It’s the preseason but one of his triples reminded me of this so I’m posting it.  Go Blue!

Looks like prime Seth Curry...

Where the hell was that shit when he wore Maize&Blue?  I don't recall those shots...  (Save for the shot, obviously!)

He definitely seems to be improving and here's hoping he has a long, productive NBA career.  Even if he does, we'll never know if he made "the" right call - he was going to be a pro either way.  He may have blown up his next year in college and been a lottery pick, who knows?

I will say this, my brother and I texted each other the same message when the Warriors drafted him and thought that was an absolutely ideal landing spot for him to have no early pressure to succeed, to learn from Steph and Klay under a coach in Kerr who will let him be himself.

It was definitely the right call. If he stays like this, he should be getting a nice contract with the warriors and they're one of the most ideal teams to play for right now.  We wouldn't have taken him at 2 in the 2020 draft, and he would've probably got lost on a team like the Kings or Wizards and not heard from for a few years as part of a trade package. Developing in an ideal environment is doing Poole wonders.

Let's look at his decision from a purely financial perspective.

Poole was drafted 28th overall in 2019, and signed a 4-year, $10.1M contract with the Warriors, of which $6.2M was guaranteed (which is also what he will have earned through the end of the current season). So right away, he was guaranteed a lot of financial security. He is eligible for an extension this offseason, and will be a free agent after next season.

Even without projecting likely improvement, last season he averaged 22.3 points/36. Evan Fournier, who is another SG who averaged 20.6 points/36 last season, just signed a 4-year, $78M contract this offseason. Fournier is a better defender than Poole, but he's also older and unlikely to improve, so I think something like that is a reasonable expectation for Poole's next contract, pending any improvement. If he were to sign that as an extension or as a free agent, then he would make roughly $90M total through the end of the 2026-27 season.

Let's say Poole had stayed at Michigan another year, and improved enough so that he was the 10th pick overall (likely his ceiling, considering his size and defensive issues). The 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft signed a 4-year, $19.3M contract, with $8.7M guaranteed. So that's a bump of $9M over Poole's actual 2019 contract. But to get that, he had to risk his $6.2M guaranteed on the possibility of injury or regression. In addition, by staying in college another year, he delays his free agency by a year. That means he would be a year behind on his second contract, missing a year of big payout. If we assume that Poole would keep improving at the same rate and earn the same second contract, he would earn roughly $79M through the end of the 2026-27 season.

So in summary, staying in college for an extra year both would entail more risk and would limit his financial upside due to delaying the second contract. That's why it's almost always a good idea for players to go pro if they're going to be drafted in the first round.

Sincere thanks for that breakdown. Two variables not considered here though are that his second contract may have been larger by postponing it a year as the salary caps grows virtually every year, and more importantly, he got extremely lucky to be drafted into the circumstance he did.  Going to the warriors, with Klay and Steph both going down with injuries, zero pressure to carry the team, freedom to chuck up shots, etc.  It was a perfect fit for him, but he could have very well not earned a second contract had he landed in a worse situation, and could have easily slid a few picks and not had the guaranteed contract.  Either way, seems ideal and hope he builds a long term NBA all star career.

It's funny because he really was not good his rookie season. He was considered one of the worst players in that draft class for a long time. I love JP (he was my favorite player on the team when he was here), his improvement after that year has been astronomical, but IDK if he would have played much better if he stuck around another year.

You're not wrong about his rookie season. Most draft grades said he has offensive potential, but at least 1 season away. Of course, with the injuries to the starters his rookie year, he got thrown into the fire and understandably struggled. But then you look at his stats from last season and you can see significant improvement across the board - ppg, FG%, 3pt%, eFG%, PPP...

So I kinda can see what the other guy was saying about whether or not it was the right decision - would another year of college accolades and a different landing spot have made for a more productive rookie season? Maybe, but I think he's ultimately in a really good situation. He got to learn by fire without much expectations and is now a much better player on a better team.

I am so glad JP has continued to improve in his young NBA career. So many from this blog were throwing dirt on his name. I'll admit, while I never bad-mouthed him, I did have my concerns about how successful his transition would be. Good on you JP, keep grinding and making it happen for yourself!

Rooting for him. While this blog was shoveling dirt on him I was arguing he should have been getting the pick and roll reps that were going to Simpson. Maybe it wouldn't have worked, Simpson wouldn't have spaced the court, and I think you need a lot of reps to learn the pick and roll.

However, during his final year, he should have been the focal point of the offense because that team had a real offensive ceiling, and he was the one guy that could have potentially lifted it. Oh well. Happy for him.

People were definitely not shoveling dirt on him and the Jordan Poole that is playing in the NBA right now is not even close to the same player we saw at Michigan. Running the offense through him would have been an awful idea-He didn’t make good decisions with the ball and threw up a lot of late shot clock bombs because of it. I am really happy he is finding success, but Poole has grown a lot since he left here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I believe your understandings here totally misses the mark-and more. Jordan left for very good on-the-court reasons...reasons that you fail to either acknowledge or understand. He, time after time, got stuck with the ball very late in the shot clock and was given no choice but to take bad shots. And the reason this happened was going to remain in place the next year. Say what you will about this but he was a young kid and he left with more grace and dignity-more maturity than was required.

Going off in preseason is all well and good but I sincerely hope that his next going off and thread about going off will be after he goes off in a game that counts for something when you go off.

That said, GO OFF young fella.

He has an opportunity for a real role with the GSW. Klay hasn’t played in damn near 2 years and is coming off ACL/Achilles tears. We’ll see how well Klay can move especially on defense,  where he would take on the tough assignments from the opps. I think Jordan averages 11-15 pts this year.

Yes! F the haters!

Love me some Jordan Poole.

Sorry, still a little bit angry at the idiots. The JP incident really broke me of my compulsive visits to both UMHoops and Mgoblog for a while.

Thrilled to see him reaching his potential!

Like a few others here, I always loved JP's game. The haters here were very disappointing.  I knew he had this type of potential when I first saw him in a high school all star game.  He was called "Baby Steph" for a reason.  His talent wasn't utilized optimally in college.   In fairness to the coaches, his on court judgement and discipline were lacking at times.  With hard work and maturity, this seems to have changed.
