Josh Gattis comments

In a text to some Michigan players, Josh Gattis said, “Unfortunately the past few weeks has told a different story to me about the very little appreciation I have here from administration. In life I would never advise anyone to be where they are not wanted…”

I thought Balas was just throwing shit at the wall, but this basically confirms 1) he was told he was not the leading internal candidate if Harbaugh left, 2) that someone directly below him on the food chain (Mike Hart) was, and 3) that it pissed him off enough to leave.
February 6th, 2022 at 12:59 PM ^
This doesn't confirm any of the points you made above...
February 6th, 2022 at 1:01 PM ^
I am still trying to wrap my head all around this. If that is the case, it makes complete sense why Josh is leaving.
Seth and Brian made this comment a couple weeks ago, and I think it hold true. If you are going to have a position coach be the next in line for a HC over a coordinator, you better ensure there is full buy in from staff about that member jumping those who are coordinators. I think it makes sense to infer there are some hurt feelings.
Guess we will see what Weiss does as a coordinator.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:14 PM ^
I’d think Weiss, Moore or Hart can take over just fine.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:20 PM ^
Hart isn't the only one that passed Gattis. Weiss and Moore were quality hires.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:01 PM ^
Would mark the second place in a row he left on bad terms, third if you include the cup of coffee he ordered at Maryland.
I don't really understand how he ended up with the Broyles award this past season and I'm pretty excited as a fan to move on from him.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
Love reading these stupid posts. You're hurt and your lashing out. It'll be ok.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:11 PM ^
You should probably read his post and respond to it specifically rather than have a canned response that doesn’t make much sense
February 6th, 2022 at 1:15 PM ^
Dude your holding water for the guy, sounds like you’re hurt, the poster sums up what I’d say the majority of fans are thinking.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:55 PM ^
The part about him being super messy every time he leaves a place is just fact at this point. I do think he's a good OC and will be missed but his offense only really took off this year when you had guys like Hart, Weiss, and Moore come on board, and perhaps unsurprisingly that's when you saw the RB and OL take a step forward and we saw Cade (and JJ) look much more competent than in previous years.
I also didn't get why he won the Broyles this year, not because he wasn't a good OC but because I'd argue the better coordinator on the team was Macdonald and his transformation of a defense from gawd awful to elite in a year with a mostly new staff and a lot of mismatched parts is very impressive.
Honestly, as long as they keep Weiss, Hart, and Moore I don't much give a shit who the OC is. Harbaugh has a long history of hiring good assistants and so I'm sure he'll find a way to stabilize the offense.
February 6th, 2022 at 10:04 PM ^
Well, MacDonald did have the best player in CFB on the field, and Clinkscale worked a miracle in the secondary. But the way he bled OSU down the field was absolutely genius. They didn't have a single big play, some medium chunks were it.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:08 PM ^
Exactly my thoughts how the hell did he win that award. I think it was more Moore with the O-line then anything. Our offense was still predictable most of the season and all of the past two seasons. You need to get the guys with speed involved. He always preached speed in space and 90% of the time it was not that
February 6th, 2022 at 1:34 PM ^
I think the lack of speed in space was still more of a Harbaugh thing than Gattis. I suppose we will see this season with a new OC just how much the offensive style and play calling changes. Im still in the camp that believes Harbaugh is controlling a percentage of what our offense does regardless of who holds the OC title. I'd prefer someone known as a big time recruiter in this position as opposed to someone considered more of a scheme or X & O's coach because of that belief.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:01 PM ^
I have a blast at our Father/Son bowling tournament and come home to this horseshit?
Well at least Harbaugh is still here…right?!?
February 6th, 2022 at 1:07 PM ^
What a kick in the balls, probably feel like you're down in the gutters.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:18 PM ^
The thrill of victory and the agony of deGattis.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:19 PM ^
It's like you've thrown 11 strikes in a row and on your last ball for a possible perfect 300 you throw it too far out and it slides in the gutter, with the half the people in the place watching you. You end up with a 290, which is really good but not after you just choked.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:22 PM ^
I know a guy that did that at Mayflower Lanes!? Huge Consolation prize was that he swept all the jackpots that game.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:02 PM ^
Can't wait for the blue wall spin to make Gattis look like the bad guy in all of this. "Well, we didn't need him anyways! I never liked his old-school formations!" lol
Everything is fine.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:12 PM ^
Read the threads. It's already happening. Embarrassing.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:17 PM ^
To be fair it doesn’t seem as though Josh Gattis is being gracious exactly.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:17 PM ^
I mean it's different when you have powerhouse programs like Alabama that lose their coordinators every few years to other programs to make a name for themselves.
But you got Harbaugh trying to get back into the NFL, Macdonald going back to the NFL, and Gattis making a lateral to downgrade move just to get out of Ann Arbor. Not a great look at all after having the best season in decades.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:15 PM ^
It's a loss but I remember getting into arguments in various UFRs defending Gattis when people said the play calling was garbage, then somewhat pumping the brakes when he suddenly was anointed a savant.
He's a good OC, but until this year his offenses were never particularly dynamic and the parts that were really clicking (the RB and OL) feature new coaches and aren't typically his forte. He obviously deserves credit for the growth we saw this year but just like you shouldn't put all the blame on him for bad performances we shouldn't shower him with praise for all the good.
I think Gattis wants to be an HC and probably thought UM was his route to it. That didn't happen. But of the two coordinator spots UM has to fill Macdonald is far more impactful and important in my eyes.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:38 PM ^
Gattis learned more at Michigan than he taught at Michigan.
