If you don't attend the game

Submitted by ldevon1 on

What is your preference to watch it? Alone, or with a few people, or at the bar with a large crowd? I prefer to watch alone with a few craft beers and a nice bourbon. I don't mind if my girl is there, but it's not a requirement.  I don't mind a party for bowl games, but for a regular game, I would rather watch alone.

I would prefer to watch the game alone, especially since I don't have many diehard Michigan fans around me. Like others have mentioned, I like to really focus on the game and not be interrupted while watching. However, I have watched games with fans as passionate as myself and it is a great time. Provided that we win, of course.

Usually alone or with 1-2 friends. I intensely dislike bars, as I have some hearing loss (hey, you try spending your 20s in a series of loud rock bands...) and my signal to noise ratio is awful. Can't hear the announcers, and usually have to rewatch the game when I get home. I wouldn't mind seeing how a few mgobloggers would do watching games together...

It depends on the game and how the team is doing. If the team is doing well, you need to arrive fairly early for the big games. I've been there an hour before hand.

As the above poster mentioned, the backroom is its own environment, but that's where I go. It gets crowded and it is VERY energized. If you prefer to chill with friends, you can arrive much later and stay in the main area.

With family or solo. I'm sure this will be said a million times, but the comfort of watching at home where I can walk to the bathroom or grab a soda at any time is much more enjoyable for me.

I like going to a game here and there, but the seating at the BH is wildly uncomfortable, I always end up sitting next to drunk fans, and waiting in traffic for an hour plus does not appeal to me as I have a moderate commute daily.

Plus, the home games this year, other than a couple, are horrible.

I'm fine in the stadium.  But I HATE watching on TV.   As a result, I go to as many road games as I can.  Right now only going to MSU on the road ... that may change !

At home, I'm in the basement and the wife watches upstairs (we can't watch together).  So yeah ... I'm just like thousands of other devoted Michigan football fans !!!

I always go to at least one game a year. If I could afford season tickets then I would be at every game. I think it depends on the game if I watch it with people or not. If they are playing a weaker team I don't make plans and most of the time watch the game alone. Bigger games I do like to get together with family and friends. If I go to the game or watch with people I will always replay the game (usually the next morning before NFL starts).

my dad used to have season tickets for 30 plus years and i was able to go to a lot of games, then i worked at the stadium in the suites for 4 seasons... during those 4 seasons i was always able to catch a good portion of every home game (thank god for the live feed from the field) but stilll DVR'd the game and would re-watch the whole game the next morning before the wife and kids got up... now that i don't work at the stadium anymore i sit at home on saturdays and watch every game, and try to pay as close attention as i can which is hard when you have 3 kids that are 3 years old and under but i still DVR the games so that i can re-watch if i miss big chunks because kids are having melt downs or doing something that they should be doing...

I watch from home, mostly. If it's a big game, I almost always watch from home. Too annoying to be in public while I have strong football emotions.

Either with my family or by myself.  I don't have any other UM fans out here that I know so unless I'm back home in MI, it's by myself in my basement.  Will usually have a couple games on and a handful of beers at the ready.  If I'm in MI, I'm probably going to the game unless they're away.  I don't get out there often so when I do, I want to make every attempt.

Alone, but I'm not opposed to watching a blowout with UM fans.  Strangely enough I have two (2) Michigan fans in different houses who live on my street in NC. We had a garage viewing of the OSU game last year, so that won't happen again. Besides, I'm intolerable in rivalry games.

Alone. That way I can scream at the TV after a play goes to shit, fire large objects across the room and down a hallway, and run though the house with glee after a big play. All without endangering or scaring the neighborhood.

Either alone or with a small group of like minded fans.  Then go out to watch the remaining games at a bar.

1080 HD projector on a screen that's appx 7' x 11'.  2 Klipsch La Scala's for sound.  Have it up in the loft of an old barn where the space is about 24' x 24' with 18' ceilings.  Usually have 20-30 rowdy friends watching with me every Saturday.  We play the finest heavy metal tunes during commercials and halftime and blast the fight song every time we score.  It's pretty magical!

Generally I watch alone, particularly for big games, because I can get wound up and loud.  I've seen people worse than me... but I'm bad enough.  I'd rather not have to deal with the judgment of others when I'm watching my beloved Wolverines.

I watch at home with some close friends or go with them to watch at bar. I actually watched the Penn State game at an MSU bar in NY last year because I had rolled up there by mistake. Still a crazy good time.

But not with my older sons.  They are increadibly bad luck and singlehandidly fucked up both the 2009 Iowa game, the 2014 OSU game and the 2015 MSU game.

I had them over to watch and they were moving around and talking at the wrong time and one of them even screwed around with the surround sound which totally changed the ending of the OSU game.  They are NOT welcome unless it's a MAC game or something and even then I'm not 100% sure it's safe.

