores Lake Tahoe, which is one of the most all-around fun places in the country. Hating Nevada is just weird, man.

I didn't say I preferred anything in Nevada to CA, there was no comparison in my post. The golf is far better in NV, that I will say. Lots of nice parts of Tahoe are in NV - Incline Village may be the nicest part of all of Lake Tahoe. And you think the restaurants in CA are lackluster? Compared to where? Outside of maybe NYC you aren't getting better food in the US, and even that's debatable based on what kind of food you're into. You think LA and SF are lackluster food cities? Maybe I need to know where you're going.

I'm not going to argue with you that Nevada has better hiking than CA, but half those places you listed are farther from me than Vegas is anyway. Are you not happy with the soy sauce that is served on the west coast? I've never heard this as a complaint, to be honest. But I don't like to overuse soy sauce if it's good sushi anyway. You may be nit picking here - I feel like every sushi place I go to uses the same brand of soy sauce.

Well are we talking about Vegas, or Nevada as a whole? I'm just bored at work and messing with you, anyway.

I'll admit I do live near the 909 slums, but I've tried quite a few sushi places here and there and every time the soy sauce and wasabi taste like nothing. A good wasabi should burn your nostrils off, and I haven't found anything close to that yet. Very surprising, considering the large Japanese population around here.

On another note, can you recommend a good sandwich shop around here? Having Jersey Mike's and Subways on every corner isn't exactly cutting it...

My territory ends at the 605, so I'm quite unfamiliar with the food east of there. But LA has maybe the best sushi outside of Japan, so depending on where you're at, I can usually give some good recommendations. If you're near a Katsu-ya, try it. A little over priced, but quite good. I like a place in Burbank called Octopus that used to be my sushi go-to before kids. What kind of sandwich places do you like? There is a deli in LA called Langer's and it's the best deli I've ever been to, Zingerman's included. Again, I know that's a bit of a hike from you, but the 909 isn't exactly hopping for food. From you, your best food bet is Pasadena. Not too far from you, but tons of great food. Yelp some sushi in Pasadena and if you're still unsatisfied, I won't be able to help you.

Depends on which beaches. LA beaches - great food. OC beaches - pretty hit and miss. OC is much more bland and lily white in general, so your food options, while equally expensive, tend to be less adventurous. Get in touch when you're thinking about moving and I'll give you some pointers. I've lived and/or worked in much of LA so I've got a pretty solid pulse on the area. Maybe we'll meet up for sushi.

at least as far as Sushi is concerned.....there is a lot of mediocre here, but the good stuff is exquisite, though certainly pricey in most cases.

By the same token, I don't have a problem with NV the state, but LV the city I abhor.

I hate gambling, weak drinks and not that I partake, but hookers aren't legal....or even desireable from what I have seen slithering around casinos there.

The food in LV, while way better than it used to be, still isn't what i would call great, but if you are coming from Des Moines, it probably seems that way.

Aside from the various Cirque du Soleil shows, the entertainment is mostly what I would categorize as a $200 puppet or magic show that someone has spent 15-20 years honing into something that is somewhat funny or marginally amazing. Meh.

I don't golf, so I'm no help there.

Hiking I's have to drop for the CA on that also, coastal pines, mountains, deserts and everything in between isn superior to endless scrubby desert and low mountains, though I would call them about even for mountainbiking.

Again, this was never a NV vs CA argument, and I agree with you that CA wins that battle 10 times out of 10. It's also a but of a cop out to say you abhor Vegas only to then say that the best few things about it aren't things you're into anyway. You're wrong about the entertainment there - they bring in many of the best acts, musician, comedic, other there in large quantities. It has the best musicals in the US outside of Broadway. Then you wanted to go all SF vs LA, which is lame. Especially when it comes to Japanese food. Both cities do that so well, you're never going to have a winner. If you think SF does any type of Asian food noticeably better than LA you're just being biased.

I'm from Maine and this is pretty surprising to be honest.

Maine is quite similar to northern Michigan, particularly the UP.

Highlights of living in Maine include: Ice Fishing, snowmobiling for hundreds of miles along frozen chains of lakes, hockey, hunting, lumber, lobster, and blueberries.

Note that football is not included on this list.

For what it's worth, UMaine beat Staee in a hockey tournament earlier this season.

Maine - Mostly bitterness from University of Maine graduates who can't refer to their school as "The U of M" without confusion.

Nevada - anger from gamblers due to Michigan's frequenctly unpredictable performance against the spread.

I grew up in Nevada, not near Vegas(yes there's a difference) and never encountered much of an issue with Michigan hate, in fact I hear quite a few "Go Blues" when I walk around in my hometown with the M ballcap on.  If anything you're likely to see either Boise St. or BYU take the most hated school crown there.  Wasn't there an issue with a Buckeye fan spamming this poll a while back and Michigan being HUGELY over-represented in the poll and then it came back to earth with a correction? I would guess Nevada's and Maine's low populations kept them as leftover's to the process.

Either that or there are a lot of Buckeye's and Sparty's working as dealers in Vegas.  Anything is possible.

On reflection, there is one other possibilityt, Nevada had a large hispanic population, which means lots of Catholics, which means lots of Notre Dame fans.  Could explain Michigan's national reach as a disliked school.
