It's hilarious how badly Izzo is out recruiting Beilein. Can't wait until this guys contract is up. $3.37 million for what, a coach that is barely over .500 in B1G play, recruits like he's at a mid major, and either misses the tournament or doesn't make it past the first weekend 80% of the time.

Awesome.

Given we were cheating for a chunk of that time period, uh......

What's funny is even through all that nonsense taking place behind the scenes, Steve Fisher still couldn't win the conference even once.

John Beilein is clean as a whistle and has won it twice in the last six years.

This post reveals a couple things about you:

1) Cheating in the NCAA is abhorrent to you because your whole world revolves around college sports. Those of us with with more global knowledge of society realize that it a victimless crime unworthy of intense shame.

2) You don't know jackshit about what's valuable in college basketball. Conference titles are nice but not nearly as important as in football as they take a HUGE backseat to tournament success. No one cares that Michigan didn't win a Big Ten title in 1989. Similarly, no one will remember or care that MSU did in 2016.

Point 1 is dead on. Just step back and see the whole picture: Money is being transferred from people who have it to people who don't. The people who don't are providing a service, one that's far more valuable than what they're being paid. And it's an outrage that they're getting paid at all?

I get that it's against NCAA rules and that schools have an obligation to follow the rules. Still, it's kinda ridiculous how this whole dynamic is regarded by many as so shameful. This constant talk about winning the right way is really just a way to feel morally superior, and a cover for not being superior on the court.

We were cheating in 1989?

If so, that's news to me.

Steve Fisher's NC >>>>>>>>> any amount of big ten championships.

I also have it on good authority that the "cheating" we were doing in the 90s was really no different that what most other schools were doing. Keep in mind that we, the university of Michigan, did not give impermissible benefits to anymore, we failed to control ONE GUY who was too close to the program. Therefore the "cheating" we were doing was not of the variety that gave us an advantage on the court. Chris Webber was coming to Michigan Ed Martin or not.

I was at M from 1985-89 and all I can say is, many of those basketball players were driving really nice new cars.

Except, if I remember correctly, Butch Wade.  He was one of my favorites and I think he had an old beat up car.  It was him or one of the others from the 85-86 team that drove around in an old Cadillac or Lincoln.

Beilein has won 64% of his B1G games.

Izzo has won 70%.

I'll take Beilein's record without the rapists, domestic violence accusations, gun violations, etc.  What's the worst we've been accuses of lately?  Smoking weed?  Give me a break.

Other coaches:

Thad Matta - 64%

Matt Painter - 52%

Tom Crean - 62%

I don't really get it either.  After our great run to the final and then the elite eight it looked like we were on the upswing.  If Belein could do that with what he had, imagine what he would do with top 10 classes we thought.

But it's pretty obvious that Belein will not recruit the 1 and done types and just isn't willing to play the AAU street agent game that even the likes of the saint Coach K has been cited as dealing with, although often through 3rd parties.

What Belein has done while keeping things seemingly as clean as possible is actually quite impressive, but that next step wont be taken until he is willing to get his hands a bit dirty.  This isn't football (where you recruit 30 guys a year) and he isn't Harbaugh and doesn't have the Big House and crazy tradition behind him.

Belien wont be getting dirty any time soon, so just be happy we are making the tournament, because we've come a long way.

and as for the recruit.  Now he can go to MSU and not learn how to shoot, play trash ball and hack and run after missed shots on the offensive boards, and enter the league with lesser skills than anything he would have gotten under Belein.  So congrats on choosing to play prison ball at East Landfill.

I think this notion that most other programs are dirty is hogwash.  Wisconsin hasn't missed the tournament or finished below 4th in the Big Ten in like 2 decades, I highly doubt they're dirty.  I don't think Villanova is dirty.  Point is, certain programs remain highly competitive even though they don't land the elite recruits.  Even taking out recruiting, Beilein is a highly flawed coach.  His teams don't play defense (which we're all hoping changes this year), his teams are always undersized, and his teams are generally heavily reliant on the 3 point ball.  There are coaches out there that could turn Michigan into a more consistent program, even without playing dirty on the recruiting trail.
