Leadership (and a shout out to Red Berenson)

Submitted by fredsaysbtdabks on

All,

I was reading a leadership article and there was a good shout out to Red Berenson.  Here is the quote (in the context of leadership)

I remember a conversation I had with the legendary University of Michigan hockey coach, Red Berenson. He said that if he raised his voice with a freshman, he might cost the kid his confidence. On the other hand, if he didn't raise Cain occasionally with a senior, that player might lose his concentration. It's a matter of picking your spots and acting appropriately.

The "incident" that most cite when arguing against RR's demeanor is his "treatment" of Forcier at the end of the Iowa game.  To some, at the time, the arguments appeared justified.  However, in retrospect, we can now see these factors:

1.  The stadium was loud; RR had to yell to be heard.

2.  Forcier appartenty answered his questions with non-sequiturs.

3.  When RR took him out of the game, it turned out to be the correct move because Forcier had a concussion.

When things get better, both this year and next, RR's first senior class at UM will be one of his favorites, and they will revere him much as Bo's old players revere him.  Or at least, as much as any coach can be revered in this day and age.

Sadly, coaches like Bo get fired nowadays, but there is still room for instilling discipline in any football program.  RR is tough, but that is fine.  When the desired results start to happen, it will be seen as a positive.  Besides, if he gets too tough, Brandon will be there to suggest that he alter his style slightly.

The only thing "dubious" that I see in RR's demeanor is the straw man that his critics have made.

student or athlete situation is a case seperate to themselves.

I have coached and been an educator and the situations are not similar.

Coaching and educating is part gut-instinct and part what you have been raised to know and believe.

We have to believe in our coach and what he communicates because if we do not the antagonists rule. I believe in our coach at this point and we need to believe in him at this point, no matter if his name is Rich, Lloyd or Bo.
