Liklihood of top college coaches leaving current jobs

Submitted by Cranky Dave on

I haven't seen the linked article posted elsewhere on the board.  The author looks at 29 of the top college coaches and the liklihood of leaving current jobs after this season.  Several mentions of Michigan and Florida specifically.  Interesting to compare this assessment to those of people on this board, like Ron Utah, who've posted CC diaries.

Agreed on both.  Stoops is interesting in that he has been recruiting Ohio very well.  He is also likely to bring his staff with him.  We all know how important that can be.

I don't know that Mullen or Miles would be able to keep their staffs intact in a move up north to Ann Arbor.  The both Harbaughs would have to pretty much build staffs from scratch.

I'm convinced Mullen is going to cash his chips and go elsewhere. You can't win longterm at MSU. It's the saddest program in the SEC minus Vandy. They are the Purdue of the SEC. He's going to get paid a lot of money to go elsewhere - whether that's college or the NFL

I'm actually surprised Dantonio is not being talked up for either the Florida job or an NFL job.  I am not saying that from the persective I wish he was gone so UM can win etc.  But he has the personality that would not run NFL players the wrong way like Harbaugh does and he plays systems that translate to the NFL.  While there is always a risk hiring a college coach the NFL is full of retreads as well.  It does sound like he is a lifer there but if Chip Kelly is getting some NFL "love" it is strange Dantonio gets none.

As for Florida,  if the strife between the AD and Mullen is real there is no real candidate out there for them - not sure Dantonio fits culturally but if you want a top 10 coach he seems like a guy you'd reach out for.

Will be interesting to see if UF takes a chance with RichRod.  Again if Mullen is not going there, there is really no obvious candidate in America for UF.  Maybe they go for Todd Graham;  I think he'd kill it at Florida.  Petrino is someone I had not thought about - wonder if UF would look past his off the field stuff.  He is a pretty darn coach when you look only at football.

If somehow Bob Stoops decided to leave Oklahoma for a conference he has publicly thrown punches at, it would be interesting if Oklahoma goes for his brother Mark from UK.

Of course it would be a net positive but the comment was inn terms of pro style (which very few NCAA teams run), demeanor, and accomplishments.  He is not an outward scolder yeller like a Kelly or Harbaugh or heck Saban so NFL guys would be able to deal with him better than those types.  But he is getting up in age now and he will have shrines built for him at MSU for what he has done both for the program as a whole and for how he has become the new Tressel v UM, so I dont see him leaving.  You just would have though someone across the nation would have kicked his tires at some point.  Especially considering he was paid $2M per until this year.

I can say the same for Bob Stoops actually, aside from the fact his offense is not as pro ready as Dantonio's is.  And Oklahoma is a destination job unlike MSU.  But his demeanor and accomplishments fit the NFL.

I want Dantonio to stay there so we can beat him, and he can suffer the pain of losing to someone that he truely hates, for winning because he left for another job is kind of like winnng by default. I am still hoping for Jim Harbaugh so he can beat Dantonio AND MEYER, then give them a good slap on the back as they are leaving the field. They would both cry.

My best case scenario, just from a sports should be fun perspective, is Harbaugh, Dantonio, and Meyer all here at the same time.  I think all of those programs would be good, they'd all be entertaining in their own ways, and the coaches would be at each others' throats.

Three supremely hard-assed coaches all in the same conference and in the same division.

The forced smiles and the paper-thin cordiality before games would be great to watch.

Plus, the football would ratchet up a notch or two as all three of them would go into hyper-competitive mode and seek to do nothing other than beat the crap out of the others.

Great stuff.  Bring it on.

Those three plus Franklin.  It would be an annual contest to see who could be the biggest douche to the other programs.

"What's your deal?!!"  "No, what's your deal?!!"  "No, what's your deal?!!"  "No, what's your deal?!!"

Big Ten Media Days would be a hoot.  Whoo Hoo!!

There is one scenario in which I could see Rich Rod at Florida.  Michigan hires Arizona AD Greg Byrne.  Byrne hires Dan Mullen as their previous history makes Mullen much more receptive to Michigan than before.  Rich Rod remembers the bullshit that happened to him under a new AD at Michigan and leaves AZ for Florida.

Everybody wins except AZ.

What I took away from that is that obviously this was an intense and thorough study of possible flight risks in the college coaching world, but also deeply personal and painfully awkward in some ways. After all, how else would the author know about the condition of Helfrich's banana?

I will put away my inner 12 year old now...

Colorado State isn't a terrible place in the college football hierarchy.  The 2000s were a lost decade for CSU but they were consistently good in the 1990s and there's no reason they can't annually be at the top of the Mountain West Conference.

But it's also an "upward mobility"-type of job too ...... kind of crazy CSU was able to make him agree to a $7.1MM buy-out (?!?!?!)

Aside from the talk of all of the coaches, what I liked about this article is that despite the negativity that we as die hard fans feel, the Michigan job is still considered to be a top job, right up there with Florida, from a national perspective.  Refreshing to hear.

From this list, I would be really happy with either Mullen or Miles.  Obviously, I would prefer either of the Har-bros, but if we miss out there, then Mullen or Miles would be awesome.

to get a top tier coach to come here.  Fire DB already!  I still have Jim H no. 1 and Gary Patterson No. 2 with Mullen a close third.

If DB goes, it'll be a race.  If he doesn't, it will be a Halloween on 33* night in a downpour...Nobody's knocking on that door.

Also, I'd love to see RR at Florida.  He cdould do some real damage to Saban's reign down there.

Probably the blood is too bad down there to retain him on the staff (like Fickell at OSU) but RR offense with a Muschamp defense would make for an interesting team.

The more I think about Todd Graham the more he makes a lot of sense for Florida.  They won't get so pissy as our fans do about him leaving previous stops in uncool fashion.  They are more bottom line oriented and Graham just wins bottom line.  He is a good ole southern boy from Texas to boot so culturally would fit even better than RR.

I'm not really sure RichRod would be cut out for the SEC. I could be dead wrong, but he seems to still not want to play defense. But then again, beating Oregon two years in a row is saying something.

Either way, I don't think he's going anywhere. After Michigan, he might not want to be in a place with insanely high expectations anymore. He's carved out a pretty good niche at Arizona. Its a fanbase that accepts him, and they honestly can't expect a whole lot from him, at least not like they would at a place like Michigan, Florida, USC or Texas. I doubt he wants to go through that kind of fiasco all over again.
