A look at Sherrone Moore's resume

Submitted by Dennis on January 11th, 2023 at 12:23 PM

It sounds like Harbaugh will likely be staying with Michigan, but I wanted to examine Sherrone Moore's resume to see if there are any nuggets that might project success in an HC role.

Here's a quick look at his stops before Michigsn in 2018:

2012 Louisville as TEs coach under Charlie Strong, went 11-2

2013 Louisville as TEs coach under Strong, went 12-1

An article on the TE group from that era gives Moore high praise, coaching up two transfers to become an historically high-performing unit.

2014 CMU as TEs under Dan Enos, went 7-6

2015 CMU retained as TEs by John Bonamego, went 7-5

2016 CMU as TEs under Bonamego, went 6-7

2017 CMU promoted to AHC/RC/TEs, went 8-5 and coached up Tyler Conklin who was one of the few NFL draftees from CMU who have had a lasting career not named Antonio Brown. Conklin was drafted in the fifth round by the Vikings and currently plays for the Jets.

2018 UM as TEs under Harbaugh, went 10-3. Coached McKeon and Zach Gentry. Gentry was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 draft by the Steelers and still plays for them.

2019 UM as TEs, went 9-4. Sean McKeon and Eubanks were heavily featured, IIRC.

2020 haahahhahaahhaaha

2021 UM promoted to co-OC/OL, went 12-2, B1G champs. Erick All whooped PSUs ass. We beat OSUs ass. We ran over everyone including trampling OSU - thanks Hassan. Playoff berth. Wins Joe Moore award.

2022 UM as co-OC/OL, went 13-1, B1G champs. Erick All got hurt early on but both Schoonmaker and Colston Loveland are actual human animals. Our OL mauls everyone again. Corum nearly or outright wins the most boring Heisman-year ever without his knee bruise late against Illinois. Edwards runs through the largest holes ever opened in the Shoe, Loveland catch good, and we bitch slap the Suckeyes B2B. Playoff berth. Wins Joe Moore award again - should pry be called the Sherrone Moore award. Pry has another Jake Butt in Colston Loveland.

So... there's no debate - Sherrone Moore is an excellent coach. Every position he coaches becomes a highlight on the team in multi-year fashion, so he isn't flukey.

Key questions remain, does this translate to the HC position? If Harbaugh leaves for the NFL, would you want to take a risk for Moore's youth and OL/recruiting continuity?

I'm not an expert or football wonk at all, so the closest comparable I could find to Moore's trajectory is actually OSUs 2017-2022 OC, Kevin Wilson. His success at OSU speaks for itself, shadowed only by his abject failure at HCing Indiana from 2011-2016, where he cracked 4 conference wins just once, yikes. Let's see how Wilson does at Tulsa, but it doesn't seem like there's any correlation between your position background and HC success, so I'm not sure this comparable is helpful at all.

What do y'all think?

I'd be happy with Sherrone Moore taking the reigns. Happier still if it happens after a few more years of Harbaugh at the helm.

I understand the argument about inexperience as HC, or "hierarchy" where you absolutely must go coach in the MAC for 3-4 years to prove yourself before getting any consideration at all for a big school. But, I don't necessarily agree with that philosophy.

If you're the AD and you feel like Sherrone Moore can run an organization, and the rest of the package is plus-plus, then you seriously consider it. There's also an arrangement where you can prop up a new HC with respect to some of the administrative tasks by placing some experienced assistants around him.

Have to ask yourself, is there more risk in Moore than hiring a retread coach with a lower ceiling just because he's done it before? Or do you take a gamble on a higher ceiling candidate that would require some mentoring? Hard to say, but in Moore's case I'd make that bet.

For a job of this magnitude I believe you need an experienced head coach. This isn't a knock on Moore but being a coordinator v Ceo is a huge leap. Some make it others don't. We would be in a position to get the best available or poach the best from another school.

First - I like Sherrone Moore.  He is a fantastic coach and obviously delivered on the OL.

That being said, there’s a difference between a position coach / coordinator and head coach.  And, the head coach position changes a bit, or a lot, depending on the conference and team.

Michigan is not an easy place to coach - a dynamic relationship exists between the Athletic Department and Academic side of the university - and, there are a number of influential alumni too.

Should - or when - a transition will take place, I hope that Harbaugh has groomed multiple candidates who could succeed him.

Out of curiosity, if anyone doesn't like a Sherrone Moore hire, what realistic candidate from outside the program would you prefer? There aren't any.

I'll take him way over Matt Campbell or some approximation of him. Hire someone from the outside, get yourself a bunch of attrition from the current staff, change the system, have a disappointing 2023 in which the fan base screams for the new guy to be fired... Can't wait.

I love hiring Sherrone Moore as the head coach. He's an excellent coach. He's proven himself in every way a guy can prove himself and I don't need to see him coach in the MAC first to know that.

I know it works sometimes, but hiring new coordinators and long time position coaches as a head coach gives me a pit in my stomach, although I’m sure he would keep the squad together. All this being said, Jim is staying at Michigan. I hate that have this convo every year.

I know Carr was a coordinator, but he was a deeply trusted and long tenured one.

The fact we’re looking at Sherrone Moore’s resume is a good indication Michigan should fire Warde and put his ass on the first available flight to Bolivia. You can believe NIL is icky, but it is malpractice for an AD in the year 2022 to kneecap the efforts of our alumni and boosters to do something that is clearly within the rules before engaging Harbaugh in a game of contractual chicken.

he is not excellent at all. Any non-Michigan hiring authority reading this should know that we put up with so much about him, his attitude, his many, many off field issues, and worst of all his offensive body odor. No other team should take him.

Also, if you are a non-Michigan hiring authority flush with cash, I have some prime real estate called the Quadrangle in Washtenaw county I can sell you.

He may have to be a HC at a smaller program for a few years. Be very successful and take over for Harbaugh in 10 years as our coach for a long 20 year run.
