Hype Video - Year 5

Submitted by FanNamedOzzy on August 27th, 2019 at 4:17 PM

Hey guys, been a bit since I've posted, but here's a video I spent quite a bit of time making in the past month or so.

A couple of warnings:

  1. There's a Don Brown F-bomb, so be wary of that.
  2. Yes, it starts with some sadness. Apologies for that, I'm hoping for next years video that won't be the narrative of the offseason.

As always, constructive criticism always welcome! I'll be posting a lot in the upcoming weeks with my video analysis, as I did throughout the season last year! Good to be back!

Enjoy!

Every team (except Clemson or Bama) lose games.  It's not a requirement to rehash them every year before the hype can begin.  I think this style is ok when transitioning coaches for example (Rich Rod vs. Hoke optimism), but by year 5 after some really solid seasons under Harbaugh, its just gratuatous self inflicted dong punching).

I completely understand that every team loses games. I didn't include any soundbites about the ND loss or the bowl game loss. Why? Because they're losses that don't matter, in my eyes.

What matters is beating OSU at the end of the season to get to a Big Ten championship, to then get to the College Football Playoffs. If Michigan HAD done that last year, it's a huge breakthrough, likely Big Ten title, and then people are happy even if they lose to a Clemson / Bama in the playoff.

Instead, all anyone talks about in the offseason is "they're good, but can they beat OSU". That is the hurdle, that is the story, that is the caveat. And it's fair for that to be the driving story.

Entering the season without highlighting that is leaving out a critical detail that has prevented this team from being in the elite tier.

So, I understand your frustration with it, but for each of my preseason hype videos, I try to capture the offseason / mood going into the season. That includes OSU, Gattis, new offense, favorites to win the Big Ten. That's 2019, to me.

There’s maybe .05% of the fan base that expects us to play as well as bama or Clemson. Simply losing a couple games is not the reason for the frustration. It’s 100% based on the fact that Harbaugh hasn’t beaten osu and hasn’t gotten us to Indy.

as a fan all I want right now is to beat osu and win a big ten championship. If we beat osu but lose the championship game to wiscy, I’d be cool with that and would acknowledge that this program took a big step in the right direction. I’m NOT expecting a national championship and I presume that most fans would agree.

This has been part of the problem though. OSU has been nearly as good as Bama and Clemson under Urban. So beating them requires us to play like Bama and Clemson. OSU doesn't have off games against us.

Hey the Sometimes When You’re On hype video started with sadness too and that’s my favorite of all time!

Really enjoyed this, well done!  A sit happens I’m going to the gym right now and this has got me amped

Liked it a lot. Many times I don't care for hype videos, but this was pretty good. The music wasn't cheesy, the footage was good. But most importantly, Michigan (and the video) embraced the reality of needing to beat OSU, and failing to do it the last 4 years. That's the flat out truth. I am all in with Michigan and Harbaugh, and don't believe in a "hot seat." But man, they have got to find a way to beat the Buckeyes. If Michigan beats TOSU, MSU, and ND, and somehow fumbles virtually any other two games, I won't care . . . the season will be successful. But the one game, the game that marks all others, is OSU. Gotta beat them. (Irrelevant aside: has anyone out there rewritten the "one ring" words to reflect the battle between Michigan and the hordes of Sauron, between the Wolverines and the orcs in the land of Mordor, south in the realm of Ohio?)

If anyone can knock that...

it'll be Maizen.

But in all seriousness, that was one of, if not THE (eat it OSU) best, hype videos ever produced. Really well done!

Great stuff Comrade! One suggestion: with all of these hype videos, it's tempting to cram as many highlights as possible. But that means each clip is a fraction of a second. I'd rather have fewer highlights and longer clips -- my eyes won't hurt that way, and I can enjoy the highlight better.

Fair enough! With how fast the music was, I try to match as closely as I can to the pace of the song. The section with the game audio is where I tried to let the footage "breath" a bit as the music opened up a bit. So while the clips may have been quick cuts, I tried to make them flow within a play a bit smoother than the rest of the video.

It's a great suggestion, though, and I'll keep that in mind for future ones. Sometimes I do cut an editing session short in order to come back with fresh eyes the next day to spot those "jarring" cuts that people would find uncomfortable or dizzying.
