Can’t say I’m surprised. He can’t like having his OC/son fired.
November 19th, 2023 at 3:46 AM ^
Yes, but why announce today instead of after the season?
The only (only!) explanation is he is in his feelings after he finally got to see a team score two safeties in one game and it wasn’t his.
November 19th, 2023 at 7:23 AM ^
You posted this at 3:46 AM - you really think anyone posted an announcement at that time? Read the OP - his (her?) Iowa fan friends are texting him about the rumor they hear.
I don't doubt it at all, honestly, and do think we'll see something about it today. He's taken so much heat this year - and the last several years - about his son and his offense. I mean, his teams are actually competitive in games against really good opponents - look at his record! It's also time, he's been there forever... Announce it now and get the farewell game out of his players in the B1G CG.

A.A.C. was just making a little joke.
November 19th, 2023 at 8:02 AM ^
Hmmm... I see it now. Thank you for the explanation, I'll have another cup of coffee now...

Because they are getting Urban Meyer!!

Has a former punter ever been a head coach? Now's their chance!
November 19th, 2023 at 7:27 AM ^
Tom Landry was a punter and DB, also a WWII veteran, who became an innovative NFL coach.
November 19th, 2023 at 8:10 AM ^
Pat McAfee was a West Virginia alum, not Iowa.
November 19th, 2023 at 9:01 AM ^
My HS coach was a kicker, and a pretty good football mind. We never kicked FG's though. We just ran the ball. My favorite quote from him, when we were getting a little unruly waiting for film study, "men, let's go so we can get going!".
November 19th, 2023 at 1:05 AM ^
He certainly deserves the time off.
November 19th, 2023 at 7:14 AM ^
So do the Iowa fans.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:08 AM ^
Wow, but he has been there a long time and he probably doesn't want to be told whom to hire as OC.
With no divisions, programs like Iowa will hardly ever sniff a B1G CG unless they have a 2015 type season.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:16 AM ^
Or if they happen to hit the schedule lottery. You basically play half the conference every year (9/17).
November 19th, 2023 at 5:47 AM ^
Iowa would have the best chance to hit the schedule lottery as they are the only team to have THREE permanent protected games: Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska. And unless Nebraska recaptures its glory years, none of those programs are in the top third of the expanded Big Ten.
November 19th, 2023 at 9:02 AM ^
Those aren't exactly historical doormats. I'd rather have Rutgers, Indiana and NW.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:09 AM ^
Ryan Day might be available soon.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:09 AM ^
Saw that coming. Heard it when his kid was tossed out.
November 19th, 2023 at 11:40 AM ^
The Nepotism plan got dismantled when Brian got tossed. No longer will Kirk be able to retire and have Brian take his place. That would have been the worst plan in current college football. I hope the new coach if it's true, is able to retain Norm Parker for some time. That is the key for Iowa to stay relevant.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:14 AM ^
That'll make James Franklin the longest tenured coach in the B1G followed by Harbaugh
November 19th, 2023 at 9:03 AM ^
Tuck Comin
November 19th, 2023 at 1:16 AM ^
End of an era. I wonder what it will be like to worry about Iowa scoring points…
November 19th, 2023 at 1:16 AM ^
I wonder about the possible effect on a B10 title game.vs UM. How motivated will that iowa ream be? I remember a similarly retiring Coach Carr and the way that UM against Florida and uncle Urban
November 19th, 2023 at 1:18 AM ^
I thought briefly about that, but that team had more offensive talent in its collective big toes than the current Iowa team has. And if deJean’s injury is as serious as it sounds, that’s a huge blow for them on both defense and special teams, aka the two ways they’d have to score to pull an upset.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:19 AM ^
Secondly, they need to, you know, have an offense to be threatening. What, they try harder and crack 20?
November 19th, 2023 at 5:49 AM ^
