Inside Schembechler Hall Tidbits (O'Korn for MSU, Purdue locker room, etc)

Submitted by reshp1 on

I was listening to Sam Webb and JT Rogan's weekly podcast "Inside Schembechler Hall" at lunch and noticed a couple interesting tidbits:

JT Rogan seemed to spill the beans about who's starting for MSU, stating that they're taking advantage of the bye week to get the O'Korn transitioned from a back-up role to the starter, and coming up with a game plan for him. Not sure if there's an "in case Speight can't go" caveat that was unsaid, or if this was decided. Seemed like the latter from the way JT was talking about it.

They also discussed the visitor locker room conditions issue that flared up this week after Jim's Monday presser. When discussing Purdue's response, JT intimated that there were some additional issues with the conditions the team dealt with at Purdue that they kept private, and that any claims Purdue were making that they did as much as they could to be welcoming and accomodating were disingenuious at best.

it in camp is such that I didn't know/feel like it was a done deal.

Even now, part of me nervously wonders if they are different enough QB's that there would be value in Rogan letting it out there that JOK is starting, when the plan is for Speight to be healed and ready.

But, on the whole, this sounds legit, and it does make me OH SO HAPPY that it sounds like there has been a decision that JOK is now QB1.

In the words of Jim's daughter, "GREAT GAME, JOHN O'KORN!"

May it be followed by many, many more.

When Harbaugh was interviewed about a potential QB controvery/competition, he responded by saying there isn't one until Speight is healthy. I'm reading between the lines to think Speight's injury is more serious and will keep him out for awhile, therefore JOK is the starter.

Honestly, I think that regardless of the genuine severity of the injury, they're going to exaggerate it, if need be, in order to allow Speight to save some face with regard to losing his starting role this year. Either way, it serves as a convenient explanation and lets Speight keep his dignity.

It's better to be the guy who lost his starting job due to continued injury than it is to be the guy who's healthy enough to play but got passed on the depth chart.

Wait, why do you think this? Has Harbaugh been known to exaggerate the impact of injuries before? Is he the sort to soft-shoe a guy losing through competition?

Harbaugh isn't forthcoming from the media, but that's different from deceptively overstating injuries to save face for a player. I haven't seen anything from Harbaugh or his associates to suggest that he would ever do that. If Speight loses the job, he loses the job. Harbaugh likes his QBs and doesn't relish them losing their jobs, but he's not the sort to play pretend, either.

Harbaugh might not be known to do this, but that's not to say it hasn't been done before.  Famously, and until recently, I always thought Matt Gutierrez lost his spot to Chad Henne because of the torn labrum but I've recently heard that the extent of the injury was also exaggerated as the season went on to save face for freshman Henne having locked down the spot.

"JT intimated that there were some additional issues with the conditions the team dealt with at Purdue that they kept private"

The mind reels at what that might be.

Thanks for posting this!

My guess would be the toilets.  With only 2 stalls for 70 plus players, they were probably lined up waiting to take their pre game dump.

I remember in HS with my basketball team and all 14 of us waiting in line for a pre game poop.  I cannot imagine that scenerio playing out with 5 times as many players and the same amount of toilets.
