Kirk Herbstreit comment on GameDay

Submitted by FireJimDelaneyNow on

I heard Kirk Herbstreit, refer to the University of Michigan as the "wolves" on GameDay last weekend.  For the life of me I have never referred or heard anyone refer to the wolverines as the "wolves."  I know this guy is a egomaniac, but has anyone ever heard the wolverines referred to as "wolves"?

Herbie is just trying to do, what Rich Rod could not  --

to get the 'woof, woof' back at the Dawg Pound, back at the Wolverine house, the Big House.*

*Random ESPN idiot circa 2009.

What leads you to believe he is an egomaniac and if he did say "wolves" how does that have anything to do with that? He's one of the nicest guys in college football and pretty damned humble considering his place in that world. He's also one of the best broadcasters and most knowledgable guys in the business. Who the hell cares what he called us unless it was a bunch of assholes?

hes called us "wolves" many times...I do not believe there is any disrespect intent...Its no different than the announcers who say the Fighting Bob Stoops etc etc

eh it's not precise but I don't take it as trolling or an insult.  As far at Buckeye media lackys go, Herbstreit is probably the most tolerable (or close with Spielman). He is a generally a good analyst and fair in his assessments and doesn't overtly troll on the air.

I like Herbie and Spielman. I think they are two of the better football guys at ESPN. As stated above, the fact that so many OSU fans hate Herbie for actually being professional and not being a homer makes him more likable.

Many within our own fan base wouldn't have known not to say "Big Blue" if it wasn't for others in our fan base telling them that was an no-no. So I just accept it as words coming from someone not truly within our fan base who's trying to give us good acknowledgement. The guys on the Inside College Football show were constantly calling us "Big Blue" while talking about us. It has a nice ring to it, so people are going to say it. Though it's usually referring to Kentucky.

Egomaniac? I'm not sure why you think that. I always liked him and even though he's a buckeye, is good at not being too biased. Even Morgan is way more biased than he is.

Not sure what egomaniac has to do with anything, but I've always perceived Herbie to be non-biased.  I am a fan of him as an announcer as well.  He probably just misspoke.

I actually remember Bo Schembechler calling the team "the wolves--" once on Michigan replay.  Only time I ever heard him do that and I remember it for that reason.  Seems like it was in the context of an undefeated Big Ten team losing the weekend before Michigan played them and he said something like,"Well, maybe they were looking forward to playing the wolves..."
