Illinois Quarterback Situation
Mates,
I think most of us wish Brandon Peters the best at Illinois but he left the game on Saturday in Minneapolis and there is a pretty fair chance that the #2 QB, Matt Robinson, might start this Saturday. I watched a lot of the Illini game against Minnesota and Illinois is not good at the football - but it wasn't on account of Robinson. By way of some history, Matt is the nephew of Greg Robinson (YTGR), and has pretty exceptional football bloodlines - his father and 2 uncles played D-1 football and Matt's older brother, Nick, was originally at UGA but is now the starting QB at Penn.
Matt's high school was Junipero Serra in Socal, playing in one of the toughest leagues in the country. JS ran a very wide open offense like Illinois is trying to do. Matt can run and he can pass - as I've said before, he is a gunslinger. He is a RS freshman and against Minnesota he was getting flushed out of the pocket pretty regularly and yet he was frequently throwing dimes. I also watched the Illinois receivers drop more balls than I have ever seen in a college game. They have a transfer WR from USC, #5, Trevon Sidney who was showing some excellent hands but he might be sidelined, too, so the outlook isn't great for improvement on that front for Illinois.
We are favored by 3 TD's right now and I don't expect an upset. That said, If Robinson plays you might see some of what we wish Patterson would do, albeit with far fewer weapons. They share similar physical builds and skills. Matt is a great kid but he would be facing a tough test with our defense seeming to be making big strides. Even if Peters does start, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Robinson in the game.

So...you're saying GERG might be there? It's reunion time!
October 8th, 2019 at 2:45 PM ^
I think the first time I saw GERG in Champaign (2009) was sufficient.
October 8th, 2019 at 2:57 PM ^
he walked into a bare cupboard - only 28 scholarship players on D because RR had used them on offense. and RR mandated he run a 3-3-5 which he'd never run before. greg has 2 super bowl rings and turned the texas defense around in the span of a few weeks at his first post-michigan job. nobody on this board has his chops or anything remotely close to it.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:06 PM ^
Yeah but it's easier and more fun to mock him so why are you ruining it for us?
People forget that RichRod forced him to run a defense he had never implemented before in his life - largely because it worked against him in the WV-Pitt game in 2007.
Hiring a defensive coordinator with years of experience and then telling him to run a defense he's unfamiliar with is like booking AC/DC for a concert and then mandating they play nothing but violin concertos.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:09 PM ^
Or perhaps like booking Snoop at a Midnight Madness event and telling him no stripper poles?
October 8th, 2019 at 4:40 PM ^
well played!
October 8th, 2019 at 5:46 PM ^
Nice run of posts. For sure.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:15 PM ^
I bet AC/DC would figure out to rock violin concertos.

Xtra,
I respect your opinions and input to this board and agree that Greg has a great resume and history of success...
But I also saw that man rubbing a stuffed beaver(?) in our defensive players faces on the sidelines, on national television (and later being effectively emasculated by RR on the sidelines of another ugly game). In retrospect he might not have been the best hire.
October 8th, 2019 at 4:32 PM ^
This cannot be overlooked.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
Will the stuffed beaver be back?
I just realized now . . . GERG's beaver started the whole trend that led to Turnover Chains and such.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:39 PM ^
I love stuffing beavers.
October 8th, 2019 at 4:30 PM ^
GERG will bring a plush toy for his nephew.
October 8th, 2019 at 2:48 PM ^
So you're saying we might have to score more than 21 points to win??
I'm not sure we can do that...
October 8th, 2019 at 5:38 PM ^
Go re-watch the Rutgers game.
October 8th, 2019 at 5:58 PM ^
We scored 52 on Rutgers... the Illinois defense is every bit as bad as Rutgers.
October 8th, 2019 at 2:49 PM ^
I am actually a little worried about this game... I don't think we will cover the spread. They do have a decent coaching staff. My guess is an unimpressive 2 score win that infuriates the fan base. We just haven't been a great road team for some reason.
October 8th, 2019 at 2:54 PM ^
Yeah, you said that yesterday, too. Go suck on your BPONE somewhere else.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
ha ha, what a douche!
I also thought we'd beat Iowa when most didn't. I am not the one in here complaining all week about beating Iowa nor will I complain when we beat a Smith coached team by 10.
Just saying it isn't a cake walk like Rutgers
October 8th, 2019 at 2:54 PM ^
i have watched a lot of illinois football this year. as pessimistic as i can be, i think we probably cover the spread and then some. they just aren't good at the football.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:06 PM ^
Illinois lost at home to EMU (!) and that was with Peters playing.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:11 PM ^
Okay, I hope I am wrong
We will win and it won't mean much either way.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:11 PM ^
Okay, I hope I am wrong
We will win and it won't mean much either way.
