Joy At Sparty's Comeuppance, But ...

Submitted by SF Wolverine on

Holy cow does the B10 have an officiating problem.  I don't remember seeing so many blown calls on such big plays in such proximity to one another.  Replay guys are completely whiffing as often as not as well.  And, I think Sparty got "Sparty Bob'd" by the timekeeper on the last play.

I love me some Sparty tears, but the B10 needs to get this fixed, and promptly.  And, I'd be happy for them to start Sunday by saying publicly "yeah, Sparty, you got f'd -- deal with it."

The timekeeper did not fuck them. The play is dead when it hits something. By the time the ball hit out of the field of play, clock was at zero. Other than that, I'm with you

I hope people realize Nebraska still had two downs with 17 left, even if that TD was disallowed. The way Nebraska was shredding Staee's defense, I think it was likely Nebraska would have scored.

Staee can still end up in the Big Ten title game. I am not ashamed to admit I will be cheering for OSU to beat Staee.

good luck with that secondary against OSU in Columbus.

I can do it (pull for OSU in that game), but I don't think my Ann Arbor-born wife can. So I'll have to remain quiet, or we simply won't watch. Maybe it'll be at the same time as Penn State, so problem solved...

They made Tommy Armstrong Jr. look like an awesome QB. JT will be ripping them apart. Also, they had a hard time containing Tommy. JT is a way better runner and passer than Tommy. And OSU Defense is not a slouch like Nebraska's defense and they play at home. I don't see this going very well for MSU. Dantonio needs to sell the soul of all the Sparties if he wants to win this one. Even that won't be enough.

Here's the thing:  MSU's secondary is, like their program and especially their fanbase, trash.  There is no way of knowing that Nebraska still wouldn't score in spite of the call, but I'm glad the refs screwed up on them.  They deserve it.  Their coach is a dirt bag.  Their program and fans are unbearable assholes.  Fuck them from the bottom of my heart.  I just hope the Buckeyes take them to the shed and we win out so I can go back to smugly ignoring the fuck out of them.

Neb drove 90 yards w no timeouts left. Also, if cook had just taken the sack they could have called timeout and attempted the fg. Instead he chucked it out of bounds for no reason. Msu has lots to be upset about buts refs and timekeepers aint two of them.

MSU was already out of field goal range.  The ball was on the Nebraska 41 -- it would have been a 58 yard field goal.  I believe they said during the broadcast that the MSU kicker's career long was 47.  (Remember MSU going for it repeatedly on 4th down against Michigan, in part because they didn't trust field goal attempts).

Cook certainly has the arm for a Hail Mary from that distance, though, even with the sack yardage.

Normally I'd be with you, but since them losing, and in the manner they did so, helps Michigan have a shot at the conference title I think them losing deserves more celebration than a "whatever."  If we can take care of business this year and pound them next year, I can go back to the blissful "whatever" attitude when it comes to MSU.

In that term, but a Sparty loss barely registers above an Indiana loss in the same situation.

The only game I actually care about with them is the one against the guys in Maize & Blue.

Their fans can go burn a couch though.

I couldn't get a correct angle at first cuz I had to watch the skyview online, but after seeing it, yeeeeaaaahhh... they got screwed.

But there's never been a team that deserved it more. And lets face it, they probably would've found another way to blow it, cause karma. Unless that could be penalized?

Has anyone actually seen the rule ? The Nebraska receiver was not forcefully pushed out, however he was guided out of bounds by the DB.

If he's touched when he's out...it's none reviewable because the replay guy can't say if it was intentional or not...he can just see if there was or wasn't contact.

And there was.

So it was the right call by the replay official.

It was an AWFUL non-call by the on field officials.

every game until the end of days. It would just prove the refs have healthy instincts.

Nah but honestly, if you were in Sparty's shoes and your shot at a NC perhaps goes down in flames over something like this, you'd be mad as hell and with good reason. But I'm not ever gonna walk even a yard in Sparty's shoes so the whole thing leaves me rather full of Schadenfreude.

If the Sparty player would have just kept his hands off the Nebraska player then the replay ref probably indicates he stepped out of bounds and it's not a TD.

Of course, being a "Spartan Dawg" and playing Dantonio and (formerly) Narduzzi's physical  secondary (read: a bunch of hands on the WR) the replay official is pretty much committed to not overturning the call on the field.

Karma sucks like that.

There was a PI on the previous drive where the WR left hand was clearly held and they didn't call it. The WR had to leave the field because he was hurt by that play. I agree. They were physical and if you are, it is very hard to keep expecting those calls to go your way.

They make both Type 1 (not calling it when it should have been called) AND Type 2 errors (calling it when it should not have been called) with alarming frequency.  This happens not just to UMich, but league-wide.

Typically in a new system, you'd see one OR the other error type occur more frequently, but not both. This basically means they are doing it wrong.

and the league hasn't given the refs clarifying instructions on how to implement a consistent interpretation.

Vague rules are typical of sports rulebooks and that's why the "meat" is usually in the guidelines that leagues have for how the rules are to be applied. Either there aren't such guidelines for targeting, they're not clear enough or the referees haven't been trained up on them.

This goes against the grain of the Michigan mojo tonight but we should actually root for sparty to beat the bucknuts, then lose to PSU. This scenario puts us into the B1GCG if we run the table.
