That most players who have played through high school have had a concussion. They may not all have been diagnosed, but I would bet they have had them.

Curious. When I played Pop Warner I experienced on a few occasions getting my "bell rung." You're dazed, dizzy, see spots, but only for a few minutes. Does that constitute a mild concussion?

Quite likely...yes. That's what we're finding out. So obviously we go through life and have these incidences and we continue on, no big deal. But hit after hit after hit after hit (especially in the higher ranks for football where collisions become truly violent) and well, therein lie the issues.

the thing that always stood out was a very distinct smell. almost like the earthiness scent of water from a garden hose

Because there is no cut and dry way to diagnose them and with today's heightened awareness and fear of them basically anytime you don't feel 100% after head contact its a concussion.

He was pretty excited at his alma mater last night as his boys from Toledo CC knocked off Detroit King in a very good HS football game. I'm thinking he will be OK and looking forward to his progress as an O lineman for UM. Was pretty good on the offensive side of the ball in HS, too.