October 8th, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
But EMU beat Purdue last year and Purdue demolished Ohio State and OSU...
October 8th, 2019 at 6:08 PM ^
OMG! Does that mean if we lose to Illinois, EMU is the best team in Washtenaw County?
October 8th, 2019 at 3:14 PM ^
Illinois has a decent coaching staff? Have you been watching Illini in the past 4 years? Lovie Smith has mailed it in and his coaching has been awful
October 8th, 2019 at 3:55 PM ^
OK, I am in the minority here. Apparently I don't realize how bad Illinois is. I hope we win by 70 and both QBs get 4 TD's. We haven't performed well on the road though. Hope you guys are right because we need to work somethings out before PSU.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:59 PM ^
This will look like the Rutgers game.
October 8th, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
this is the most accurate take. illinois is not good.
October 8th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
We'll win by 40.
October 8th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
Stop right there.... this will be 40+ for Michigan and maybe 17 for Illinois.. Might be a little rusty early, but Michigan will roll. I think Michigan finally has chip on shoulder. Still a long ways to go to beat even PSU, but Illinois will not be issue;...
October 8th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
Rutgers has a better defense in SP+ than Illinois by 12 spots right now.
I'm confident we will cover in this one.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:02 PM ^
And we'll all say that the offense is building on the success they had with some plays. Only to not run them again the following week...
Gah! WTF??? BPONE, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!!!!!
October 8th, 2019 at 3:13 PM ^
how long before someone invents a term that means the opposite of BPONE? I feel like it's time to have that.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:16 PM ^
The Blue Paradise Of Nice Expectations, oh god it's the same thing, there's no way out
October 8th, 2019 at 3:19 PM ^
we're about to hit our stride on offense.....
a guy who knows more about football than i said so.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:22 PM ^
so the opposite of BPONE is WATHOSOO
nice work!
October 8th, 2019 at 3:55 PM ^
I think he was an indian chief, wasn't he?
October 8th, 2019 at 4:49 PM ^
Actually, it's ENOPB.
October 8th, 2019 at 2:55 PM ^
34-3 Michigan wins. Illinois may move the ball between the 30s a bit but similar to the game last week in that they can’t put points on the board.
October 8th, 2019 at 2:58 PM ^
Fun fact: Michigan hasn't played in Champaign since 2011.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:09 PM ^
Was that the crazy 65-62 or whatever game?
October 8th, 2019 at 3:20 PM ^
No. That one was home. I'm sure 2011 was some generic blowout win.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
Not just any blowout, Fitz Toussaint career high rushing yard game!
October 8th, 2019 at 5:04 PM ^
Toussaint had a 65 yard run on the second play of the game. We went up 7-0 a couple plays later and only people who lived in the metro Detroit area saw the drive. The rest of the country was stuck watching a game that went over.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:04 PM ^
and this just came in, some more background on matt possibly starting this week:
https://www.si.com/college/illinois/football/illinois-qb-matt-robinson-michigan-2019
Following Tuesday morning’s practice session, Robinson said he obviously hopes to get an opportunity to play against a nationally-ranked defense such as No. 16 Michigan (4-1, 1-1 in Big Ten). If Robinson does get that chance, Illinois offensive coordinator Rod Smith said Monday his game plan is likely to use more big personnel and designed runs with the quarterback to utilize the athletic ability of the 6-foot-1, 190-pound signal-caller. Illinois (2-3, 0-2 in Big Ten) is desperate to find a running attack against a Michigan defense that is one of the best in the nation at stopping the pass (No. 7 among 130 Football Bowl Subdivision schools).
“You wouldn’t know it by looking at him but Matt is sneaky quick and fast for a quarterback,” Illinois tailback Reggie Corbin said. “I think he does give us that (added running element at quarterback).”
it talks about a 'new motivation' with all the playing time he is now getting, and the chance that he might start this weekend. either way, great kid and i hope he gets that chance.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:12 PM ^
Oh no. Now I'm legitimately concerned for the kid.
"Run to the edge vs Khaleke Hudson" is not going to end well for him.
"Run between the tackles and try to dodge Cam McGrone" is not going to end well.
I personally liked Rutgers' strategy of "throw the ball before the QB gets broken in half." Illinois might be able to actually execute that kind of offense.
But please don't send a new QB toward our linebackers. This isn't 2007 Dennis Dixon - the kid will die...
October 8th, 2019 at 5:08 PM ^
and when you know the could-be-broken player personally, that concern is a reality.
October 8th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
Interesting news, thanks. Hopefully we'll eventually see quarterback play like the above described.
