Kevin Hogan (Potential 5th year QB transfer, Stanford)

Submitted by SAMgO on

QB Kevin Hogan just finished his fourth year at Stanford leading the Cardinal to a rout of Maryland, and he is rumored to be considering a fifth year transfer. He was recruited by Harbaugh but has played his entire career for David Shaw. Would people be interested in seeing him brought in for one year at UM? He could immediately shore up the questions at QB and give Malzone a year to progess and compete for the 2016 job. Definitely seems like something at least worth exploring for JH.

..he is erratic but had his share of coordinator turnover and did QB an 11 win SEC team 2 years ago. Mobile for a big guy and perhaps Harbaugh can polish up his rough edges a bit.

Chuckie Keeton from Utah State has 'edge of internet' rumors to be looking around too. Good dual threat guy.

Avoiding 3rd and 9 makes any QB look better.

If not, JH will get Shane or Wilton ready for a good 2015 and great 2016.

I just wish DG had his years under JH. I really think that dude could have absolutely kicked a lot of asses, and harbaugh would have done him well.

Onto the next..... I don't care who it is, Harbaugh has shown he can develop a QB, so whoever wins..... wins....

Who wouldnt accept someone who could potentially make the team better next year? And for people that say "Give Shane a chance", he WILL be given a chance. Harbaugh likely would not just hand the starting spot to Hogan. If Shane Morris shows he's better than Kevin Hogan, Wilton Speight and maybe Malzone, then Shane Morris will start. Plain and simple.

I haven't exactly been Morris's biggest cheerleader, but if you go back and watch the bowl game against K. State (which Shane started as true freshman), it's hard to come away thinking that he couldn't be a pretty good QB under Harbaugh's tutelage. His pocket poise and decision making were actually pretty good in that game. He finished 24 for 38 (63%) for 196 yards, and rushed for 43 yards...again, as a true freshman...in his first ever start....in a bowl game...against a team that ranked a respectable 30th in total defense. We lost the game 31-14, but our RBs didn't provide much help and only rushed for a combined 22 yards. Imagine what Shane's stat line and the outcome could have been if our running game had produced a respectable 200 yards.

The point is, we're not dealing with a David Cone-level backup talent here. Shane clearly has something that a guy like Harbuagh can work with.

I was impressed with Morris' ability to throw the ball away in an instant against KSU.  Not taking sacks has some value.

Yet we were hearing that he had accuracy issues at the camps after he committed and his play hasn't done anything to dispell that concern.

If Harbaugh could get him to stop throwing it to the bad guys, then we might have something.

(Oh, and 40 of his 43 yards rushing came on one play when KState got caught with all of its players on the right side of the field enabling Morris a wide open run to the left.)

Good move. Have Hogan start his last year at Michigan. He knows the offense and will be a bridge to the other QB's so they can acclimate themselves with the new scheme. Probably have the second best QB as backup. (Speight?) Ideally would like to redshirt Morris and Malzone. Malzone because he is a freshman. Morris because he just looks like he needs more time to develop and plus learn new offense. He should have redshirt his freshman year IMO.

An experienced player who has shown the ability to compete at a high level at the weakest area on the offense? If he wants to come here, this isn't even a question. Give the young guys a year to learn the new system with no pressure, and let Harbaugh have a chance to work with them. We might end up getting one less year out of each QB? Oh well. A strong program isn't really supposed to have quarterbacks start for 3-4 years anyway.

Hogan's from the DC area, and his dad recently passed away. It's possible he'll transfer to a mid-Atlantic school to be closer to family for a year before taking a shot at the NFL.

Most likely, though, he stays at Stanford, where he has the starting gig locked down, for another year before trying to make the jump.

I'm not sold Morris is bad. He come in this year in a super high pressure - high drama setting ...with horrible coaching to boot. JH will get him good -  if the kid has it in him.

With that said - we need solid backup QB's also. See OSU this year for example...

Absolutely bring Hogan in if he wants to come. Morris has earned nothing in the way of a guaranteed starting position. Bring in Hogan and let him, Morris, and Speight compete for the job. May the best man win.
