Kevin Hogan (Potential 5th year QB transfer, Stanford)

Submitted by SAMgO on

QB Kevin Hogan just finished his fourth year at Stanford leading the Cardinal to a rout of Maryland, and he is rumored to be considering a fifth year transfer. He was recruited by Harbaugh but has played his entire career for David Shaw. Would people be interested in seeing him brought in for one year at UM? He could immediately shore up the questions at QB and give Malzone a year to progess and compete for the 2016 job. Definitely seems like something at least worth exploring for JH.

He'd still have a chance in 2015 too.  If he's the best, he'll be on the field.

For those who think Hogan would show up and take the job from Shane, I'd say that's a reason to welcome him aboard, if interested.  If there's good competition between the two, all the better!

Not really though...most of his yardage that game came from screens and short passes. He was inaccurate on most of his downfield throws that game, just like he was in high school and just like he has been at Michigan so far. The guy clearly has a gun but you really need to be accurate to have any level of success at all in college.

It wasn't the QB's; it was the system.  Opponents knew where the recievers were before the QB's even had a time to make reads.  I am giving every QB that played in 2014 a free pass because they all deserve it.  I am glad we have seen the last of having the Worst AD in the History of Michigan Football sitting in on "film" sessions and telling coordinators how to do their jobs.

That being said, a fifth-year QB who has experience in a system that is probably a hybrid of Harbaugh and Shaw would be a very nice resource.

I get the dislike and disdain from some of Dave Brandon's decisions, but it seems like a stretch to blame QB development on the AD.  Is there any evidence at all that he was "telling coordinators how to do their jobs"?

that there is no direct evidence of "telling coordinators how to do their jobs", there isn't much doubt in my mind that, at very least, the fact Brandon was regularly present would have made things more than a little uncomfortable.

Do you think that DB just sat there in total silence, not interjecting his own form of "wisdom" when he saw fit?

It's your story, you tell it.

When challenged, you concede Brandon had nothing to do with player development, and then use wiggle words to imply he did, after all.

What exactly are you claiming was his role?

You actually fucking believe David Brandon called the plays or had an inout? Our OC was awful last year (worse than Borges) and it had nothing to do with Brandon. Youve obviously never played college football otherwise you wouldnt make such ridiculous comments. Thank Christ for Harbaugh

Personally, I think giving Morris the RS year he so desperately needed one of the last two years would be giving him a great chance for his future. He gets a year to absorb a system before he would have to run it. He'd have two years of eligibility left if he beats out Speight, Malzone and DeWeaver. We'd have more balance in our Qb scholarship distribution. And if he doesn't win the job, he'd still be able to do a 5th year transfer to another school himself.

Seems like a great idea to me, but wouldn't he have to find a graduate program here that is unavailable at Stanford?  I don't remember exactly how the transfer/5th year thing works.  It would definitely shore things up short term.

Yes, but this seems like its something that's easily worked around. A lot of graduate programs have sub-specialties that aren't often offered at other schools or different names for similar programs. I can't recall this particular thing ever being a problem.

Stanford's postgraduate population is slightly more than half of Michigan's. Rackham offers degrees in 155 areas of study, Stanford claims 90. Even without a workaround, I doubt it would be anything to worry about if you're talking about taking a grad transfer from a private school.

I wouldn't mind this option at all. He's already been running an offense that will be similar to what Harbaugh is looking to install and even if he doesn't win the quarterback competition he would at the very least push Shane Morris to realize his potential.

I wasn't that familiar with him, but caught most of that bowl game last night.  He looked pretty good.

The announcers were talking about his options during the game and their belief seemed to be that Hogan would greatly benefit from one more year in college.

I think it would be a great lift for our program if he could come in, already familiar with Harbaugh's offense, and lead our team for a year.  It would give Speight and Morris a year to catch their breath after what has had to be an incredibly dizzying season/offseason for them.

Interesting to consider. The article definitely makes it seem like the system at Stanford is part of his dissatisfaction - in which case Harbaugh may not be much of a change from Shaw.  That said, it seems like a viable option, even though it would be a sign that JH doesn't have much faith in Morris.

I'm more interested in seeing Shane Morris and Wilton Speight progress. Hogan would be fine, and would be in a similar situation where he is protected by a running game that should be very productive with that offensive line, Ty Issac in the fold, and the possibility of Drake Johnson returning to form. I think we have 3 and 4 years left with Morris and Speight respectively, and I wouldn't mind having some certainty going forward at that position for the first time in a while.
