Lacrosse Coaching Legend Dave Pietramala leaves B1G Rival Johns Hopkins

Submitted by twotrueblue on April 14th, 2020 at 4:10 PM

Pietramala was at the end of a 5-year extension, but hadn't gotten the Blue Jays to the final four since 2015. Now, the coaching legend who won two national titles (2005 and 2007) and went to seven final fours is no longer the head man at Johns Hopkins.

Early rumors of course are that Towson's Shawn Nadelen, a JHU alum, will be offered the job. Nadelen happened to be a senior during Pietramala's first season as the head coach at JHU. The last time Nadelen was rumored to leave Towson was during Michigan's coaching search three years ago after Nadelen had brought Towson to the final four that spring.

We'll see if this benefits JHU in the long run or not. It seemed like the program became kind of like mid-2000's Michigan Football - mediocre success despite a championship winning coaching staff.

What you say might be true, however JHU is supposed to be premier program of college lacrosse and they haven't been to the Final Four in five years. That's kinda like Nick Saban not being able to bring Alabama to the CFP for five years straight. I believe Pietramala was on his way out (he started 2-4 this year before the pandemic). But yes, it does seem to give them some kind of "excuse" to make it seem more amiable.

Warde should fire Conry and bring him in.  Super aggressive move and only should be done if it’s a guarantee we get him.

I disagree - I wasn't a big fan of Petro and I think he's been getting lazy the last several years. He was regarded as one of the best coaches in the game back in the day but his teams have underachieved recently. And that's despite a high recruiting and academic profile, a strong alumni and fan base and tons of university support. And, generally, I just think he's kind of a dick. I'm not sure he would necessarily translate to immediate success here. Plus he's friends with Bellichick booooooo.

(Disclaimer: I've known Conry for 30+ years so I'm definitely on Team Conry. Interestingly, he considers Petro a major mentor and influence in his life and career).

No, WD.

Writing has been on the wall for Petro for a few years now. No one is surprised by this. Towards the end he was just getting by on recruiting off his and JHU's name and not getting results. His tactics are not as up to date with the modern lacrosse game as a lot of coaches out there that would potentially be out there if UM moved on from Conry. This would be a bad making a splash for making a splash's sake move.

Ooh this is interesting. Is he going somewhere else or is he just hanging it up? Petro has been really mailing it in the last few years and results have shown on the field. They've had some mediocre seasons and made the tournament a few times when they absolutley should not have.

The comparison to early-mid 2000s Michigan football is...apt. But Michigan just sort of underachieved whereas JHU has gotten complacent and a little apathetic.

I bet he hangs it up. Like you said, results havent been there for a while, writings been on the wall this move would be made eventually. He's got a couple of sons that are pretty decent that'll be in college in a couple years that I could see him wanting to spend time with and watch play. That, and I honestly just can't see him somewhere else
