Jim Tressel is a Free Man this Week

Submitted by FauxMo on

After five years of hard labor in the worst place in the world (i.e. Youngstown, Ohio), Coach Jim Tressel - formerly of THE Ohio State University in THE State of Ohio - will see his 5-year show-cause penalty end this week.

So, here's the question... Does anyone else think he ends up back in coaching? Honestly, I could see it. Yes, he's the president of a university now, and that's not a bad gig, but you have to think that a guy with that much ego and that much lust for unfair competition, who still has so many tattoos and cars to give to young disenfranchised men just trying to make their way in the world, he's gotta miss the game.

are laying out in the weeds.

Don't know what a college president makes as compared to a head coach but I have to believe that someone looking to change the future in their football program would backup a dump truck, with the idea he "committed a crime and did the time"

It may be to old to start a long term contract though. Big time schools want someone with the potential to be there for a long time. His best bet would be a place that loses good coaches after a few years anyway.

The cheating ban makes him untouchable at Notre Dame and other blue bloods. The five years away won't help either. Maybe Akron will give him a look. If he's a head coach again, I'd bet on it being a small school in Ohio. His show cause order ending isn't exactly news to anyone in the business. There are good reasons his name wasn't mentioned for any of the recent job openings, including Cincinnati.

I have to think he starts appearing on lists here and there if openings arise, but I also have this suspiciion that - if anyone considers Tressel (why would you? Strange things have happened in football, of course) - it would be as a stopgap hire for some longer term plan due in part to age. I could see him at least getting some interest though, but of course the question is this - does he want to try it one more time now over five years distant from his last head coaching position?

Ohio State has a proud history of firing even its most revered coaches.  I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Woody Hayes, Earle Bruce, and John Cooper all walked away from coaching after their dismissals.  Luke Fickell was an interim and let's be honest, one of these things is not like the other (never fully established, still very young).  I think Tressel keeps OSU as his last coaching gig and preserves all the good will among the OSU community.  I'm still holding out hope for a nice historical bookend wherein Clemson gets a late INT against the Buckeyes in the CFP and Urban Meyer punches the Clemson DB in a rage before getting fired the next day.

Thinking back to when his application was FOIA'ed, I still think it's positively hilarious any college or university would have considered him a viable candidate for a presidency gig--much less hire him. IIRC, part of it was even in a Comic Sans-type font. What a joke.

Tressel is enjoying a working retirement. Maybe he takes on a rehab project at a MAC school or DII in Ohio where he is revered and familiar with the landscape (kind of like Schnellenberger at FIA a few years back).

Tressel is not going back to coaching football.  Sure it would be more money, but the guy's probably worth $25m+.  He's got more money than he could ever spend.

I will always be grateful to Tressel for one thing - perfectly picturing the Ohio mentality. That scene of a disgraced coach being paraded aroung the field and wildly cheered defines those "people".
