Kinda OT: looks like UGa has actively recruited the portal to solve its QB issue
Lots of smoke suggesting Newman (QB from Wake) is almost a done deal. They've been talking to him about it for a couple of weeks, since he entered the portal. Good work by Kirby to backfill. UGa goes from Fromm pushing out Easton and then Fields, and then Fromm leaving too with zilch behind him (full on crisis mode) ... to certainly one of the most dynamic 5th year QBs in the country at the helm for them next season.
I hope we are similarly effective in using the portal to address DT depth.

Because people like to think that people leaving the program to the transfer portal or us mining the transfer portal to backfill talent gaps is only a Michigan problem.
Think about OSU. What if they didn't mine the transfer portal for Fields and was left with Martell. OSU would've been a 2 (maybe 3) loss team this year.

Shit, you’re right. I just remembered Burrow outplaying the QB in the spring (which was Haskins) and then transferring after the spring. The same thing happened this year with Fields, but it was Baldwin who outplayed him (minus two picks)

Because Fields will get hurt next season, Georgia will have a terrible season then some assbag at UGA is going to call Newman a poopyhead. Get immediate eligibility transferring to osu before the last game of the year then proceed to win their next game for them.

I've been reading this blog since day 1 (the good old days of the blog comments being focused on recruiting guys like Rojo and Nick Perry).
This blog prided itself of NOT being like MLive. However, that's what it's turning into, now! Stop being douchebags or posting comments that contribute nothing valuable to the community.
You clearly cared or you wouldn't have entered the thread. You would have just ignored it. Instead, you click on an OT post (clearly marked), that has a title that clearly explains the content of the thread. Then, just post a comment that is nothing but a douchebag comment.

they do have a couple mid / high 4 stars in d'wan mathis and a pro-style kid in this coming class whose name i can't remember. they must not be feeling confident in the young QB room they have despite the history of having started fromm as a true frosh.
goes to show that even recruiting powerhouses in talent hotbeds sometimes have issues managing personnel. $omething tell$ me they'll be fine.

Kirby allowed Fields to walk and stuck with Fromm. Fromm led a mediocre offense where as Fields became a dynamic player. Fields still has 1 more year and Fromm is gone. Now UGA is stuck picking through the portal

Fair point, but O$U has a progressive offensive system in place that capitalizes on Fields's strengths, whereas UGA still uses a more traditional offense. Failure to adapt to their positional talents might be the bigger failing on UGA's part.

Also what strange recounting of the events — Kirby hardly “let” Fields walk. He was playing him a bunch as an underprepared true freshman just to keep him happy. Fields as a true freshman looked nothing like Fields as a sophomore. Fields invented a creative way to pull up his tent stakes and land in an open spot that fit his skills hand-in-glove. Fields forced his way out of there ... hardly Kirby “letting him walk.”

Yes, I believe KJ Costello at Stanford is in the portal. I'm not sure if he's the only one though as I know about him due to UM's rumored potential interest. But, I was also speaking to the track record of the portal versus a current snapshot. Some others in recent years were Easton, Fields, & Hunter Johnson to name a few. I think highly ranked QBs tend to be less willing to wait their turn than other position players.
