Lions draft - anyone happy with it?

Submitted by Blue in Paradise on
I am not impressed. Davis in the first round seems solid but Tabor is going to get torched deep by NFL #2 receivers and the rest of the draft was boring. Kaaya in the 6th could be a good value pick - he was projected to be one of the top QBs in the class before the season, Overall - I am not excited about this group. Seems like they added some rotational depth and that's it.

I'm ok with it. Kind of feels like a Patriots-ish draft. A couple of head scratchers for the fan base that could end up being great picks. Quinn/Lions just haven't built up the same type of equity the Patriots have. Time will tell.

To this draft. Quinn is former neighbor here in Walpole Foxboro area and Patriots fans love and respect the guy and actively root for his efforts in Detroit!

As a native of Detroit, but NEVER a Lions fan--I actually am rooting for them for the first time because I have confidence in how Quinn is thinking about all the moving pieces. Good Job!

I trust Quinn's judgement of players infinitly more than all these arm chair GMs. I will say that I will give the draft right now a D on the sole basis that they didn't pick a running back. They spent a lot of resources on building a good line, and this was one if the most loaded rb drafts ever. Abdullah is made of glass and fumble prone, Zenner should be a backup, and Riddick is not a full time back.

I'm fine with the idea that they need a running back, but I don't necessarily think the draft is the way to go. Stocked class this year, true, but when you get down to lower round guys it's just as easy to sign someone who is available as to draft a guy who can be productive. The running game has been disappointing for years but Detroit is going to be a Stafford Spread team for a while yet. They've already got a guy in Riddick who can handle the slash back work. Finding a thumper for short yardage won't be that hard. In fact, Deveon Smith might be a good UFA pickup to give that role a spin.

Would like to see them make a move for Blount. Seems like he wants more money than teams are willing to pay him right now and NE looks to have moved on bringing in Burkhead and Gillislee. He's a short/positive yard guy with a very low fumble rate and given our draft and OLine he looks like a good fit. Read that the Giants are interested in him.

It was one of our quieter super bowls. I felt Cleveland's super bowl was better. Now it's on to the drudgery of disappointing both fan bases for 363 days until our super bowl returns ...

There is no reason for Michigan fans to be Lions fans. If you look at their draft choices, the Lions have no love for Michigan players. I think Jackssonville and MIami have drafted more Michigan players than the Lions have. On the other hand, given the Lions track record, I am not sure that I want Michigan players playing for the Lions.

Being loyal to a local university when it comes to drafting players is not a smart strategy to take. If they are good enough, available, and fill a need, they should be taken. It would be dumb to reach for a player just because he played in the same proximity as an NFL team.

I follow the draft closely, like an obsessive hobby. I had my eyes on several of the guys we took. There's plenty to like about the draft we just had. Last years draft wasn't terribly sexy either and we ended up with several guys that look like they are going to be real solid pros. Look, I get the Lions pessimism. I do, and Ive hated their guts many times at the end of seasons (including this last one), but what am I gonna do? Huh? Throw on a Patriots hat and call myself a fan? What kind of fan is that? How would I even enjoy their success after 25 years of Lions emotional meatdowns? It would be cheap. Nope. I'm sticking this thing out, come hell or high water. At the end of the day it's just football and Detroit and Michigan is who I love. However if I die, the very first thing I'm saying to god is "honored and humbled to be here, but seriously? One playoff win? Just one?"

Not worried about it either. 40 times are a bit overrated and I'm pretty sure some of the best veteran players aren't faster now than when they were 20 or 21 and at the combine. You're right though. They should not have passed on Butt.

I love Tabor's ball skills and I'm hoping our zone scheme will hide his lack of speed. We need a RB that can move the crowd, I don't know if Washington or Zenner are the answers. Our fragile, 5 foot RBs aren't the answer.

