Jake Butt getting media love in Denver

Submitted by 950_Blue on

Denver has a relatively tough media circuit, mostly because Broncos expectations are always high, and it's an unapologetic football city (e.g. the Rockies are in first place, the NFL season is 4 months away, and yet 90% of sports radio is still Broncos coverage). The flagship show of the area is The Drive, co-hosted by Al Williams, who won a national championship with CU under former UM assistant coach Bill McCartney, and later won 2 super bowls with Denver. He also saw Butt in person at the CU game this year. Everyone in the media in Denver has been loving this 5th round steal, and the clip below is a good example.

Start around 16:40 into the 2nd hour on 5/15 here.

Of course, the station is also getting their feet wet with his last name.

Cant wait to watch Jake Butt on Sunday live. Im not a Broncos fan but I told all my Bronco buddies that Butt is the goods

I was also at a Rockies game this past weekend with Kershaw pitching and the park was half full into the 5th inning. So this is a football town

definitely is a football town, but the Rockies are drawing well and if they continue their strong play they will be a tough ticket as the summer wears on. They averaged over 40K for the entire Dodgers series.

The Broncos are thrilled with getting Butt in the 5th round as they know it was a steal. When he's back to 100% he will be a huge weapon for them.

I was thinking the other day that, if he should be so fortunate as to get a shoe endorsement ever, "We Make Butt Run" would catch on somehow. Of course, this could easily be on the business card of a gastroenterologist or on the door at your local BWW, so I guess you still need to choose your slogan wisely.

I have to say the OP is correct in the disproportionate amount of Broncos coverage to all other sports. I mean the Avs have been horrible and the Nuggets are about as mediocre as you can get but with the Rockies doing well, you'd think the local sports media would share the love? Nope. It's Broncos day in, day out. Although I will say in my experience, they are one of the most loyal, fun fanbases to go out with on Sunday Funday. But alas, I'm a Lions fan. Candlelight Tavern forever!

I was at the Dodgers/Rockies game Saturday night.  Big crowd, nearly 50K.

About 10K Dodgers fans watching the game.

About 5K Rockies fans watching the game.

And about 35K Denver residents who were there solely for the atmosphere and to drink beer.

Is what it is.  Rockies are pretty good this year, they're an intriguing team.  But Denver --- due to a combination of (1) being a Broncos town first-and-foremost, (2) the insane # of transplants who live here, and (3) all social activities (disproportionaly more so vs. other towns) revolving around outdoors stuff and beer --- it will never be a baseball town like other places I've known (Detroit, Cincinnati).

Candlelight Tavern is on my list to check out this fall --- maybe see you there!

It's an amazing pro football town that is obsessed with the broncos and rightfully so considering the success. No city in the country that has all 4 major sports that is as obsessed with one specific local team like Denver(really the entire Rocky Mountain region) is with the broncos. Butt lucked into going to one of the premiere franchises and pro football cities.

Sports talk radio here in Denver interviewed JB the other day. He talked about Michigan's playbook preparing him for learning a pro playbook. This led to a long discussion about how well Harbaugh offensive players are prepared to transition into the pros.

The entire Butt family should get an endorsement deal from a yoga pants manufacturer. Every Butt looks better in our yoga pants.

The Detroit Lions will regret the day that they kept passing on drafting Butt. The organization is not smart enough to look at prospects in their own back yard. This is why the lions have to buy their own tickets to attend a super bowl

I'd rather see Michigan players go anywhere than Detroit so we can possibly see them in a SB. Detroit has been a career black hole for many talented people unfortunately.

You beat me to the punch.  Sucks he has to play for Cleveland, but I hope to see him do great things while he's with them.  Mostly to enjoy the hypocricy of the buckeye fans, who would talk loads of shit about Jabril,  start singing his praises now that he's playing for the Browns.  I also hope his career is long and takes him the hell outta Cleveland, sooner the better.

Wasn't he gonna collect big insurance money if he fell below the second round due to injury?
