The only way Jabrill is going to win the Heisman is if he has a big season offensively. He's not going to get enough chances at safety for interceptions. A season of 4 INTS, 4 sacks, couple of forced fumbles, 300 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, and 6-7 TD's would give him a shot.

and even so, a safety set NCAA interception record 2 years ago.

Plus, he basically dropped 4-5 INTs this past season as it was. I'd say those numbers are well in possible range, but fewer receiving yards, more rushing, more sacks or tackles for loss, and a return TD or two.

In terms of previous and potential production, I'd say Chesson has a better shot of winning the Heisman than Jabrill.

Whenever people talk about the last pure WR to win the award, people skip Des and go all the way to Tim Brown.  I thought Tim took a punt back for a TD against Sparty, but it must have been a different big play.

But Desmond had the kick return TD against BC to open the season and everyone remembers the OSU return.

The Heisman has become the "offensive player of the year" award.  I think the only way Peppers could pull it off, is if he has some explosive plays/touchdowns on offense, maybe a return or two for a TD.  Think Honeybadger, but a better utilized offensive weapon.

Good point.  I would be curious, though, to see the voting history over the years.  Traditionally, the Heisman has always been the offensive MVP, but it seems like there are less and less non-QB/RB/WR candidates now than ever.  Hell, even Orlando Pace got some votes in 96 as a offensive tackle.

Also how he plays in big games is a huge factor. Woodson's battle with D Boston/OSU was hyped up pretty good and then boiled over by his ability to back it up consistently every time Charles touched the ball. Looking at the 2016 schedule, Peppers will have many opportunities for the same sort of showcase. If I had to pick anyone to do it, it's Jabrill.

it will be incredibly tough for him to win the Heisman with Fournette, McAffery, and Watson all return and will get all the hype. He would have  to have a season like no one has ever seen before.

I hope he stays for 2017 but even if he doesnt he has a great chance to become the best defensive player in the country but i dont think he has a shot at the heisman. I feel like the only reason he was getting carries at running back was because our running back production struggled against the good teams. If the citrus bowl is any indication we should be fine running the ball next season which might limit his carries.

also improving his pass coverage skills.  He is still hit or miss in man coverage and as such teams tried to exploit that this past year vs. going after Jordan Lewis.  Making big plays with ints, punt returns, etc. won't be enough if his pass coverage isn't close to shut down status.

If we are blowing out teams I can see him being held back on offense until the MSU game.

Then unleash the hounds. !!!!

Just thinking about how Denard was a touchdown/long run breaking machine and did not get to the podium.

That said, I hope he shatters my expectations!

It definitely has to start with a highlight reel.

I recall the season Dez won it, it was almost every time he dropped back to receive there was a palatable chance he was going to house it.  Nothing soaks up airtime like Kick and punt returns* because you can't just show a couple camera angles and circus catch, TV must show it all start to finish.

* and FG returns as the Sabanator will tell you!

Look at the numbers Christian McCaffrey put up this year.  If he has another season anything like this next year, there is no way Peppers can compete with that.

Plus Deshaun Watson is back too and he might have a better shot at it than McCaffrey

The Heisman field is as loaded as I can ever remember it.  It would take some major injuries and or performance disappointments for Peppers to even register in the discussion IMO.   And that is no slight to Peppers, just a reality for a defensive player.  Defensive players are going to have a lot of trouble when there are multiple offenisve guys putting up video game numbers on national title contending teams.   IMO Woodson was only able to beat Manning because Michigan was undefeated and Tennessee was once again an also-ran.

Would be nice, but there's no fucking way. With Watson and Fournette and McCaffrey out there, the impact he'd have to make as a two-way player would be insane. Not to mention, you still have Adoree Jackson out there that does the same thing as Peppers, but has an additional year of experience doing it.

It seems like there is a pretty packed field of potential Heisman candidates right now, particularly considering who is returning on various teams. Right now, it's difficult to say that he has a better shot necessarily than anyone of maybe 10 or 15 players at least, but I will say that if he has a great first half of the year at least, hearing a Michigan player in the faint echoes of early Heisman talk - a primarily defensive one at that - would be very nice indeed.

Based on what I saw the past few weeks Christian McCaffrey or Deshaun Watson are the 2 most impressive players in CFB.  I am sure Fournette is up there too.  Peppers is an excellent player but won't have the numbers - I think it will be nearly impossible for a primarily defensive player to ever win again.  I don't know how many INTs Charles had the year he won but you have to remember the did big things in big games.  Running back a punt for a TD vs OSU, INT that still plays on highlight films vs MSU, etc.  Peppers would need a Desmond King like INT rate (I believe he had 8) to even get in top 5 IMO - that was not a strong suit for him.... and then combine that with Will Likely type danger on punt returns which right now he is not there.

Adoree Jackson if he played on the East Coast and Peppers are probably the 2 most dynamic defensive players in the country in terms of being able to do it all but like McCaffrey Jackson is hurt by playing on the left coast.

Historically did any hype help Charles Woodson (the first and only primarily defensive player to win the trophy)? Or did his spectacular play?

Don't worry about the odds - if he turns in a Woodsonesque performance the betting action will be centered on Michigan winning the national championship.