I guess, but did you watch any of that Illinois-Iowa game yesterday? I don't see how that team beats Michigan or OSU unless either team throws the game away. Weather will not be a factor as well so hard to find any other intangible to level the playing field.
Their best chance is OSU & Michigan beat each other up, and the winning team loses key personnel to injury.
November 19th, 2023 at 8:09 AM ^
Henne and Hart were completely banged up towards the end of the season. They both sat out against Wisconsin to rest their injuries (and Henne sat out against Minnesota) but they were still in awful shape against OSU. They were back to 100% for the bowl game against Florida. That certainly helped out.
November 19th, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
If there is a team in B1G that can match what Iowa can do, that is UM. Just watch the punt yesterday and two safety. And UM can do other things as well. So, not worried.
November 19th, 2023 at 9:04 AM ^
Fortunately, we only have to beat another 11-0 team to get there, so it's pretty much a done deal.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:25 AM ^
I thought he might go for the all time record in Big 10 wins. Oh well
November 19th, 2023 at 1:31 AM ^
Lincoln Riley is going to back a Brink's truck up to Phil Parker's house.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:43 AM ^
He will end up hiring a DC from the Big 12 instead. Lol
November 19th, 2023 at 1:42 AM ^
They should hire Matt Campbell!
November 19th, 2023 at 8:31 AM ^
That State isn’t going after Matt Campbell is so weird to me 🤷♂️
November 19th, 2023 at 1:51 AM ^
That makes... *checks notes*... Frames Janklin the longest-tenured coach in the B1G.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:53 AM ^
He just passed Bo for 3rd most Big Ten wins.
November 19th, 2023 at 5:58 AM ^
I seem to remember Haden Frye saying he didn't think he should pass Schembechler and Hayes in number of wins, when explaining why he was retiring.
November 19th, 2023 at 1:54 AM ^
Wonder if Bob Stoops would consider getting back in the game for his alma mater
November 19th, 2023 at 1:57 AM ^
Would be a great story - and he would be great for maybe taking them up another level before dipping, but Stoops is done with college I think.
November 19th, 2023 at 7:38 AM ^
That's an interesting point. His name is in the top 2 of "lol, no fucking chance" for all coach's searches over the past 20 years (other being Gruden), but this would be the one situation where it actually seems plausible. UMx, I think you are the first internetter to ever reasonably connect Bob Stoops to a potential job opening. (Tips cap)
November 19th, 2023 at 11:07 AM ^
Bert’s alma mater also
November 25th, 2023 at 2:08 PM ^
They'd have to back up a dump truck to get him to Iowa City
November 19th, 2023 at 1:58 AM ^
Good timing for him to go out on a winning note. The days of the 4th (or worse) best team playing in the conference championship game are over after this year.
He can get creamed in the Big 10 championship game and maybe win the mediocre bowl game the Hawkeyes get invited to one last time.
November 19th, 2023 at 5:12 AM ^
are you finally out of the hospital? things better, hopefully?
November 19th, 2023 at 6:19 AM ^
Thanks for asking.
Btw I posted a comment about my condition in the Hoekstra family thread you created. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's pinned to the top of the forum and relates to a gofundme for a family struggling with medical costs. I encourage you to help out if you can.
I was close to being released but developed sepsis, so that set me back. I am now being transported to and from the hospital for radiation treatment, so I finally have that restarted. My last treatment is Tuesday, then I should be released: to home if I'm strong enough, to a rehab facility if I'm not.
November 19th, 2023 at 6:57 AM ^
praying for you to get home to enjoy a thanksgiving meal with your family, and a stomping of ohio two days later!
keep the faith and go blue!
November 19th, 2023 at 3:44 AM ^
One of the best developmental programs in the country. He kept it going for a long time. He had many chances to leave for the NFL and stayed.
November 19th, 2023 at 5:05 AM ^
The real concern is how to retain the DC and Special Team coaches!
November 19th, 2023 at 5:23 AM ^
I mean Phil Parker has to be the option right?
November 19th, 2023 at 7:05 AM ^
My Iowa fan buddy says Lavar Woods if/when, but he’s also certain Kirk stays for at least one more year
