Kareem Walker given 24 hours to cancel his OVs

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

This according to MGoFish and others apparently.

Walker update: According to the source, that 24 hr deadline being reported is real and if Walker cancels his other OVs, he'll remain w/ OSU.

So we will know a lot more about our possible standing with him in 24 hours.

EDIT: Originally reported on Ohio State Scout Board apparently, and this tweet preceded MGoFish's

@MGoFish hearing OSU giving deadline for Walker to decide if he'll be in class. Couple this with your source and that sounds good for UM

It does seem heavy handed but JB would have saved himself some trouble this year if he used the same approach. I'm not advocating this method for any of our coaches.

Odd. When has Meyer (or OSU for that matter) not loaded up with top talent regardless of open spots? It's a sleazy deal but I'm surprised Meyer doesn't go hard after both, unless each wants to be "the guy." And geez, it's kinda early to be declaring ultimatums. Meyer scare tactics in full force, I suppose.

Urban is salty.

But I can't really blame him if he's got a commit coming from the Wisconsin kid.

Let's not act like we didn't take the sure thing in Higdon when Weber was going back and forth.

The last thing OSU wants is to lose out on both...so whatever. I'll be waiting, and I feel good about this because the timing is AWFUL by OSU. He's still buzzing off the hype of his Michigan visit, I think it would be easier to say "fine...fuck it. I'm going with Michigan!"

One thing we haven't discussed is how does this affect our other RB commits? They've been forgotten about.

Actually, there is no bad news.  He is their commit currently.  If he stays with OSU, its the same news.  If he decomits and comes here, its good news.

What i think would be funny is if he played Urbz.  He cancels his remaining visits.  OSU does not take the wiscy RB.  Day before signing day he decomits from OSU and comes here.

Give me an ultimatum?  Ok.  Ill screw you.

High pressure tactics on a HS kid = DICK! This kid deserves the time to make the best possible decision. Especially when it is life altering. Hopefully this has other recruits doing a double take...

Or OSU has heard something about Walker wavering and it's a PR move to avoid looking like your program is losing a top ranked commit (and possibly to their biggest rival). It makes them look like they were the ones breaking up. "It's not you, it's me."

If the Wisconsin kid is ready to commit he is remaining silent and already knows he is second choice. He will wait and most likely would be willing to flip at any moment. There is no need to pressure Walker like this IMHO.

And i dont see why what Meyer is doing is wrong.  He extended an offer, Walker accepted it and now Walker wants to look around some.  That's fine but OSU isnt obligated to hold the spot open while he does.  Meyer is telling him to fish or cut bait in regards to that previous committment and personally I would do the exact same thing.

This issue has always reminded me of an engagement.  If one party decides during the engagement they want to start dating again then the engagement is off.  That doesnt mean they might not eventually get back together but for now, at least one side doesnt want to make a committment.

I thought Hoke's policy was solid here and I think Meyer's is too.

when you also consider Meyer's tactics to pressure kids to commit, it sounds a little different. So, Meyer can pressure kids to commit and also threaten them with their spot if they take other visits? If he let him take his time, explain his policy when they commit, it would be most fair.

The player maintains the right at all times prior to signing the LOI to say "no".  They can say no to the verbal, they can say no to the demand he cancels the officials and he can say no to the scholly offer.  Last time I checked Meyer wasnt negotiating with a gun in his hand - just a piece of paper.

Both parties are acting in their own self-interest and I see nothing wrong with it.  The good news is it might benefit Michigan so for that I'm happy.  But I think what Meyer is doing is perfectly acceptable.

It's different because Hoke made that policy clear from the beginning and Meyer was letting Walker take visits until today.  So he totally changed up the rules after months of being OK with it.  Not saying it's wrong for Meyer to do it, but it's not the same as what Hoke did.

Some ways in which it's different:

Hoke did it from a position not of strength but of relative weakness, which made it a very risky proposition.

Cryer has Ezekial Elliott and a NC, Hoke was said to have inherited a "bare cupboard" and lucked into a very fine 1st season. THEN he started the "No Visit" policy.

Urban hasn't to my knowledge made this a blanket policy, but chose this instance to make an ultimatum. Refusing to be strung along when you can afford not to be is how every guy wants to treat the courship game.

All that being said, urbz is still a Dick becuase - ohio....!!!!  :-D

It's called hardball. I for one like the approach. I kind of wish our coaches would take a similar tack with kids who are double dealing or drawing out recruitments. UM has been left hanging on more than one occasion by kids who were at one time or another considered locks.

I am not saying he was a great coach but he was fairly successful on the recruting trail. And I heard nothing  from recruits regarding bieng pressured by Hoke. In fact, I rembember reading the exact opposite several times from several sources. I also remember Mattison saying they don't pressure.

Of course, stating your goals and agenda up front honestly and openly isn't necessarily dirty. So, yea

Well it can be, but I don't think it is in this case.

Meyer sees the writing on the wall. Walker is on the fence, and if Meyer has a guy that's ready to commit to him right now 100%, and it's especially a guy he likes, he doesn't want to standing there on NSD being left at the altar by both guys.

It's unfortunate, but it's fair. Meyer only has so many scholarships to work with, and he wants to know that the guys who have committed to him are committed.

Eh, don't mind it. At least it's up front. Both parties now know where things stand and can make better decisions. But I obviously would prefer he de-committed on signing day and leave OSU in the lurch.
