Elko was a DC there, so he presumeably knows the culture and all that. No one has to explain to him what "Gig 'em" means, or why it's of vital importance that he pluck some random student out of the stands to play on special teams.

I do think it's an admission both of the lack of star power of available choices and the fact that A&M might not be all that. OTOH, ADs making a sane, solid hire and actually hiring someone who can build their programs. . . few and far between. If you're a thoughtful A&M fan, you hope it's that. . . and that the crazy portion of the fan base doesn't bring Elko down before he has a real chance to succeed.
I live in Tallahassee, and I can tell you that there were quite a few people locally who laughed when they hired Jimbo. Best thing that had happened to FSU in quite a long time. He was maybe the last of a certain breed of outsized countrified posers left in the sport. People were so tired of his schtick.

It wasn't too many years ago that the notion of Texas A&M pursuing a Duke HC would have sounded ridiculous.
Duke has had exactly one season with 10 wins or more—2013 when they went 10-4 under David Cutcliffe.