But my wife is very good luck.  As long as she sits in the right seat.

I've been living in Alabama the past 12 years, but am currently in the process of moving back to Michigan. I'm pretty sure I'll now be watching around a few close friends who bleed blue.

Alone with a 24 pack. (Hoke years) Now I'm down to about a 12 pack in these happier times. I tend to yell and scream and throw things on occasion. Wife says I'm not a good role model for my girls. I argue I am since I'm showing true passion for something.

Living in Ohio going to bars is right out. Maybe when were competitive again but lately it's just brutal and I'm getting too old for that shit.
I've also no friends who are Michigan fans because of the whole Ohio thing so a party or get together never happens either. I won't go to Ohio state Michigan parties and be the one Michigan guy who everyone jumps on. No thanks.

My wife and I make up a bunch of food and all the neighborhood teenage boys hang out and watch all day with my sons. They are hilarious to watch games with because they all clown eachother and make fun of the teams getting beat. good times.

I prefer to be watching period. I unfortunately can't always watched games. perks of living in virginia without owning a TV. but when I have watched I don't mind any setting. I've watched with buckeyes. I've watched in a garage in Ohio with a bunch of M fans. i watched the sugar bowl a few years ago in a bdubs in central virginia, which was fun. I've watched in a library by myself. I've watched at a friend's house with people who don't care either direction. between all of that, I don't know that I have a preference. maybe mine would actually be the one time a year I get to watch with my family up north, which is usually over thanksgiving for The Game.

In a perfect world, just my husband and I at home while the kids are napping.  While we process losses differently (he doesn't want to talk about it and I do) we generally enjoy the game the same way.  Unfortunately we often end up at my parents house because they have the full cable package while we only have Sling TV.  And of course we want to raise our kids to be knowledgeable fans so they are usually watching with us.  The other downside to being at my parents is that my dad is the type who yells after every play, either at a player, play call, or ref.  Having grown up with it I'm used to it, but my poor husband, bless his heart, puts up with it like a trooper.  The dentist thinks he grinds his teeth at night, but I'm pretty sure it only happens during games at my parent's house.

I try to be a loner when it comes to watching games that I don't attend. I don't mind watching with my girlfriend because she understands when its okay to talk and when its time to be dead silent, but when it comes to watching with other friends/fans I try not to. Something about having to carry on conversations while I'm trying to watch the game just ruins the experience for me. That and I get a little too invested sometimes....

SchembechlerDisciple

...would be my preference by far. Usually end up at home with the mgowife and mgokids though. I try to keep a strict "no talking policy", but the glorious silence (besides the broadcast) rarely lasts for more than a minute or two.

I hate watching games with friends, especially since most of them in Oklahoma don't care for Michigan. My wife sometimes watches and she's a great sport about it. She loves Jake Butt and likes to say he has a tight end.

I usually can't handle watching a game with a casual fan.  Especially one that thinks he/she knows EVERYTHING, but knows little.

If I watch with someone, it's usually my brother on his 107" projector screen.  I guess it depends on the game, too.  I watched the UNLV game on BTN2go on my phone at my kids' soccer game, last year.  "No, I'm not that excited about a 5-year old scoring a goal, but I am when Ty Isaac streaks down the sideline 70 some yards for a TD."

Soulfire21

August 4th, 2016 at 10:53 AM ^

I would prefer to watch it with a small group (max of 6 I would say) buddies who are equally interested in the game, don't talk much during, etc. Not really keen on being around casual fans or a large party atmosphere.

Exception is the away OSU games. Parents usually throw a party for it but me and my dad and uncles, etc. are all serious M fans so we sit in one room in (mostly) silence intently watching the game and everyone else is in another part of the house.

The bar always sounds like a good idea to me, but it's loud, service is slow, sharing the bathroom with others, and if things aren't going well I tend to get a bit sulky.

With my wife who is at least as big a Michigan football fan as I am and my daughter who was born in time to catch the tale end of last season, but should have more fun watching this season.  Generally my pets fear the living room when football is on and will not come within 50 feet of it except for one of the cats who I think is going a bit deaf.

Last fall I tried a new strategy that I ended up loving:  on DVR!  Never thought I would like it, but take a noon game for example, I could start watching at 1:30 and catch up to the live action around the start of the 4th quarter.

Pros:

- An extra hour and half of my life spent with my 2-year old

- No nervous energy during commercials or half-time, just fast-forward right to the next play

- Fast-forward through any general pre-game nonsense (always watch the run out on to the field of course

- Still watch the game live by the 4th quarter

- Makes me avoid any irrational in-game message boards / twitter

I did always have to check at the start of the game to triple-check that it was recording, that I had enough space, and that I extended the end time by several hours. Not for everyone and honestly wouldn't probably have done it if not for my 2-year old, but give it a try.   Usually my wife would leave after my child's nap, so typically alone.
