Illinois Quarterback Situation

Mates,

I think most of us wish Brandon Peters the best at Illinois but he left the game on Saturday in Minneapolis and there is a pretty fair chance that the #2 QB, Matt Robinson, might start this Saturday.   I watched a lot of the Illini game against Minnesota and Illinois is not good at the football - but it wasn't on account of Robinson.  By way of some history, Matt is the nephew of Greg Robinson (YTGR), and has pretty exceptional football bloodlines - his father and 2 uncles played D-1 football and Matt's older brother, Nick, was originally at UGA but is now the starting QB at Penn.

Matt's high school was Junipero Serra in Socal, playing in one of the toughest leagues in the country.  JS  ran a very wide open offense like Illinois is trying to do. Matt can run and he can pass - as I've said before, he is a gunslinger.  He is a RS freshman and against Minnesota he was getting flushed out of the pocket pretty regularly and yet he was frequently throwing dimes. I also watched the Illinois receivers drop more balls than I have ever seen in a college game.  They have a transfer WR from USC, #5, Trevon Sidney who was showing some excellent hands but he might be sidelined, too, so the outlook isn't great for improvement on that front for Illinois.

We are favored by 3 TD's right now and I don't expect an upset.  That said, If Robinson plays you might see some of what we wish Patterson would do, albeit with far fewer weapons.  They share similar physical builds and skills.  Matt is a great kid but he would be facing a tough test with our defense seeming to be making big strides.   Even if Peters does start, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Robinson in the game.

he walked into a bare cupboard - only 28 scholarship players on D because RR had used them on offense.  and RR mandated he run a 3-3-5 which he'd never run before. greg has 2 super bowl rings and turned the texas defense around in the span of a few weeks at his first post-michigan job.  nobody on this board has his chops or anything remotely close to it.

Yeah but it's easier and more fun to mock him so why are you ruining it for us?

People forget that RichRod forced him to run a defense he had never implemented before in his life - largely because it worked against him in the WV-Pitt game in 2007.

Hiring a defensive coordinator with years of experience and then telling him to run a defense he's unfamiliar with is like booking AC/DC for a concert and then mandating they play nothing but violin concertos.

Xtra,

I respect your opinions and input to this board and agree that Greg has a great resume and history of success...

But I also saw that man rubbing a stuffed beaver(?) in our defensive players faces on the sidelines, on national television (and later being effectively emasculated by RR on the sidelines of another ugly game).  In retrospect he might not have been the best hire.

I am actually a little worried about this game... I don't think we will cover the spread.  They do have a decent coaching staff.  My guess is an unimpressive 2 score win that infuriates the fan base.  We just haven't been a great road team for some reason.

34-3 Michigan wins. Illinois may move the ball between the 30s a bit but similar to the game last week in that they can’t put points on the board.

and this just came in, some more background on matt possibly starting this week:

https://www.si.com/college/illinois/football/illinois-qb-matt-robinson-michigan-2019

Following Tuesday morning’s practice session, Robinson said he obviously hopes to get an opportunity to play against a nationally-ranked defense such as No. 16 Michigan (4-1, 1-1 in Big Ten). If Robinson does get that chance, Illinois offensive coordinator Rod Smith said Monday his game plan is likely to use more big personnel and designed runs with the quarterback to utilize the athletic ability of the 6-foot-1, 190-pound signal-caller. Illinois (2-3, 0-2 in Big Ten) is desperate to find a running attack against a Michigan defense that is one of the best in the nation at stopping the pass (No. 7 among 130 Football Bowl Subdivision schools).

“You wouldn’t know it by looking at him but Matt is sneaky quick and fast for a quarterback,” Illinois tailback Reggie Corbin said. “I think he does give us that (added running element at quarterback).”

it talks about a 'new motivation' with all the playing time he is now getting, and the chance that he might start this weekend.  either way, great kid and i hope he gets that chance.

Oh no. Now I'm legitimately concerned for the kid.

"Run to the edge vs Khaleke Hudson" is not going to end well for him.

"Run between the tackles and try to dodge Cam McGrone" is not going to end well.

I personally liked Rutgers' strategy of "throw the ball before the QB gets broken in half." Illinois might be able to actually execute that kind of offense.

But please don't send a new QB toward our linebackers. This isn't 2007 Dennis Dixon - the kid will die...

Interesting news, thanks. Hopefully we'll eventually see quarterback play like the above described.
