Houston Suspends Voluntary Workouts
What is uncommon becomes relevant when you have a 105 person roster plus coaches, trainers, etc.
I'm not saying it isn't a concern for the team, I agree that they handled this poorly. It's just that "symptomatic" doesn't mean you're at death's door.
Ugh, “symptomatic” could mean “a mild sore throat like we have all had several times a year our whole lives.”
it certainly “could.” for some, it “won’t.” for some, it will mean “dead.” and the faster and looser teams play this, the more likely that is.

How could you not think of testing them when they returned? Amazing.
Get back up on that horse in two weeks, Cougs.
For Houston to be approaching or even contemplating a new stay-at-home order is just stunning given the medical capacity of that city. The Texas Medical Center alone is the largest concentration of hospitals in the world (just looked it up... it's 21 hospitals just in that one area).
Lived there for quite some time. Though the hospitals are mostly for teaching, research and specialty, the capacity is still insane.
I had to look up the numbers again. It's nuts:
The Texas Medical Center contains 54 medicine-related institutions:
21 hospitals
8 specialty institutions
8 academic and research institutions (including M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where I got my first research job)
4 medical schools
7 nursing schools
3 public health organizations,
2 pharmacy schools
1 dental school
It would seem to be a pre-emptive move. According to this, Texas had 2,008 COVID patients hospitalized yesterday. Michigan, at its peak, had 3,986 and now has 661. Per capita, Michigan (pop. 10 million) and Texas (29 million) currently have almost identical hospitalization rates.
Oh so they are operating their policy based on emotion and not the science. Got it.
The ship has sailed. We are all back in the rona-world now. Welcome back everybody, hope you enjoyed a couple of weeks without discussing curves, PPE, and lockdowns. The “cycle of crisis” encompassing different aspects of life is here through November at least. So it’s back to rona for now.
A college football team halting workouts because of players testing positive is kind of a relevant topic, man.
Yep. Just within the last 48 hours A LOT of people have dipped back into full-on panic mode.
There is no joy in life any more. There is only spending 100% of our time worrying and fretting about every uptick in CoronaVirus cases.
For the record, 0.035% of all Americans have died from CoronaVirus, and their median age is 75.
Meanwhile, given that the average American lives about 80 years and that this whole circus began in earnest in early March, the average American has now (1) had a significant array of their God-given freedoms taken away via government fiat, and (2) have been fed CoronaVirus fear for 0.31% (with this number continuing to grow) of their entire life.
Not bad. More hyperbole next time.
There is no hyperbole in my 3rd and 4th paragraphs.
How's this for no hyperbole. Bunch of states opened too early. Second wave on the way.
Are you suggesting that states that opened later aren't going to see a second wave?
Bingo. There is no such thing as opening "too early" because there will be an increase virus spread no matter when you open.
There is no 2nd wave. We're still ON THE FIRST WAVE aka we're going to prolong the first wave and we're not even close to being finished with the first wave
this is objectively wrong--on every single fact there is my man. But maybe wait two weeks!?!?!
Since you are so fucking good at math and rationalizing unfortunate circumstances for others, what percent of the population was molested by Sandusky??? Small I am sure.
BTW, FUCK ped state and all their delusional joepa loving fans and all the paternos and field goal franklin!!!
Please share the verses in the Bible which outline these freedoms God gave us which have been taken away.
I may not be able to do it from the Bible but I sure as hell could do it from the Constitution.
Anyway, I’m not sure it matters, apparently police aren’t going to be a thing anymore anyway so I’m not sure how lockdowns could be enforced anyway.
Jacobson v. Massachusetts, 197 U.S. 11 (1905). Give it a read.
Which freedoms are specifically God given?
Are you suggesting they should just carry on after 6 symptomatic cases? Even if it were a flu outbreak, any program would take the same response to suspend voluntary workouts. Let's not act like this is some major infringement on these players lives or the team's development. The part not motivated by science was not testing up front to control the situation better.
Yes. Quarantine the infected players and carry on with the rest.
I'm stating it flat out--they are every team in America should carry on after players test positive for CV. Exactly like they would if a player tested positive for flu. Because, and this is not an opinion--CV is LESS dangerous to players than the flu.
The evil strategy continues to be executed. Let them all get it in June and July so the team has herd immunity by fall camp.
Yep, I would have had them doing half naked twister daily until the tests came back. Suspend practice for a couple weeks, and good to go for the season.
Might be the first, and definitively won't be the last. This circus will seemingly give the Ringling Bros. a run in longevity. Grab a bowl of popcorn fellow CFB fans, we're going to need it.
Dana Holgerson looks like Christopher Lloyd’s character in the Dennis the Menace movie
Dana Holgerson looks like what you’d imagine a younger, slightly heavier Larry David would look like.
Very valid point you have.
I mean, this shouldn't surprise anyone. It's going to keep happening for months. Schools are going to need to either power through it and accept the costs or stop trying to bring people back. Houston only testing symptomatic students seems ludicrously short-sighted and lazy, but even with robust testing this is going to happen.
Seriously. This fantasy of reopening practices, acting as though nothing out of the norm for college athletics, is mind boggling to me. Need a vaccine. The doctors have said it over and over. Vaccine == Normalcy.
How's that SARS vaccine coming along?
How in the actual fuck can a university not test its student athletes (which they let come back to campus for workouts) when we are in the middle of what seems a never ending pandemic?! WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK.
This is why we won't have college football this year. A god damn University that probably has at least a few hundred doctors on campus cant even set guidelines and operating procedures for returning to campus.
"We will only test players who show signs of symptoms "
WHAT THE FUCK
The city of Houston just said it’s thisclose from reimposing a lockdown because, surprise, virus deaths are approaching the breaking point. Everything is dumber in Texas. https://apple.news/AuMbBj24gT0SsfXYgFA6frA
