Joe Schad: Michigan targeting NU AD Jim Phillips

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Interesting. Isn't this the guy that was jumping around under the goalpost waving "no good" at Michigan's fire drill FG at NU in 2013?

Michigan has targeted Northwestern athletics director Jim Phillips as a candidate to succeed Dave Brandon.

This is an indication that Michigan will seriously consider AD candidates without Michigan ties.

The story cites a single source. This could be floated either by Phillips' agent, or by U of M so they get the narrative out there about not going after simply people with Michigan ties. Either side would benefit from leaking such information.

I don't give a shit if the AD is a three headed alien as long as he hires Jim Harbaugh. WE WANT JIM HARBAUGH. Man I feel like they are going to screw it up somehow. Maybe the past decade of incompetence has turned me into a cynic.

Honest question.   It's like walking on eggshells around UM.  If the new AD does anything wrong then people like WD will file a FOIA request to dig up dirt on the guy and get him fired.

Most ADs aren't so dumb as to antagonize their fanbase as Brandon did. Have you not been paying attention these past 4 years?

Dave Brandon's tenure is a case study in how not to treat your fans. His emails in particular are  egregious as no CEO would even conceive of reading, much less responding to angry emails.

It astounds me that you have purposefully ignored what Dave Brandon did and how other ADs' would look at it. What AD would release a statement at 1 am? Who would write peevish and sarcastic responses to fans? Who would let his coach out to dry?

Answer: no competent AD.

Take off your Michigan glasses. We're not even in the top 10 of as or head football coaches in the country much less a top 3. I agree with straightdave. I'm not sure why anyone would willingly take this job. Would you want to deal with all the politics, in-fighting, factions, and vindictive fans that our ad will have? I certainly wouldn't. It's just asking to be fired

I think it's hilarious that so many people think that it somehow wouldn't occur to EVERY AD CANDIDATE to offer Jim Harbaugh lots of money n shit

like that's not at all going to be the obvious move

has to be gauged by what they've done with what they have. Chicago is a BB recruiting hotbed but kids don't grow up and want to play at NW. In the Midwest, FB players go to NW when they are truly great students and not offered by any local school they want a degree from. That lands them a sleeper or two a year while coaching gets others to play up beyond their potential. Yet, Fitz was inherited. So, with this guy you can't judge him against major FB/BB schools but within the limits of what is expected vs what they get. If "10 scaling" it: Are you a 4 destination but hired a 6 coach? That's better than being a 9 destination and hiring an 8. You have a better coach but you hired beneath your capability when a school with less then half of your ability/cache lured a guy that could have taken a "better" job. An AD is like a coach recruiting ONE player lol. It's a ratio thing more than a direct, blind results thing.

Assuming there's some truth to what Schad is saying, I definitely wonder if going after Phillips is a reflection of Schlissel preferring an athletic director who's accustomed to particularly high academic standards.

This candidate is an interesting one, as he is not a Michigan Man, unlike the first three candidates I have listed. This gentleman would be an outsider, and he has some qualities that make him a highly touted candidate. Jim Phillips spent two years on the AD Chair of the Big Ten and is also a working member of the Rose Bowl Management committee. He is a person that is familiar with the Big Ten Conference, along with the best bowl game in all of the bowl games played, the Rose Bowl. Before his time at Northwestern, Phillips spent time at Notre Dame as the assistant athletic director. Despite being an outsider, Phillips would be a decent outside candidate to succeed Dave Brandon.

Michigan Man != Someone with previous ties to Michigan.

In fact, Bo might not even consider Jim Harbaugh a Michigan Man after his comments a few years ago.  Not that that matters.  I'd welcome Harbaugh with open arms.  The point is, the "Michigan Man" thing has been falsely twisted and needs to be totally taken out of consideration for any national job searches.

Oddly enough, that was actually the president of the university, not the AD.