I'm getting on "The Green Machine's" bandwagon. I was looking at the available RBs in the 7th round talking to a friend and going by weight. the biggest left were Clement (issues), DaVeon, doesn't impress and Tion Green 230# from Cincinnati. Never saw him play. Just reading the pre draft stuff it said Big frame, tough runner. Yep, Get it done Quinn. 7th round- O'Connor - a GD Huron DE?! Then he redeemed himself by signing him as an UDFA. Green has a skill set Abdullah, Riddick, Zenner or Washington do not possess, the ability to run over people. Zenner is tough though. Check it: http://youtu.be/Yn62eV22JDs From the draft profile: SOURCES TELL US "I like him better than some of the backs who were invited to the combine. I'm surprised he didn't get an invite with his size. He's got a chance to make it if he can show something on (special) teams in camp." - AFC national scout http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/tion-green?id=2558717

winning the draft each year was always overrated

offense -

a tall WR to be the #3 to replace Boldin

TE that can maybe replace Ebron after 2017

the OL was addressed in free agency

RB depth the only thing not addressed

defense -

LB's to fill up the depth there

CB's to go with Slay - 40 time isn't the sole determinant of a CB

need more pass rushers still

I was hoping that they would get Roberts TE Toledo. And he was there in the 4th rd which was about right. A big run blocker that can catch. No way they re-up Ebron, who is good for about 1 decent play a game. Added good depth to LB group. That was the biggest need. The DE is a bit of a concern. Scouts see Ledbetter as not fast enough on the edge. He's 280 but not strong enough at this level for a tackle. Maybe O'Connor can contribute, hopefully not out of necessity due to injuries. The WR from NIU is intriguing, clearly Quinn and staff are high on him. Many "expert" were not and saw that pick as a reach. But if you believe Roberts will play a big part of the passing game then someone has to open things up. Golladay has the speed and height to play outside and he'll have time to develop with established WRs ahead of him. I like the CB to compliment Slay, can't have enough cover guys. Seems to be the group that suffers from injury. Good value with the 6th rd QB, Kaaya. Many had him rated the 6th or 7th best QB and several lower rated QBs were drafted rounds ahead (3-5). Never can have enough competition and depth at backup QB. He will get a good year on the practice squad and hopefully we won't have to draft a QB for a few years I was hoping the Lions would take the Cinci RB in the 7th round. Turns out we got him anyways as an UDFA. 230# of straight ahead power running, no trying to make guys miss. Something we haven't had since probably Cory Schlesinger.

"We had a solid draft this year" sounds the same as when I hear somebody say "I really feel like this year is going to be different." Heard it for 32 years now.

I guess I don't fully understand the logic of drafting Davis over Foster if you're also going to take Tabor. I don't think anyone disagrees with the fact that Foster is a better LB prospect than Davis is. I understand if your philosophy is 'were staying away from questionable character issues and off field red flags'. But then you go and take Tabor who is a head case himself and turned a lot of teams off during the interview process.

There are actually plenty of people who think Davis is the better prospect. Most think Foster has a higher ceiling but Davis is more reliable. They didn't take Davis because he had better character in my opinion. They took him because he is more likely to be a starting NFL linebacker for the next decade than Foster is. Foster could end up being a star. But he could also be a bust. Two other teams that were known to covet Davis had the chance for Foster and didnt take him either so more than just Quinn think it is the right move.

Glad to see Quinn addressing some needs. I like that they added two corners and LBs to the roster. I really like the Davis and Tabor picks. Disappointed in them not taking Butt or a RB, but I trust Quinn's roster management. What really suprised me is that they waited until the sixth to get a D lineman. After getting run over by Thomas Rawls and getting zero pressure on Wilson in the playoffs I figured it would be a top priority. To be honest I would've been completely fine with them drafting all defense. There were a lot of ways they could've gone just due to the fact that their roster has so many holes. Overall not too bad I guess.

The UM wolverines had the best defense in division 1 football, and the Lions had one of the worst defenses in the NFL. The Lions decided that NO UM player was good enough to play for them. This is a big reason why the Lions will never be in a super bowl. They do not know talented players in their own back yard. I will never understand Micheal Roberts TE over Jake Butt TE. I am going on record that Jake Butt will have a better career then Roberts.

Hopelessness. That's the one overriding feeling of being a Lions fan.... I can only imagine, but the only things worse would be to be a Browns or a Jaguars fan...this draft, last years draft, the draft before that, none of that changes anything.

They probably had too many holes to fill, but not addressing the RBs or DL will come back to haunt them. Ameer will be hurt by week 3 and they will get no pressure on the QB.

I'm a fan of taking the best player available. The Lions have so many needs that this could have easily been the approach. I think they "reached" on most of their picks.
