In a text to some Michigan players, Josh Gattis said, “Unfortunately the past few weeks has told a different story to me about the very little appreciation I have here from administration. In life I would never advise anyone to be where they are not wanted…”

I thought Balas was just throwing shit at the wall, but this basically confirms 1) he was told he was not the leading internal candidate if Harbaugh left, 2) that someone directly below him on the food chain (Mike Hart) was, and 3) that it pissed him off enough to leave.

I am still trying to wrap my head all around this. If that is the case, it makes complete sense why Josh is leaving.

Seth and Brian made this comment a couple weeks ago, and I think it hold true. If you are going to have a position coach be the next in line for a HC over a coordinator, you better ensure there is full buy in from staff about that member jumping those who are coordinators. I think it makes sense to infer there are some hurt feelings.

Guess we will see what Weiss does as a coordinator.

Would mark the second place in a row he left on bad terms, third if you include the cup of coffee he ordered at Maryland.

I don't really understand how he ended up with the Broyles award this past season and I'm pretty excited as a fan to move on from him.

The part about him being super messy every time he leaves a place is just fact at this point.  I do think he's a good OC and will be missed but his offense only really took off this year when you had guys like Hart, Weiss, and Moore come on board, and perhaps unsurprisingly that's when you saw the RB and OL take a step forward and we saw Cade (and JJ) look much more competent than in previous years.

I also didn't get why he won the Broyles this year, not because he wasn't a good OC but because I'd argue the better coordinator on the team was Macdonald and his transformation of a defense from gawd awful to elite in a year with a mostly new staff and a lot of mismatched parts is very impressive.

Honestly, as long as they keep Weiss, Hart, and Moore I don't much give a shit who the OC is.  Harbaugh has a long history of hiring good assistants and so I'm sure he'll find a way to stabilize the offense.

Exactly my thoughts how the hell did he win that award.  I think it was more Moore with the O-line then anything.  Our offense was still predictable most of the season and all of the past two seasons.  You need to get the guys with speed involved.   He always preached speed in space and 90% of the time it was not that

I think the lack of speed in space was still more of a Harbaugh thing than Gattis. I suppose we will see this season with a new OC just how much the offensive style and play calling changes. Im still in the camp that believes Harbaugh is controlling a percentage of what our offense does regardless of who holds the OC title. I'd prefer someone known as a big time recruiter in this position as opposed to someone considered more of a scheme or X & O's coach because of that belief.

Can't wait for the blue wall spin to make Gattis look like the bad guy in all of this. "Well, we didn't need him anyways!  I never liked his old-school formations!" lol

Everything is fine.

I mean it's different when you have powerhouse programs like Alabama that lose their coordinators every few years to other programs to make a name for themselves.

But you got Harbaugh trying to get back into the NFL, Macdonald going back to the NFL, and Gattis making a lateral to downgrade move just to get out of Ann Arbor. Not a great look at all after having the best season in decades.

It's a loss but I remember getting into arguments in various UFRs defending Gattis when people said the play calling was garbage, then somewhat pumping the brakes when he suddenly was anointed a savant.

He's a good OC, but until this year his offenses were never particularly dynamic and the parts that were really clicking (the RB and OL) feature new coaches and aren't typically his forte.  He obviously deserves credit for the growth we saw this year but just like you shouldn't put all the blame on him for bad performances we shouldn't shower him with praise for all the good.

I think Gattis wants to be an HC and probably thought UM was his route to it.  That didn't happen.  But of the two coordinator spots UM has to fill Macdonald is far more impactful and important in my eyes.

I just don’t like biased views and this is a Michigan blog so obviously they lean that way. In my eyes as a Michigan fan and alum there’s no difference between an obnoxious rival fan and the extreme maize and blue glasses wearing fan, they’re one and the same.

A mere few weeks ago “Michigan has the best OC, he literally won a trophy for it, lol where the haters at”.  Now it’s “well he wasn’t good anyways, we’re better off without him”.

I am not the biggest fan of this move. It kinda stinks of unprofessionalism. It's not how you move on from a job that gave you national notoriety. I hope he finds what he's looking for, but doing stuff like this burns a lot more bridges than you probably want to in a profession with so little job security.

Now you have to wonder why Alabama let him go so easily? Then factor in him and the Mike L. Situation where he said he called plays and Mike didn't.   Also him putting that out on Twitter like that I am not sure if that was a good move or not.   He easily could have said there were some disagreements or something worded better then blaming it all on Michigan.   Now saying that I have no idea how he was treated and maybe he felt that way and they did have a sit down with the assistants to see if they could be the head coach of Harbaugh left and he was very off putting during the interview and they told him he wouldn't be considered for the job if Jim left.   Who knows?   As long as he is the only one that leaves I am fine with it, I personally don't  understand why he won the Broyles award as we did nothing special.   The offense sucked until the last 6 games of regular season.  CFP it sucked also.  So to me he is overrated and I think we will be better off as long as we don't revert back to the same plays over and over with no imagination.  The days of lining up and saying we our going to win with our best players vs. yours doesn't work.   You need to get skill guys involved and open up the playbook.

Can’t help but think maybe he was also the source of some of the leaks to Balas and others re: Jim saying goodbyes and prepping with Weiss

Hart to OC and asst head coach. There can only be room for 1 heir

Tell me how someone is pulled off th recruiting trail for the rumored indiscretions and THERE IS NO TALK OF IT UNTIL THE PERSON IS LEAVING THE UNIVERSITY FOR THE SAME JOB AT ANOTHER UNIVERSITY. In this day and age, this would have been EVERYWHERE.

It was rumored in various dark parts of the internet but things tend to be ignored during the season because there is so much other news.  And there were issues with him in his personal life dating back some years.  I also remember him and Warriner having a big rift because of personal issues that also seem more relevant now.

You think any university during the season is going to let that out? No way they were probably hoping it was a one time thing and he would change whatever he did wrong.  So he let his feelings get out on Twitter and is basically saying Michigan treated him bad. Yet we were the first school to give him a chance and he is now getting talked up for head coaching jobs and wins an award he shouldn't have won.   So to me even if he didn't think he was being treated good enough Michigan pretty much made his career. So if Michigan is getting bad press saying he isnt respected then Michigan has the right to say the reason why is he was messing up bad while recruiting and could have gave us reasons to be violated by the NCAA.  In the end I am glad he is moving on as I was not impressed with him at all during his time here except this last 6or 7 games and that could.have been from the other coaches input.
