Jim Harbaugh Calls out Urban Meyer on Podcast

Submitted by UMFanatic96 on July 18th, 2019 at 11:10 AM

Jim Harbaugh went on Tim Kawakami's podcast recently--one of the NFL writers who thought Michigan fans were stupid for thinking Harbaugh would ever leave the NFL.

On this podcast, Harbaugh talks about the upcoming season and his recent seasons at Michigan. However, he also calls out Urban Meyer by stating:

"Urban Meyer's had a winning record. Really phenomenal record everywhere he's been. But also, controversey follows everywhere he's been."

No lies detected...how do you feel about Harbaugh saying this? Link to the podcast is below, warning it is on the Athletic and for subscribers only.

There wasn't one...  He had demonstrable success at his coordinator-level assistant coaching stops, and as a head coach.  Perhaps a better background check would have revealed the acrimony with the WVU AD, and that might have shunted him aside.  But other than that, I do't see anything from his past that throws up a strong 'no, thanks' signal.

That happened once he got to Arizona...

Not so much. If I got to choose between Michigan winning the Big Ten coached by Harbaugh (hopefully that starts happening this year) or Michigan winning a national championship with Meyer coaching I'd rather have the conference championships than have Meyer associated with U of M.

My wife is an OSU fan, and we have mutual disgust in Urban Meyer. She says she can never appreciate wins because Meyer is an abuse enabler, and she hated him from Florida. Only adult aged men who prioritize a sport over a life will accept  Meyer and his enabling wife. Because you will bend moral code for a coach, doesn’t mean most of us will. See: Tennessee and Schiano.

I don't think OP understands what "calls out" means.

A more reasonable title would have been "Jim Harbaugh truthfully answers questions about Urban Meyer on Podcast"

I seem to remember Meyer taking a smarmy, passive-aggressive, public swipe at Harbaugh when both were at a coach's clinic a couple years ago. Something about "the most important thing is to beat your rival."

Fuck Urban Meyer. A more accurate description, after saying he's a great football coach, is "he also seems to have a large number of his players get arrested and he harbored a serial wife-beater on his staff for a decade."

Meyer did call that out at a coaches clinic in front of potential recruits. Harbaugh was the keynote speaker and spoke well after a Urban made those comments.   Kinda raises the question why he didn’t say anything then?  I’d rather call someone out to their face than be passive about it than find your voice when you know you’re not going to be across the sideline and have to shake hands at midfield after the game.  It’s just a bad look tbh.

I think that 100% depends on how Day does. If he falters and Urban bails, I think you're absolutely correct. If he keeps it rolling, I assume that the cooler poopers will probably be glad to have a younger coach with less "health issues".

Actually, if you read their boards, most of their fans expect him to take the USC job and really don't seemed that upset about it.  They're more upset with their President Drake and the Board who many believe (behind the scenes) somewhat forced Meyer out.

Harbaugh is great....

That said, I think he should not talk about injuries ever, not talk about other coaches or programs and the only exception is....

BUSH LEAGUE.  Mork D'antisportsmanonio.

After we BEAT them....

It’s true, but what good does it do to say this? Jim Harbaugh has not been squeaky clean throughout his coaching career so why engage in this? All this is going to do is sound like sour grapes because Urban kicked Michigan’s ass while he was at OSU.

People could make the argument any of these events are ‘controversial’:

  • Getting arrested as the head coach at a college. Not a good look.
  • Ghosting recruits at Stanford and Michigan, including a high profile one at U of M that doesn’t seem to be aging all that well
  • Albeit he was suspended, but putting a convicted felon on the field isn’t a great look.
  • Employed DJ Durkin
  • Getting into twitter spats with media people and other figures

Are those as bad as Urban’s ‘controversies’? Probably not, but there’s enough to support Harbaugh hasn’t been squeaky clean. But my main point about this: Why even bother? What good does it do to say that?

Immediately suspended LTT for taping himself having sex with a chick when we really really really needed a decent left tackle. Harbaugh is a lot of things, but he's definitely not soft on who fuck up.

Expecting perfection out of people is childish.

If this take were salsa, it wouldn't even be mild.  It would be tomato fruit salad at best.  As someone above said, all three sentences are true.  (And by the way, he didn't even assign blame to Meyer for controversy following him, he just noted it.)

You and Cobra need to listen, or read, about what JH actually said.  Not only did he admit that Meyer was a great coach, he also unequivocally admitted that Meyer owned the head to head record. He also said that Michigan strives to win, and hopefully this will get it.  He said nothing that wasn't truth, nor did he disparage Meyer in any way.

Speaking truth is not disparaging, despite whatever it might look like to whomever doesn't like truth.
