Hunter Dickinson to Kansas
If we paid for Bakich and Hunter what would be the downside? Would we be broke? Would the $100 surplus be marked safe? Ill never be on the side of "save the money" who are we saving it for? We arent Michigan State and we have the funds to have the best in all of our (at the minimum) televised sports. I am just dumb founded every time I hear a fan say "yeah its best we just pass on this top end coach/player". Unless Warde has several burner accounts on MGOBLOG I just dont get it.
The NIL pot isn't the same thing as the department budget. Neither of us have visibility into that. Maybe there'd be no downside to paying Hunter and Bakich. Maybe paying them would have exhausted funds we then wouldn't be able to spend on keeping Blake Corum. We're not MSU, but we're also not the US Mint.
Those who stay...
Can we at least now pretend not to be embarrassed by Hunter's poor sportsmanship and constant trash talking?
Yeah. I always found him incredibly annoying. He was so good sometimes, but in the most annoying way possible bc he was never quite as physical as he probably could be and seemed to lack effort and intensity for long stretches. His trash talk always sounded like he was offended and arrogant. The talk didn't always match the play. I prefer the trash talk that's more playful, confident and upbeat (like our football team), not the MSU "I'm offended" chip on the shoulder trash talk. His energy was kind of a downer in my opinion.
Good for Hunter. I tend to root against Kansas when I catch a Big 12 game once every five years from a David-and-Goliath perspective, but I also tend to adopt them as a white knight against MSU, Duke, Kentucky, etc. Might need his powers against Izzo next year.
I don't get the vitriol at his announcement. He took his time evaluating his options and made an announcement when he was ready. Not like he was releasing teasers about maybe, eventually, some day revealing a top 16 or whatever.
He is going to a school that prioritizes basketball. It means boosters there will prioritize paying him and he will make more money, it means he is a bigger deal on campus, it means the atmospheres for games are more fun. It makes sense. Sucks for the basketball team but I’m glad I won’t have to deal with his personality off the court.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Wish him the best, but man, he needs to spend some more time in the weight room.
Get that money big fella. I'm excited to see what Juwan can do with Reed.
He hasn't been a Michigan player for a while so I don't really care how he does. If he failed that would be fine. If he succeeds that would be fine. The talk about him and his little decision day has been annoying because it's incredibly uninteresting. Really only want to hear about Michigan players.
How can Michigan not match NIL for an already established current player. Do they not want him or don't support basketball close the level of football?
We dont have an athletic program we have a football franchise and some nice varsity sports.
As I said in an earlier post, I wish him well and appreciate his contributions to a B10 title in 2021 and a S16 in 2022, best of luck at KU (unless we encounter them on the hardwood at some point this year)
Two things:
1). I fully expect them to be better than last year, even though they may have less individual talent in the aggregate. They were often an incoherent mess on offense and defense, and definitely paid a price for having to play a freshman point guard big minutes. They were also both unlucky and collectively lacked confidence in close games. A basketball team can get better in lots of ways, some of which don't have anything to do with who left and who arrived.
2). Just want to vent about one aspect of Crisler for a second. I had good, lower-bowl season tickets for several years, through Amaker and early John Beilein. I love Michigan basketball and I went to every game. At some point (maybe after Zack and Stu's junior year?), just as they were really turning into something special, the Athletic Department re-seated the entire arena and shut me out of lower-bowl tickets. Not enough priority points, despite also being a graduate and having football season tickets for years. I knew more than a few fans that got treated the same way - still fairly unhappy about it...
I am certain that your experience with respect to basketball seating is not at all unique. Michigan went hard on prioritizing fat cat donors once the program took off (2012) and shut out all of the little guys and students. The AD to give the appearance that they care deeply about basketball but the truth is nowhere near that. In lieu of creating a tough environment for opponents (more passionate fans and students in the lower bowl) they deeply prioritized the money that those donors give while sitting on their hands and/or skipping out on half of the season slate.
There are other issues like nearby pro sports, winter weather, and midweek 9:00 p.m. tips, but it could definitely be better if admin were willing to make some changes.
That was a Dave Brandon move.
I had good lower bowl seats and was moved to crappy lower bowl seats. My old seats are empty most games.
What a cringey annoying video. Bye already.
I enjoyed his time here, appreciate his efforts and wish him well. Can’t say I’ll root for Kansas ever, but I will root for him.
Sad he's gone.
But he wants a shot at a National Championship. Kansas is an excallent place to give that a shot.
He needed the money judging from how often he had his pockets picked on the court.
Joking aside, good luck, Hunter.
Lots of sour grapes in here, Good luck Hunter!
video writer must be on strike too, yikes
Hope Juwan can bring in some quality players. Can’t miss the tournament two years in a row.
Hahaha. At least he'll get to feel what being a 1 seed in the tourney is all about. Until they get bounced in round 2
Not sure if you were being sarcastic, but you do remember that Michigan was a one seed in the tournament two years ago, right? When HD was a freshman?
Wishing Hunter well - and, wondering how much he'll enjoy the BBQ at venues in Lawrence and KC.
I hate Kansas basketball...
After last year though, any change is a good change, even if it's regression because status quo with Juwan just isn't cutting it.
He put in his time here, and I'm grateful for that. Good luck, Hunter (unless Michigan happens to face Kansas, of course).
I know I’m supposed to be mature and take the high road, but fuck this. Hunter was supposed to be the alpha and leader of this team. And this just seems like superstars in the NBA forming super teams which I hate /hated. I get the whole money aspect and I guess in the end that’s probably what caused this situation. Hopefully Michigan learns from this and gets its shit together. No way Michigan should be losing players to schools like Kansas. I know they are considered a blue blood but still no excuse.
Sorry for the rant.
Kansas loves paying players, so I'm sure this is a big day, but also they'll be good and I think Michigan will not be. I think the heat he took and the fact that the roster was getting worse every year and next year's looks really bad, played a small part. I think it was 75% money with like 25% winning.
I agree with your rant. This entire situation has been embarrassing and will be pounded into future recruits heads from our comp.
We said no p4p we would focus on paying guys for past accolades...????
I don't want to hear about Juwan losing his job.
Ha, dude ended up going pro in the end anyways.
Pure Velveta
That makes the most sense, good luck to him there.
Don't see Juwan surviving another year.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU. Good luck Hunter
