Why is it strange?

He has/had a more serious injury than they led the public to believe because they're trying to protect his draft stock. I guess you also have the benefit of game planning for the opposing team (where they don't know if he will/won't play). Then there's also the Harbaugh "it's none of your business" side of things as well.

After the way Harbaugh handled injuries this year...I don't see how this is strange.

Hell, Jabrill Peppers was more weird than this one...

We are in the hunt for a title, but in order for that to happen we will need Caris to come back and play 100%.

Even if Caris were 100 percent healed and ready to go, there has been considerable discussion about how he will be used in a lineup that is achieving some very good team chemistry. How he is used is going to take some serious juggling of the lineup to not disturb the gains that have been achieved since he was hurt December 30.

I think the chemistry issue is real, but you don't keep a first round NBA draft pick player on the bench so as not to disrupt "team chemistry." I think Beilein will manage the situation very well. I think he is one of the 5 or 6 best tactical coaches in the game... JMHO

Yeah, it's a tough situation. No doubt, the chemistry issue is real, but you have to try to get around it.

This needs to be Walton's team. I don't know if that can be done with Caris in the lineup. But that's what Beilein gets paid for; I bet he'll be able to do it.

At the beginning of the season, I would have give a huge edge, a ">>>" if you will, to Costello and Schilling over Doyle and Donnal. Now? I might give a slight edge to Donnal and Doyle. I watched both recent M games yesterday (Rutgers and PSU) and Doyle was playing better. Maybe that's because of the opposition, or maybe he is coming out of his funk. The next couple games will tell.

Shilling barely plays and is mostly terrible anyway.  Deyonta Davis is their "other" big and he's having a very good freshman season. He will present some matchup problems and it'll be interesting to see what we do when both he and Costello are on the floor (which happens often). Irvin will have to guard one of them or we'll have to play more Chatman or Wilson or Wagner at the four - all three of whom scare me.

I'd say Donnal is much better but Doyle is still a butterfingers... Costello/Schilling combo is still better. However, if we hit 3s at a high % against any team, we will be in the game.

With Nairn out, who is the penetrator that scares you? Forbes and Harris and McQuaid are mostly spot up guys that can be guarded unless we have to leave them to help down low or we let Valentine drive on us.

If you are correct that they aren't that strong down low, then we wouldn't have to worry about helping the post, but I think you're wrong about that. Costello isn't great and can probably be kept in check by Donnal but then who guards Davis? Irvin is probably too short and Robinson - yikes - that'd be a nightmare.  If Donnal checks Davis, that's probably adavantage MSU still and frees up Costello to use his size against Robinson or Irvin.

The challenge is going to be how we guard the MSU frontcournt of Davis, Valentine and Costello. Irvin can only take one of them, preferably Valentine.  I think the best hopes are that Robinson is enough of a mismatch for Davis or Costello on our end of the floor that it makes up for the mismatch on their end, or that Wilson or Chatman or one of the other bigs can step up enough defensively to be able to live without Robinson on the floor.

MSU guards are only a concern if we can't match up with the MSU frontcourt (including Valentine as a point forward). And even if they have Nairn, Walton will be able to play 10 feet off him so penetration there shouldn't be a big concern either.

Big week vs IU and MSU  - this week makes or breaks out chances at the title. Win both and we are sticking out neck out ahead of the pack. Split and we are in the thick of it. Losing both will probably kill our chances.

Levert has been out all of January and Michigan has already beat Maryland without him. It would be great to have Levert but this team is capable of winning the conference without him.

Well, in fairness, Derrick Walton isn't even averaging 32 mpg this year.  Sure, much more during B10 play, but that can be said for just about every team's star players.  In the Big 10:

Tre Demps, NW, 36.6

Nigel Hayes, UW, 36.1

Bronson Koenig, UW, 35.4

Bryant McIntosh, NW, 35.2

Kendrick Nunn, ILL, 35.1

Malcolm Hill, ILL, 34.7

Shep Garner, PSU, 34.5

Yogi Ferrell, IU, 34.0

Marc Loving, OSU, 33.4

Rasheed Sulaimon, MD, 32.5

Nate Mason, MINN, 32.5

Caris LeVert, 32.4

Corey Sanders, RU, 32.4

Brandon Taylor, PSU, 32.1

Zack Showalter, UW, 32.0

Derrick Walton, 31.8

Denzel Valentine, MSU, 31.8

Melo Trimble, MD, 31.6

Zack Irvin, Mich, 31.2

Joey King, MINN, 31.0

Keita Bates-Diop, OSU, 30.6

Shavon Shields, NEB, 30.3

Jarrod Uthoff, IOWA, 30.0

Obviously, I'm talking about how much he's had to play since LeVert went down.  His minutes in December - which lower his season average - are irrelevant to the discussion.

Anyway, your list shows only five B1G players averaging over 35 mpg, and they're playing for mediocre teams - NW, Illinois and Wisconsin.  Elite teams are able to give their guys more rest.

TrueBlue2003

with Caris and Spike out, Walton basically hasn't sat down.  Playing THE MOST minutes in B1G ten play - 91.4%.  That is not ideal.  I'm a little surprised we haven't seen more Rahkman - Dawkins - Irvin - Robinson to give Walton a couple more minutes off. I guess Beilien isn't comfortable with Dawkins and Irvin as our 2nd/3rd ballhandlers.

I know you're talking since Caris went down.  I went with the most easily available stats and the caveat that we can probably expect most players MPG during conference season to be significantly higher than their MPG during non-conference.

In conference, Walton is averaging 36.6 mpg.

A good comparison is probably Yogi Ferrell.  He's averaging 36 mpg in conference.

I'm not claiming it wouldn't be nice to get him more rest.  But, in the age of "4 minute periods" (in between TV timeouts), I don't know if an extra two minutes per game really is going to have any significant cumulative effect.

Another example, in his last six, Denzel Valentine is averaging 35.3.

Melo Trimble is averaging 32.8 in conference, with a 15 min game in a blowout.

Jarrod Uthoff, 32.9.

You get the picture.  Yes, Walton has the most, but he's not the only one withing a minute or two of 35.  Hell, Buddy HIeld is averaging almost 36 with the 3OT game removed (if you include that he's averaging 37.8.  If you include that game but take out his OT minutes, he's averaging 36.2.  In conference.

I'd call Oklahoma an Elite team.  Hield is still playing practically every minute.

Yeah but with Caris back we could slide him to the three, with a MAAR and Walton backcourt and give Robinson a break, or use him to give Irvin a break. Then we could use Kam and DJ less, which would be a plus, since whenever one of them comes in we don't score. It's not just depth, but also having the best players on the floor.

The first half of our Big Ten schedule was far, far easier than the second half will be.  We played probably four games in the first half that were easier on paper than any of the games we play in the second half.  Even if LeVert were back 100% healthy tomorrow, there's no way we go 7-2 in the second half, and even if we did, 14-4 is not likely to win the conference.  We just don't have the level of talent that the upper tier teams do.
