Is it time we award the players an item for winning 'The Game'?
We all know Ohio State players receive a gold pants trinket when they beat Michigan. They have all sorts of things that memorialize us: Script Ohio, Carmen, Ohio. From their side of the rivalry there is true fabric to this game.
It ain't going away. We can give it lip service, 'The greatest rivalry in sports', but the fact is we as a team, as a community, rarely if ever match the passion for this game that they have. Perhaps it would behoove us to bring more depth to this game, and one way would be to provide a momento for those players that beat Ohio State.
Before you all - you know who you are - go half cocked and knock the suggestion down and burn it with mental fire without thought, this fight ain't going away. It means a great deal - in our hearts - to win this game. Maybe we should reward our heroes with something to memorialize the victory.

What about

"Maybe if we dangled a small piece of jewelry in front of the players they'd win the game."
Seriously? You think the problem is that the players don't try hard enough because they don't get a necklace pendant if they win?
November 28th, 2019 at 11:54 AM ^
I doubt one single thing like gold pants but it’s just one thing of a collection of what I think adds to the rivalry in accordance to their side. Plus they’re kids so who knows what motivates you. Would be cool to show their grandkids one day probably.
November 28th, 2019 at 3:45 PM ^
I can see the touching story now as Terelle Pryor sits down with his grandson and tells him about how he beat Michigan and got the gold pants.....which he sold for $3k to get a sweet wolf tattoo.

So just give them Tats

Sure. It’s not like it’s something they university would ever have to give out

Upper Peninsula chains made of Iron Ore to remind Ohio they can get a territorial ass kicking anytime they want.

Agreed, but change that to copper:

Yes. $100,000 in cash.

So now I'm curious, what is the NCAA rule that allows for it? Does every student at OSU get one? Is there a maximum value?
November 28th, 2019 at 12:12 PM ^
I've wondered about that too. If they're actually gold, with it at 1.5k per ounce, they would have some value. Maybe it's the sort of thing that got grandfathered in because they've been doing it forever?
November 28th, 2019 at 1:00 PM ^
I thought I read somewhere that they used to be gold, now just gold plated because of NCAA rules.
November 28th, 2019 at 12:16 PM ^
Lmao, as if NCAA rules applied to OSU...
November 28th, 2019 at 12:45 PM ^
Is it any different than rules which allow for championship rings (granted, which are not of the NBA or NFL variety) or swag bags from bowl games?
Some of the bowl game gift bags especially can get pretty pricey.

Golden coolers?
November 28th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
Yes, a sugar skull trinket with the score on it so when we win they could eventually, hopefully have a collection of skulls at the end of their college careers.
November 28th, 2019 at 12:08 PM ^
No. Maybe we can just win the game for once.
November 28th, 2019 at 12:20 PM ^
This is the only gold they need. Everyone should get a copy of this bad boy when they sign.

Cars.
November 28th, 2019 at 12:37 PM ^
We used to get a Big Ten Championship ring for beating Ohio State. That should be good enough.
November 28th, 2019 at 12:43 PM ^
Yes, solid gold Ms or $1 pins that fans will buy for $1,000 after the player graduates.

OP, you are aware that it was Michigan who gave Ohio the “script Ohio” march as a commemoration of the rivalry right?
November 28th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
November 28th, 2019 at 1:17 PM ^
Also, I reject the unsupported premise that this means more to them.
November 28th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
I don’t, can you really say Michigan is all in the way they are?
November 28th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
I think it would have to just kind of happen. Trying to create tradition never really works.
November 28th, 2019 at 1:52 PM ^
Totally agree, the only manufactured tradition I like is the wave to the children’s hospital at Iowa. That’s just beautiful.

I think this is a really cool idea. If the story is true, UM was absolutely dominating OSU pre-WW2. In an effort to remove the mystique of UM, the coach gave golden pants to players who beat UM to signal UM players put their pants on one leg at a time just like anyone else.
The pants were not THE thing that won games against UM; however, they symbolize yet another way OSU respects and approaches this rivalry. They personalize it; they memorialize it.
Frankly, outside of UM’s nauseatingly paternalistic attitude towards the game, it’d be cool to do something memorable to celebrate our victories over OSU. Who knows, maybe it would provide an incremental bit of mental strength going into the game and help us win one every once in a while.
I like the idea!
November 28th, 2019 at 1:23 PM ^
Ohio State has no respect for anything except winning at all costs.
November 28th, 2019 at 2:22 PM ^
This take is so lazy.
By all means, OSU is filled with a bunch of immoral and unethical individuals at leadership who have made unlawful decisions. Many of these decisions- in my mind - are a level above the regular bullshit that seems to plague college athletics (or - at least - men’s football and men’s basketball). Over and above any recency bias, I’ve always maintained UM has had some degree of moral high ground over those guys (harkening back to my paternalistic comment earlier).
Nevertheless, they have built a machine around beating UM...and they’ve been very successful. They’ve been the dominant and most consistent program in the B1G for 50+ years, and it’s heavily centered around one annual objective: Beat Michigan.
I think there are both strategic and operational lessons that UM can learn from OSU in order to both be more competitive in the rivalry as well as the national stage...gold pants (or whatever) is a small but actionable step of many that would be required to build that institutional infrastructure. Moreover, it lines up nicely with their original motivation for starting the tradition to begin with: Stop glorifying the talent on the other team and just go out and beat the shit out of them.
November 28th, 2019 at 3:56 PM ^
If UM REALLY wants to learn from OSU, then they can learn how OSU has not been appropriately punished for their cheating and law breaking, and then sink to their level and replicate that behavior.