February 6th, 2022 at 3:45 PM ^
In the same boat as you with DC. Much more worried about who we hire there than as OC. I think the offense should be able to do just fine next year with the returning talent they have, regardless of coordinator.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:43 PM ^
Such a troll comment.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:53 PM ^
"Blue wall" comments from someone people here think is a sparty troll. This won't dissuade those thoughts.
February 6th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
Yeah if that wasn't a Freudian Slip, I've never heard one.
February 6th, 2022 at 3:28 PM ^
I just don’t like biased views and this is a Michigan blog so obviously they lean that way. In my eyes as a Michigan fan and alum there’s no difference between an obnoxious rival fan and the extreme maize and blue glasses wearing fan, they’re one and the same.
A mere few weeks ago “Michigan has the best OC, he literally won a trophy for it, lol where the haters at”. Now it’s “well he wasn’t good anyways, we’re better off without him”.
February 6th, 2022 at 4:17 PM ^
OK, sure, you are the Social Justice Warrior
February 6th, 2022 at 10:28 PM ^
We can be supportive of his winning the award and all associated recognition but at the same time doubt his contributions due to the previous two years and the fact that last years offense didn't look like his "speed in space" masterpiece come to fruition...
February 6th, 2022 at 1:02 PM ^
I am not the biggest fan of this move. It kinda stinks of unprofessionalism. It's not how you move on from a job that gave you national notoriety. I hope he finds what he's looking for, but doing stuff like this burns a lot more bridges than you probably want to in a profession with so little job security.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:04 PM ^
I take he didn't reach out to you on professional advice? Darn, sucks for him.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:07 PM ^
No, it's just my two cents on a blog discussion board. Take it or leave it
February 6th, 2022 at 1:13 PM ^
I’m getting the feeling the guy you responded to is related to Gattis as he being a total dick to anyone suggesting publicly burning bridges after you quit a high profile job might not be a great idea
February 6th, 2022 at 1:30 PM ^
Yeah B-nut is seriously butthurt about any legit concerns being voiced re: gattis throwing shade at Michigan on his way out
February 6th, 2022 at 1:22 PM ^
Good luck in Miami Josh. With Jim’s connections to Cristobal I’m sure he had a hand in helping you along, be more gracious.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:40 PM ^
Jim knew Gattis was leaving before Gattis did.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
I agree. But. Are you sure you mean "notoriety"? Perhaps "recognition" might fit better?
February 6th, 2022 at 1:32 PM ^
In the era of transfers, it’s not just unprofessional…it borders on tampering
February 6th, 2022 at 7:15 PM ^
Was what Harbaugh doing professional?
February 6th, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
Remember Gattis didn't go quiet when he left Bama either. Had a feud with Locksley over who was calling plays.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
Now you have to wonder why Alabama let him go so easily? Then factor in him and the Mike L. Situation where he said he called plays and Mike didn't. Also him putting that out on Twitter like that I am not sure if that was a good move or not. He easily could have said there were some disagreements or something worded better then blaming it all on Michigan. Now saying that I have no idea how he was treated and maybe he felt that way and they did have a sit down with the assistants to see if they could be the head coach of Harbaugh left and he was very off putting during the interview and they told him he wouldn't be considered for the job if Jim left. Who knows? As long as he is the only one that leaves I am fine with it, I personally don't understand why he won the Broyles award as we did nothing special. The offense sucked until the last 6 games of regular season. CFP it sucked also. So to me he is overrated and I think we will be better off as long as we don't revert back to the same plays over and over with no imagination. The days of lining up and saying we our going to win with our best players vs. yours doesn't work. You need to get skill guys involved and open up the playbook.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
Between the constant coaching carousel, the transfer portal and NIL, college athletics--football in particular--is quickly becoming a joke.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
Can’t help but think maybe he was also the source of some of the leaks to Balas and others re: Jim saying goodbyes and prepping with Weiss
Hart to OC and asst head coach. There can only be room for 1 heir
February 6th, 2022 at 1:57 PM ^
Jesus Christ.
It's amazing how quick & happy people are to make up narratives that make them feel better.
February 6th, 2022 at 7:45 PM ^
Well it certainly beats making up narratives that make you feel worse
February 6th, 2022 at 1:07 PM ^
Tell me how someone is pulled off th recruiting trail for the rumored indiscretions and THERE IS NO TALK OF IT UNTIL THE PERSON IS LEAVING THE UNIVERSITY FOR THE SAME JOB AT ANOTHER UNIVERSITY. In this day and age, this would have been EVERYWHERE.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:09 PM ^
It was rumored in various dark parts of the internet but things tend to be ignored during the season because there is so much other news. And there were issues with him in his personal life dating back some years. I also remember him and Warriner having a big rift because of personal issues that also seem more relevant now.
February 6th, 2022 at 1:16 PM ^
You think any university during the season is going to let that out? No way they were probably hoping it was a one time thing and he would change whatever he did wrong. So he let his feelings get out on Twitter and is basically saying Michigan treated him bad. Yet we were the first school to give him a chance and he is now getting talked up for head coaching jobs and wins an award he shouldn't have won. So to me even if he didn't think he was being treated good enough Michigan pretty much made his career. So if Michigan is getting bad press saying he isnt respected then Michigan has the right to say the reason why is he was messing up bad while recruiting and could have gave us reasons to be violated by the NCAA. In the end I am glad he is moving on as I was not impressed with him at all during his time here except this last 6or 7 games and that could.have been from the other coaches input.
