Lovie Smith out at Illinois
December 13th, 2020 at 1:08 PM ^
When you have been banking a few million a year for the last few years, it isn’t too tough to lose your job any year. When you are making $50,000 and supporting a family, it sucks to lose your job any year.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:17 PM ^
I 100% agree Wolverine73.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:21 PM ^
Damn, I was secretly pulling for him. Good luck wherever you land next Lovie! He’s one of those dudes that I just can’t help but like and feel a little bit bad for even when his record sucked and his firing is warranted.
Plenty of good, likeable people get fired from jobs they do poorly at.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:33 PM ^
friend has a son on the team and speaks highly of lovie. sorry he decided to leave, wish him well on his next gig.
maybe he can take his beard on a speaking tour?
December 13th, 2020 at 12:23 PM ^
Speaking of teams in the west, Michigan supposedly will play Iowa in the crossover game. Which makes zero sense since you would assume Indiana would get them. Indiana and Purdue might play for their crossover game if they can make it happen.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:26 PM ^
Why on earth are they even bothering to play meaningless crossover games during a raging pandemic? It’s pretty clear even most of the players are done this year. Why risk anymore infections for a lowly consolation game?
December 13th, 2020 at 12:55 PM ^
Pandemic is over. Vaccine shipped today from Gretchen’s state.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:04 PM ^
If it’s over, please tell my father in the ICU to quit his bitching.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:30 PM ^
Just beyond dumb. Team has obviously checked out. If Purdue and Indiana and Wisconsin and Minnesota actually want to play their trophy games let them, but no reason for Michigan to play. Tell the Big ten to pound sand.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:48 PM ^
Why is Michigan v. Nebraska not in the mix?
December 13th, 2020 at 12:27 PM ^
We will always have that amazing comeback win they had over MSU last season.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:21 PM ^
And beating Wisconsin the week after nearly beating Michigan. Giving up 25 straight points or however many it was, super annoying.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:30 PM ^
Pete Thamel's initial search list:
- Army HC Jeff Monken
- Buffalo HC Lance Leipold
- Former Wisconsin HC Bret Bielema
- Kent State HC Sean Lewis
- Iowa State OC Tom Manning
- Ball State HC Mike Neu
- Wisconsin DC Jim Leonhard
- Cincinnati DC Marcus Freeman
I vote Freeman and get him to hire as many OSU assistants as possible, especially Brian Hartline as OC. Leipold or Monken is probably the best choice however.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:37 PM ^
Have a bad feeling Leipold is going to end up in the Big Ten and beat us.
Not to mention his current MAC team would be favored if they played today.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:03 PM ^
Monken? Seriously?
I know Michigan prides itself on living in the past, but hiring him and bringing his triple option here would literally send this team back to the 1940s.
Oh well, at least we’d be incredibly annoying to everyone we played.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:26 PM ^
He is talking about the list of candidates for Illinois. Probably a good list for them.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:33 PM ^
User name, double entendre, checking out
December 13th, 2020 at 12:30 PM ^
Kevin Sumlin and Lovie Smith fired/not given extension.
Tom Herman and Jim Harbaugh stay on.
This is a bad, bad look for college football.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:37 PM ^
Are you insinuating that this is about something other than wins and losses? What evidence do you have? This is an ugly look if that is what you are doing without evidence.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:44 PM ^
I am saying that this is going to become a controversy. Journos are going to see two black head coaches getting fired when there are already so few of them and two white coaches keeping their jobs. Obviously each school and coach have unique situations to where making it a literal black and white issue is challenging,
But I am almost certain that this is going to become a controversy if Harbaugh stays.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:52 PM ^
I think it is a good look that coaches are hired and fired strictly on their merits and accomplishments, regardless of their skin color. No need to create controversy where there should not be. Let’s honor MLK and not bring race in when it is simply not a factor in these decisions.
And, for the record, it only became a controversy on this board when you brought it up.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:00 PM ^
It isn’t a controversy. I am saying that it will become one. I am almost positive that this will happen. You can like it or dislike it, I don’t give a fuck. Getting your undies in a bundle because you don’t like someone saying what they think is going to happen based on how people have reacted in the past is silly.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:53 PM ^
Salvatore, dude you are becoming the "Drew Sharp" of this board. Seems like you are the constant Devil's advocate and confrontational for the sake of being confrontational. Give it a rest man.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:57 PM ^
Theytookourjobs, you are the Mike Valenti of this board. Seems like you enjoy saying confrontational things. Kindly go fuck yourself.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:58 PM ^
BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Thanks for making my point for me.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:01 PM ^
BWhahahah, thank you for being you, Mikey.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:58 PM ^
I am as liberal as they come and this never crossed my mind. Summon was 9-20. I think we have to move on from Harbaugh, but you can’t really compare him to Sumlin.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:02 PM ^
That isn’t going to stop people from suggesting that racism is involved.
December 13th, 2020 at 1:10 PM ^
It certainly didn’t stop you from the suggestion.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:41 PM ^
I wonder how much of this is Illinois being unhappy with the results and how much is Lovie saying, “Screw it. You can’t win here.”
December 13th, 2020 at 12:46 PM ^
If Michigan keeps Harbaugh in this landscape, they will most-likely double or triple the time it takes to get back to being competitive.
Harbaugh's shelf life at Michigan has expired. Even if he replaces both coordinators and most coaches, recruiting has no strategy or plan and Jay Harbaugh needs to go too. How can JH. Convince top coordinators to come here with his recent history?
December 13th, 2020 at 2:05 PM ^
While I am all aboard the fire Harbaugh train, the past 20 years or so have shown that no major P5 school is more than 3-4 years from being competitive in the BCS/playoff hunt if they make a good hire.
December 13th, 2020 at 12:46 PM ^
Lovie lovin that Lions job opening
December 13th, 2020 at 12:51 PM ^
FIRE HARBAUGH!
December 13th, 2020 at 1:06 PM ^
NOOOOOOOO
December 13th, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
Lovie to the Bears!
December 13th, 2020 at 2:02 PM ^
Thought head coaches were exempt from firing this covid year....hmmmm.... Jim Harbaugh come on down!!!
December 13th, 2020 at 2:10 PM ^
And don’t forget that COVID has only hurt Michigan this year and no other school had to deal with COVID and all the adjustments that came with it.
December 13th, 2020 at 2:41 PM ^
It’s common knowledge that, had it not been for COVID, Joe Milton would have thrown for 5000 yards and the UM defense would have been the second coming of the Steel Curtain as they rolled to a 15-0 record including a 75-3 thrashing of Ohio State.
December 13th, 2020 at 3:04 PM ^
2020 already sucked, and now Santa is gone
December 13th, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
Underrated comment.
December 13th, 2020 at 10:49 PM ^
I have to think this is Lance Leipold's new job. Which is too bad. He would be a perfect fit at Iowa.
